After much fuss over the premature announcement of the Panasonic LX5 release last week, things have finally become official.
Panasonic unveiled the much awaited LX5, the successor to the loved LX3. One criticism about the LX5 is that it has no noteworthy upgrade to the LX3. Panasonic’s specs sheet may address that issue.
The LX5 has a revised sensor, a longer zoom and an altered design for improved control. The Panasonic LX5 offers a 24-90mm equivalent lens which is great for a compact camera and a more flexible zoom range. Maximum aperture is a satisfying F2.0-3.0.
As compared to the LX3 the LX5 has a bigger 10 megapixel sensor which is amazing for a compact camera.
As for the body design the changes are minimal; a better handgrip, clickable control dial.
A significant addition to the design body is the connector that adds an electronic viewfinder, similar to the micro four thirds Pansonic GF1.
Panasonic also introduced the latest image stabilization technology called ‘Power OIS’.
The price tag for the LX5 is a reasonable-for-its-performance US$500 and will be available this August.
The LX3 and LX5 are news worthy cameras as photo enthusiast have supported the line immensely. The LX line is a new category in the compact camera market and is dubbed as premium compact camera with good picture quality and manual modes that give creative freedom to the user.
