If you’re a regular reader here at camera.co.uk you know were fascinated with avant-garde fashion photographers like David Le Chapelle. Were not sure if fashion photographer Steven Meisel is truly avant-garde (yes were taking that term seriously) but he did create Madonna’s book SEX and some wonderful images from fashion bibles such as Vogue and W.
What we love about Steven Meisel is not that he pushes the boundaries of photography, instead he clearly defines the box with well cast faces and characters of fashion. Meisel’s talent lies in his crystal clear scripting of story lines that showcases fashion and culture.
Meisel’s relationship with Italian Vogue, of which he always gets to be the cover and lead editorial story reflects his importance in fashion photograph.
Fashion for Meisel has been a life long love affair; his childhood was filled not with toys but drawings of beautiful women. At the age of 12 Meisel tricked a modeling agency so he can shoot fashion icon Twiggy.
Meisel’s fascination with models led him to photography them. As these models booked gigs and showed to magazines Meisel became recognized. Seventeen magazine in particular called Meisel after seeing a model’s portfolio shot by the photographer.
Aside from countless magazine editorials and covers, Meisel also shot album covers of Madonna’s 1984 ‘Like A Virgin’ album and Mariah Carey’s 1995 ‘Daydream’.
Other Meisel campaigns include Prada, Versace, Valentino, Dolce and Gabbana, and Calvin Klein. Remember those controversial CK ads? Meisel was the photographer responsible of such imagery.
His love for beautiful women has led Meisel to lauch the careers of several supermodels by his photography; the list includes the supermodel greats Linda Evangelista, Naomi Campbell, Christy Turlington, Kristen McMenamy, Amber Valletta, Iris Strubegger, Lara Stone, Coco Rocha, Caroline Trentini, Liya Kebede, Karen Elson, to name a few.
