Nikon D3100 weighs 17.7 oz (502 g) with battery, card and 18-55mm VR kit lens.
A very exciting aspect of the Nikon D3100 DSLR camera is that it is light weight, the smallest amateur DSLR camera from Nikon yet.
Aside from this the Nikon D3100 is competent. The two features- competent and lightweight is a great combination in the world of DSLR cameras.
The Nikon D3100 is also said to be a quiet Nikon DSLR.
Reviews dub the Nikon D3100 as a very quiet camera so it is perfect for getting photos of people in their element, great street photography camera plus because it has very little reduction you can take photos hand held and it will have less noise.
When we look at the Nikon D3100′s LCD you will see that it is big the only downside is that it is grainy.
When looking at your photos in this latest Nikon DSLR camera you will see a new playback feature. This feat is similar (copied) from the Leica M9 rangefinder camera.
The new playback means that when you check your histogram and zoom at the photo it will show the histogram what is in your zoom window. This makes checking highlights more accurately.
The Nikon D3100 DSLR can make it easier for you to compose photos with the AF point selections.
The images of the Nikon D3100 is pretty up to par with the D700 or D3 as long as there is good lighting.
When it has lower ISOs then the Nikon D3100 is similar to other Nikon FX cameras.
The noticeable improvement of the D3100 over the predecessors D3000 and D5000 is the advance mode switch (it has quiet, self timer, single and continiuos mode).
The Nikon D3100 also has a faster recording process. It also records images with an Adaptive Dynamic Range (ADR).
You can shoot HD movies with the D3100 but like many FX camera it has poor tracking and audio processing.
Other features which are missing from the Nikon D3100 are the kelvin white balance setting, also there is only 1 manual memory position.
This is a basic amateur Nikon DSLR camera and for beginners who want good lens and a solid performing camera then this is for them.

Easy and fun
this is a great camera. I had one, sold it and tried one of the superzooms. Bad idea. It can't compare to the quality offered by a true DSLR. So, bought another D3100 after considering a Canon. The D3100 feels much better in the hand, its easy to use and the photos are sharp and clear. High;ly recommended.
Excellent choice
Cannot believe the photos!! Love the multiple shot feature and sports mode. Still learning the more complex features.
AWESOME!
This camera is great! It's my first "real" camera; previously, all I've owned were automatic digital cameras. It's easy to use, and easy to set up. Awesome pics!
Nikon D3100
Fantastic move from a pointn'shoot camera to the DSLR arena. Unbelievable photos at a terrific price.
Awesome Camera
I been waiting for the release of these camera and finally purchase it on 9/19/10. It was worth the wait it is an awesome camera I had a canon rebel and I can't even compare the quality and the ease of use of these camera, I'm going to purchase the new lens that was just release 55-300 zoom. is great and easy to use for any one.
Great camera for all levels of photography
This camera does what other cameras do at half the price, we just finished a trip with freinds who have a camera which cost well over $1200.00 and we compared pictures, they were amazed how well this camera did in all conditions.
Great Camera
I exchanged a Canon TI1 for this Nixon D3100 and its the best thing I did. The picture quality is incredible, crisp, and clear. Canon was great too but in my opinion Nixon's picture was more clear. I love it!
Great Pics easy to use
I bought this for my wife she loves to take pictures. We had a awesome hand held and this was her first DSLR. She loves it. I am sure if you are familiar with higher end DSLR cameras the features may leave you less than impressed but if your moving into them for the money and the picture quality difference it is amazing. I looked at these several times and for the price over 500 and under 700 it's a great buy. We went around after the east coast snow (we never get it) and I just did the point and shoot without knowing really anything about the camera and I took some really great shots. So if you are asking yourself is there a real difference...the answer is YES!
Great camera
I'm very happy with this purchase. This is my first DSLR camera. I've always used pocket point and shoot. Now that my youngest is a little older and more independent (I don't have to carry him around & my hands are free now), I can grab the camera quickly and get those amazing shots. (I would not recommend it for a parent who has to attend to a baby or toddler because it takes two hands to use this camera as opposed to a pocket camera.) I have not read the direction booklet yet and have figured it out on my own. I am quick with electronics so I was able to figure it out, but it could be tricky for people who normally have a hard time in that area because it is not intuitive. The one thing I haven't figured out yet is how to use the movie function...so that is why I gave it a "good" rating on "ease of use." Glad I purchased a longer range lens as well. Was able to take amazing shots of my kid's performances even from the back of the auditorium! That's a first. Overall I am very pleased. It takes excellent pictures!!!
Great camera for DSLR beginner
This camera is my first DSLR, I have had it about a month and so far it has been really great. Very easy to use, and takes great pictures.
All around great camera
Just purchased the Nikon D3100 DSLR kit at Best Buy. Great camera, not only are all the manual features there and easily manipulated, it also works well in full auto (as a point and shoot). This is one of the main reasons I purchased this particular camera, with the intuitive Guide Mode you don't have to have a wealth of knowledge to end up with amazing results. Other features that made me choose this kit over others was it had a higher resolution (in stills and video) and higher video frame rate than most of its competitors in that price range (Cannon Ti1 shoots 20fps). The video looks great, I love the depth of field. It's just a great camera not only for beginners but also for the seasoned pro that needs a light, small DSLR.
Can Do Camera!
This camera does a great job. For my first SLR in the digital age I'm more than happy! The lenses that came with the bundle were not too shabby. I've since purchased the 50mm f/1.8, which is also great bang for the buck...
Great camera over all.
Very easy to use for the beginner with the power and features for any professional. Over all a great camera. I am very pleased with my purchase and would recommend it to anyone.
The BEST Beginner DSLR Camera PERIOD.
We had recently purchased the D5000 which by all means is a good DSLR though we wanted to get a 2nd DSLR as me and my husband are taking photography classes. I can honestly say that the D3100 may not have as many features/settings as the D5000 but the D3100 consistently produces better pictures EVERYTIME. This camera has a built-in GUIDE mode for the beginner and walks you though setting up your camera to get the shot you always wanted to take but didn't know how to setup your camera to achieve it. So it explains when you change the setting it shows you how it will affect your picture with a sample image!!!! I strongly recommend you purchase the Nikon 35mm f1.8 as a SECOND LENS - this prime lens will enable you to shoot indoors with NO FLASH as it lets in a ton of light at the widest aperture setting of 1.8. BUY THIS CAMERA you will not be disappointed!
Excellent picture quality
Considered the D5000 but waited for the D3100 to become available glad I did ,this camera has more features and is slightly smaller in size perfect for me as a novice user.Has many features that can take you to pro quality pictures. Great Camera
Outstanding
I'm a seasoned amateur and have owned 7 other digital cameras and the Nikon D40 which I had considered to be the best Camera I've ever used. I ordered the 3100 while my D40 was in for repair. At first I did not notice much of difference with the prints but when I had the time to compare them side by side, the 3100 was 30% better across the board than my D40. I shot over 100 pictures with both cameras with (3) different lenses in the automatic mode. I'm now selling my D40 which again is an outstanding camera but the processing improvement on the 3100 is simply better at least in the Auto modes. I've not had much time to get into the manual side yet. Only thing missing is an external mic option for videos which Nikon could have added for about a buck.
amazing camara
very easy to use , supreme image quality , i love it
Starter camera
My daughter loves the camera! the picture quality is awsome. She did mention that when taking video (with audio) the sound of the focusing function is incorporated in the video.
Great Camera
I initially was looking at the D-90 but saw where the D-3100 was coming out so decided to wait. I compared the two cameras on line and except for price could not tell that much difference. I'm sure the D-90 has more "bells and whistles" but right now I don't see where I would nees them. I've had the camera for a little over a week and each day I discover some new feature. The picture quality is excellent and the camera is very easy to use - the on board menus are very easy to understand and any questions that arise are easily found in the instruction booklet that comes with the camera or in the more comprehensive one on the included disk..
Great Camera for all user
Great Camera for the beginner or the seasoned user. Ease of use and Guide makes it a Great Starter DSLR. Nikon is still King!
Best Camera EVAAR!
I am a high school student and an aspiring photographer. I just recently purchased this camera, and it is the best I have ever owned. I do not know much about DSLR camera, but this one makes me look like a pro - it is extremely easy to use, contains awesome features, takes amazingly beautiful photographs, and the HD video quality is breathtaking. I was confused whether to chose Canon or Nikon, but now I amextremely glad that I went with this Nikon 3100.
Overall great camera
I bought this camera after owning many point and shoot ones. As I am new to photography, I can say that I've had a very easy time understanding how to operate the camera. The controls are straight forward and are easy to use. The online tutorial that Nikon offers is very nice. It explains all that the camera can do and how to use the environment to get the best picture. The quality of the picture is great. It also gives the choice of resolution (high, medium, low) as with the actual picture size. I've owned it for a little over a month and very happy I made the purchase. I would recommend this to anyone wanted a high quality picture with flexibility to find your style of picture taking.
Awesome camera
This is my first D-SLR camera and i LOVE it. It is easy to use and if you are having a tough time figuring something out it has a guide mode. I recieved this camera the night before leaving on vacation for mexico and had no issues figuring it out. Viewing other D-SLR cameras and their, the price really isnt that bad for this one.
great camera for beginner
For an entry level camera , I think this is the best. User interface is intuitive. It also has a guide mode for clueless beginners. I just wish it has an external microphone input ..because you will hear your lens auto focusing noise when using video, but then again the AUDIO quality is nice and clear. The 'S" sounds sound clear, no "lisping" or 'esh' sounds from words that has "S' in them.. unlike when you use cheaper point and shoot cameras.. great Out of camera images.. I set my pictures in "vivid' so the photos are vibrant and sharp. this is a great camera for it's price.
excellent
I brought this camera insted canon rebel. The picture quality is awsome,it is extremely easy to use, contains awesome features, takes amazingly beautiful photographs, and the HD video quality is breathtaking. Its slightly smaller in size perfect for me.I am just disappointed about the HDMI cables which they never provide.
Excellent camera - Excellent Pictures
Although this is Nikon's entry level SLR camera, it does 99% of what most users actually need and use. Yes, there are features and reasons to buy higher in the line, but your pictures will be no better unless you really understand how to use some of the more advanced features. Don't get caught up in the fact that the D90 has a feature and the D3100 doesn't unless you know that you need that feature....and in almost every case, if you're honest, you don't need it. Buying a d90/D7000 will mean having a more expensive, heavier camera around your neck. Don't believe the marketing words :amateur camera, semi-pro camera, etc. The D3100 will do an excellent job for almost everyone. If you want to spend more, invest in lenses, not a more expensive body. Easy to use...it has fully automatic modes, or you can make all the adjustments yourself. Use it with the wonderfully light 35mm 1.8 lens which is an excellent lens and you have a lightweight but very powerful camera capable of excellent pictures in almost any situation. Highly recommended (even to those who are considering buying a D5000,D90 or D7000). As far as video...if you want to take video, buy a video camera. It's always nice to have video capability just in case though.
Awesome for First time SLR Owner
I bought this camera after wanting a new camera since mine was only a point and shoot. I wanted to be able to create my own art. So far I can do that. I've taken amazing photos with my Nikon d3100. I love all the features with the auto and configure your own. I feel kinda special having it. I can't wait to take it site seeing. When I move soon I am looking forward to seeing everything and capturing it all my dSLR. It is easy to use and the price can't be beat. I bought the bundle and love the extra lens for easy zoom. I so recommend this to everyone!!!
good starter slr
I was shopping around online for a slr that would be a reasonably priced, yet take good pictures. This camera takes good pictures (occasionally some will come out blurry for no apparent reason). One major pitfall is the weak zoom; I will need to buy another lens at some point. Also, you have to look through the eye piece to get the best pictures. You can use a switch to allow you to use the lcd screen, but it takes longer for the camera to take the picture, uses the battery faster, and the pictures just don't seem to come out as clear. All in all though it is a nice camera, and I am hoping to have it for years to come.
Excellent Camera, Easy to use, Amazing Pictures
This is my first DSLR camera. I cannot believe what my photos have been missing. Charged it up and took my first photos as dusk and the lighting was unbelievable. I don't think you can take a bad picture with this camera. The Video quality is excellent but have not messed with that much. Just returned from a week in Hawaii with this Camera and the best photos I have ever taken. We took over 800 pictures in 7 days, viewed several of them on the camera and the battery still showed fully charged when I got back to California. I look forward to many more fun days with this camera.
99% satisfied
I've been holding out on the DSLR until someone released a model under $1000 that had full 1080p at 24fps. So when this model came out I was all about it. I wasn't very disappoited either. My only gripe is that you don't have TOTAL manual control over the video. Yo can adjust the ISO and aperature but I'm a little disappointed that you can';t adjust shutter speed. (I think it defaults to the 180 degree rule making video taken at 1.48 or 1/50). Apparently Canon DSLRs with video actually let you make the shutter speed even faster for a crisper, choppier effect. This would have been nice, but the video quality is fine. I mean, don't expect to be filming the next Oscar winner with it and there is a small amount of noise, but with the manual controls you DO have with video and the exposure lock, it's excellent. Looks great on my HD TV.
Impressive
Finally bought my 1st DSLR. Got tired of the lousy picture quality from the "point & shoots". Cannot believe the color quality , the depth of photo quality, and the clarity you get with this camera. Took a photo in the backyard and even the individual links in the chain link fence (in the background of the photo) came out crystal clear. I am not an experienced photographer by any sense of the word, but am quite pleased with the photos I get with this camera........gives you the confidence to step out and try to get those photos you always dreamed of but could never quite achieve with a point & shoot camera. If you have small children? This camera is a must.........capture those special moments in awesome clarity. You can't call those moments back, once they're gone, and babies grow up so fast...... so indulge and get this camera. You'll be glad you did! We're getting ready for a cruise to the Western Caribbean in May......can't wait to see what kind of photos I get with this camera. I plan on going downtown Cincinnati this evening to get some shots of the newest skyscraper getting its "tiara" lit as well as the Suspension Bridge getting lit up for the Bengal's game. I know the photos are going to be breathtaking.........especially with the "Guide" help built into the camera. You can't go wrong. The built in "Guide" is my version of "photography for dummies!" Love it! As far as the features go on this camera......this is basically the D3000 & D5000 combined into one, with a few very minor differences. Haven't tried the video aspect yet......but already have a good video camera, so it's doubtful I will use it for my video needs. Was a bit disappointed that no cables come wih this camera, but the SD card pops out and fits right into your laptop, so it isn't like you can't view your photos on a larger screen. All in all? Love the camera and am not one bit sorry I bought it! Would definintely purchase this camera again.......just wish I hadn't waited so long to take the DSLR plunge!
Purchased for copying photo albums
I am interested in preserving old photographs. I purchased this camera in pursuit of the lowest cost, best value RAW format camera available. Although I had two previous Nikon film SLRS, this is my first DSLR. I did not limit my search to Nikon. Using a copy stand with copy at 11 inches from the kit lens I am getting about a square foot of copy in the frame without purchasing a macro (Nikon micro) lens. The results are absolutely STUNNING. I use 14 megapixels RAW (NEF) format and the free View NX software that comes with the camera. I correct for the color of my light source with white balance adjustment in View NX software and I have an absolutely beautiful copy of old photograph albums pages. Others have commented on other applications with superb results. I have had the camera a month. I have no complaints. I took a picture of a flower with a bee on it with the kit lens on my first day. All the settings were point and shoot. I have attached a picture from my point and shoot testing. No editing at all done to this photograph taken jpg normal compression like any point and shoot. Suggested accessories for my application: extra Li battery, Nikon NC 52mm filter, and remote shutter control. File Size: 3.62 MB Image Size: L (4608 x 3072) Image Quality: Jpeg Normal (8-bit) Device: Nikon D3100 Lens: VR 18-55mm F/3.5-5.6G Focal Length: 52mm Focus Mode: AF-S AF-Area Mode: Normal Area VR: ON Aperture: F/6.3 Shutter Speed: 1/60s Scene Auto Selector: Close-up Exposure Comp.: 0EV Metering: Matrix ISO Sensitivity: Auto (ISO 400) White Balance: Auto, 0, 0
Great Entry Level SLR - and Beyond
The Nikon D3100 represents my jump from Point-and-Shoot cameras to digital SLRs. It's an attempt to take better, more visually stunning photos - and the Nikon has definitely set me on that path. I chose it over the Canon mostly because of things that were specific to me - button locations and comfort with the menus on the back of the camera. I also liked the intuitive pictures that show the impact of setting adjustments. I'm still learning the use the camera, and while the learning curve isn't as steep as I FEARED, it's definitely something to consider when making the "jump" from the point-and-shoot realm. Of course, you can just select a Mode ("Auto" for instance), and the camera will take gorgeous pictures - and that's a good confidence builder. But a good point-and-shoot will do the same thing! So when I look at the reasons to go out and buy an SLR, it boils down to the adjustable settings and the ability to "play" with the camera to create exciting and unique visual effects. That's been the part that's been hard to learn. The picture quality is amazing. My wife and I have been "fiddling" with it for a few weeks now, with our biggest usage coming at our son's soccer games. There are still some things to learn about how to operate it properly, but once we hit some pictures correctly...WOW! The colors, the details, the image quality, it was all amazing. I've sat down with a much more experienced friend who has been working with Digital SLRs for a long time. He was very impressed with the features present on this camera at this price point, given that these features usually appeared on cameras costing $1000+ just a couple of years ago. My Nikon was also much lighter than his Canon, which was a shock to him as well. Seeing that, I realized that this is not just an entry-level option, but a camera that has the ability to lead me in my growth as an SLR photographer.
Great camera for a beginner
Love this camera so easy to use. I love that it has a feature that explains how to use it. Great features awesome pictures great prints. Love the 70-300 mm lens takes great pictures from far very clear.
Great Pictures, Video OK!
Great pictures. Ease of use is amazing. All the major settings at your fingertips. I would not buy for the 1080p video recording as your main reason because it is just OK and you would be better off getting a camcorder for that. The best entry level dslr on the market!!!!!!
Very pleased
We got this and we couldn't be more pleased. Ease of use and quality of pics are great for beginners like us to SLR digital cameras. Everything you need to get going is in the kit - we also bought another lens and a bag and DVD. Highly recommended.
ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS CAMERA!
OKAY so My Fiance got me this camera for my birthday and Ive only had this camera for a few hours and I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! I went to a vocational school for 2 years for Printing and Graphics and my SR year we got a NEW Canon that had just came out and I played with it a few times and that canon does not even compare to the Nikon D3100! I always said Id never own a Nikon but honestly wouldnt have it any other way now! Nikon's specs compared to Canons def top in DSLR camera. The Nikons pictures are crispt and clear and its just wonderful! The battery seems to be doing good and still says its fully charged after HOURS of playing with it. If you read the manual you learn more too, so I recommend doing so. There are so many features for this camera that it will probably take me a few days to play with them! BUT This camera is DEF worth the money! and if your looking at getting a DSLR this is a wonderful choice!
Very good for a newbie to SLR Cameras
This is my first ever SLR so take what I say with what it's worth. The camera is very light yet feels solid. Takes very good quality pics and I am still learning the plethara of settings etc.. If you like something that can stand up to cameras costing more then $500 more then this one you should get this one! Love it and the pics look very clear!
Perfect camera for beginners or advanced
Excellent quality, excellent pics, super easy to use, & great for beginners if you are one. I am a local graphic artist in Washington, and I use this camera 100% of the time when taking pics. I then use the pics in photoshop to make websites, fliers, CD covers, calendars, and any other promotional products a customer may need. I've used all the Canon Rebels including the Rebel T2i, and this is by far the best. I know people get stuck on this cameras14 Megapixel compared to the Canon Rebel T2i 18 Megapixel, but comparing pics I've taken side by side with both cameras shows no difference. The plus, Nikon accessories are cheaper. In the end, its always a personal preference in which you end up buying. I like Canon cameras, I own the Rebel T2i, but this new Nikon won my heart after playing around with the display model at the store. And this Nikon is soooooo much cheaper. I bought this as a bundle pack.
Great pictures, OK video, and very easy to use.
I just got this camera a couple of days ago for my photography class and I am stunned. The picture quality is great and it is super easy to use. The video is full 1080P but it only has mono sound and no Mic input jack. The kit lens (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR) is ok but I would recommend the 55-200 lens to have a little bit longer zoom. Overall this camera is great for the beginner photographer who wants a DSLR or somebody looking for a new camera. You won't be disappointed with the Nikon D3100!
GREAT VALUE
THIS CAMERA IS EXCELLENT!! ONCE YOU READ THE MANUAL AND WATCH THE VIDEO, YOU CAN TAKE BEUTIFUL PICTURES. i AM NOT A PROFESSIONAL PHOTOGRAPHER, JUST LOVE TO SNAP SHOTS OF LIFE, BUT I HAVE BEEN GETTING PROFESSIONAL QUALITY AND ALL OF MY FRIENDS ARE ASKING ME TO TAKE THEIR PICTURES!!!!! DEFINITELY RECOMMEND THIS CAMERA FOR THE NEXT STEP UP FROM A POINT AND SHOOT CAMERA. LOVE IT!!
Excellent Camera for Beginner or Amateur...
I bought this camera as the kit with 55mm and 300mm lens with a bag, a replacement for my Fujifilm FinePix compact system digital camera. I wanted something that would provide a more quality, professional looking result without having to go take college classes for using it. I found exactly what I was looking for in the Nikon D3100. While you are able to control the camera and find the result you want... there is also the option to point and shoot for those times that you just want a photo journal of an event. The only two downfalls I can provide from something like a full frame D90 or 70 is the inability to auto focus without an auto focus lens and remote funcions. Other than that, this camera take amazing pictures. I'm extremely happy with my investment.
Awesome
This camera is AWESOME I have had mine for 3 weeks now and I love it very easy to use pictuer qualty is very good I love this camera
Wonderful Camera
Wonderful Camera. I would buy this over the D5000. Amazing for the price. Works great with the DX lenses!!
Great camera for a beginner! Love it!!
I bought this camera as my first DSLR upgrade from a point/shoot olympus. I absolutely love it and have had so much fun taking pictures of just about everything. My friend bought one the same day and both of us have a blast with it! I'm planning on taking the camera to Central/South America with me next summer. This camera allows even a novice/beginner to become a great photographer! I debated between the 3000 and 3100 and believe I made the right decision between the two!
Great features for the Price !
This is a great beginner camera and or for the seasoned pro back up camera. Controls are easy to use, quality of captures is great. I am new to the video part and still learning the controls. Menus are easy to maneuver, study the owner's manual while the battery is charging and you will have no problems. Quality of the Nikkor lens can't be beat! Positives: Image quality, compact size, compatibility of Nikkor lenses, lightweight. Negatives: Small body for big hands. AF-s Lenses for Autofocus only, all others are manual focus.
Great Camera
Nice Camara for a beginner, my wife is using it, and is very easy to learn with nice features and effects.
Amazing camera for any level.
I received this camera as a family Christmas present this morning and my entire day has been filled with amazing photos. This is my first dslr but the ease of use is astounding! I quickly snapped the camera into manual mode and my pictures boasted quality and excellent contrast--and I'm a beginner. The camera is also excellent for indoor use; the ISO ranges from 100 -3200 +Hi-1 and Hi-2 modes. The high ISO's offer shooting in lower light with little to no graininess, something I had not expected. If you're a beginner or intermediate, if you're pro then I guess you won't need reviews, this camera is for you. I recommend a UV filter to protect your lens from scratches also. Extraordinarily satisfied.
Better than I imagined!
I received this camera for Christmas. I had done a lot of research and knew this was the camera for me. I was surprised at just how easy it was to use right out of the box. The features are many, the quality is exceptional, and the value is fantastic!! I've read a few negative reviews about the quality of the video, but, the few videos I took today were really good. Overall, I LOVE this camera and would recommend it to anyone with a point and shoot camera wanting to take their photography to the next level.
Great 1st DSLR
After debating for the last year, i finally decided to make the jump to a DSLR from a point and shoot. Couldn't be happier that i did. I have 2 friends who are professional photographers and they both shoot Nikon so the Cannon/Nikon debate was never an issue. The ability to borrow equipment from them made it a no brainer to go with the Nikon. I did debate between the 3100 and the 7000. Went with the 3100 due mainly to price. VERY glad I did! The quality of the pictures is outstanding and the camera just feels incredibly solid in your hand. I got the 55-300 lens kit and both lenses are spectacular. The 7000 would have ben a waste of money for me. I am a true amateur and this camera does more than enough for me. I haven't done much with the video recording yet but the little I have it seems to be good. I bought this camera to take great photos, not videos, but it is a nice feature to have. My only gripe is that Nikon does not include any cables. Spent $1000 on the package deal and they should include cables to hook the camera up to your computer at the very least.
Love this Camera
My husband gave it to me for Christmas. I have always enjoyed photography, but only recently started making an effort to have time for it, so this is my first camera that is not a point and shoot. I am still figuring out some settings, but even with everything on "Auto" it takes beautiful photos. I am sure once I finish reading the manual and play with it a little more, I will be more comfortable with it. I also love the 55-200mm lens, great for photos outside.
Perfect for me!!!
My boyfriend bougt this camera for me and I love it. I love taking pictures but have always had a point and shoot and got frustrated with the quality of pictures they took. It's very easy to use right out of the box and there's so many different things this camera can do. I decided to take a photography class so I can learn the full potential. Would definitely recommend to anyone!!
Great camera
Excellent price and excellent camera. I would recomended for video is very professional
Great DSLR to start with
I purchased my Nikon D3100 about two weeks ago and I was surprise to see how easy it was to use. The Guide feature is great especially for a beginner like me! I have nothing negative to say about this camera, it's awesome! One thing though, you might have to buy an extra battery to further enjoy your camera for many hours, got mine from ebay for $30 shipped, and a 50mm-200mm lens would be a good addition to compliment the lens kit.
Great for both beginners and professionals
I have had this camera for over a month now, and have not one single complaint! Before buying, i had been dead set on buying the Nikon D5000 for the past 4 or 5 months, but then heard about the D3100. The battery life is exceptional, camera is very lightweight (even with lens attached). Takes great shots in a large variety of locations/lighting/etc. I use my camera mostly for taking candids of friends at events and pictures of bands at extremely low-lit concerts. Sometimes flash or live-view can be very distracting, so the fact that this camera takes amazing shots sans flash, and live view can be turned off (in face, the entire screen can be turned off so nobody knows your even taking pictures) is an extremely pleasant bonus! I only use the built-in flash and 18-55 mm kit lens. I highly recommend this camera!!! Especially from Bestbuy, because it is the absolute lowest price in any store AND you can use 18 months to pay for it with no interest! <3 this soooo much :) P.S. I have never used a dslr or slr before; this is my first. I have not looked at the manual, only a few camera reviews on Youtube; that's how amazingly easy it is to learn how to use this camera. The Guide mode is also amazingly helpful! I have no scratches at all. I have a clear UV filter to protect my lens at all times, as well as a cell phone screen protector that i cut to fit the live-view screen.
Nice Camera for step up into DSLR
Decided to step up into the world of DSLR after beeing disapointed with the inability to capture appropriate photo's during recent vacations with point and shoot's. I researched the entry level DSLR's and decided on the D3100. All I can say is WOW!! The picture quality is outstanding and the operation of the camera is easy for a novice like myself. I can't wait to try it during my next trip .My only concern is that the DSLR camera's will turn into a money pit, ie lenses, tripods, flashes etc..... I think the value is excellent for all the features and I won't outgrow it for quite sometime.
EXCELLENT FOR SLR BEGINNERS!
I went back and forth on whether or not I wanted to upgrade from a simple point and shoot to a digital slr for months. Ultimately I decided to go for it with the Nikon D3100 and have LOVED it since!!! It is super easy to use and takes amazing pictures!! I'm no professional photographer so I couldn't tell you the first thing about what to look for in a camera but this is by far the best camera I have ever owned! Now that I have a camera that works this good, I find myself experimenting more and more with the different features it has and can't get enough of it! I strongly reccommend reading through the manual if you are new to slr cameras like myself. It's really easy to read through and breaks down each feature and how to use them in simple terms.
Outstanding pictures, excellent price
I moved to this camera from a Nikon d60 and will never look back. I know the d3100 is advertised an an entry level model, but it is really much more than that. I consider myself a somewhat advanced amateur/hobbyist photographer, not doing it for a living but more for my own amusement and entertainment. I had read all the reviews including the ones with some negative comments, but decided that the positives seemed to be much stronger. Since I already had the three key Nikkor DX lenses (18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G AF-S VR zoom, 55-200mm f/4-5.6G VR zoom, and 35mm f/1.8G AF-S fixed) I bought the d3100 "body only." The camera is simply wonderful, easy to set up, easy to use, and produces great pictures. I don't use it for movies very much (I think a camcorder is better for that function), but for the kinds of still pictures that I take (portraits, landscapes, family gatherings, candids and the like) the d3100 is superb. I use the P mode and I generally set the white balance on auto and ISO on either auto or 400. Since I generally don't need prints at more than 8 x 10 I set picture quality at basic/medium -- this gives me much more storage space on the disc since I'm not using unnecessary pixels. I would set higher resolutions if I want larger size prints. When using flash I like to "bounce" it off the ceiling whenever possible so I use the Nikon SB-400 Speedlight Flash instead of the built-in; this is a very capable and affordable unit that is perfect for what I need a flash unit for. I took several hundred pictures over the Christmas/New Year period, including some outside in the Sunday evening blizzard, and the picture quality was outstanding -- well focused, sharp and clear. In particular, the ones in the blizzard were great -- I adjusted the flash to various levels of brightness and was amazed at the way the falling snowflakes showed up. In summary, this is a great camera for the price, and is one that you can begin your digital experience with and then use to grow into a better photographer who will have more and more fun and pleasure with it.
Fantastic Camera
I am new to SLR photography, and I couldn't be happier with this camera. I was taking great photos right out of the box.
Awsome Camera for the Price!!
This camera is Fantastic! You might have to practice and get use to Night Time Photo's as the Automatic Setting will OVER-EXPOSE your night pictures. Other then that it is great. I was debating between the Canon T2i $800 or Nikon D3100 ($600). I ended up with Nikon D3100 because you get the same Picture Quality & it does come with the 1080p HD Video w/ Full Focus. The full focus however is not as great as Nikon describe. But Video is not the main thing for me, I like Nikon for its picture Quality. Although Canon T2i has 18MP. Megapixel isn't much of a big deal unless your going to CROP a bunch. So to conclude my review on Nikon D3100. Its so far the best DSLR I have used, Wonderful pictures. But remember if you want that SHARP & Crispy pix, you should always shoot in RAW. Thats what i do. but if you dont got time the AUTO setting does a great job also. can't go wrong with the price range
Great Pictures
I have owned Nikon's since 1962, and currently own a D-100 and D-80. For beginner to intermediate this is a great camera. Easy to use, lightweight, fantastic picture quality. The HD camera is a little shaky in sharpness but still has excellent resolution. Excellent ca,era for the price.
Versatile Camera
The D3100 is my second Nikon DSLR - previously owned a D70. The D3100 is versatile enough and easy enough to use for the beginner and for the relatively serious amateur photographer. I particularly like the smaller size and lighter weight. A good camera to consider.
a great camera
Was an awsome price 599 on sale the pictures are clear and sharp. Ive got a class 10 memory card in it and it can take over 25 pictures without stopping. It takes some awsome pictures and it was easy to learn the features
Awesome camera, but a little complex for beginners
I have a few friends who have really nice, top-of-the-line cameras that take the most amazing pictures. I spoke with them before purchasing this camera and they all told me that I was making a terrific choice, and the difference in picture quality would be remarkable. Boy were they right! I actually bought this as a Christmas present for a family member. She takes pictures at EVERY family get-together. Birthdays, Easter, you name it. But even she was a little overwhelmed with all the features. I guess it just takes some messing-around with. Overall, awesome camera!
Great Camera~Easy to Use
I LOVE my new Nikon D3100 DSLR Camera....I still have a lot to learn, but it is so easy to use...Glad my husband finally broke down and bought this for me...
awesome camera with affordable price!
D3100 is a really nice camera, a big step forward from D3000. Enjoying the photography with this camera :)
Awesome!
When we initially bought this camera, it stopped working properly within the first two weeks. There was an issue with the live view flipping back and forth and then the camera wouldn't turn off. We exchanged it for another as we simply loved the camera itself. It takes fantastic photos, the best we've ever had, and very professional looking. It does a bazillion different things, literally. It's not exceptionally heavy and it has the live view feature which is totally awesome. Most digital SLR's at this price do not have the live view feature. I would not buy another camera without it. In addition it has VIDEO. Many SLR's do not, although people assume that they will, so you really have read through the features list carefully to see if it has live video. We are totally happy with this camera. Our previous Cannons (3) have all had issues with the auto focus eventually breaking after a few years. We're told it's a common Cannon issue in MANY of their cameras due to the auto focus switch being in the body of the Cannon and the fact that they use a plastic pin to hold it in place which wears out over time and is costly to fix since it is located in the camera body. Nikon puts their autofocus in the lense so it is easier to get to in order to fix and also they use a metal pin which rarely breaks. This is the first time we've ever had a NIKON and we hIghly recommend this camera.
Perfect camera for starting
Camera has all the feature and function to prepare for the next level of professional cameras. This will make the next level easy to use or I could just stay with this one.
Awesome camera
This is our 1st DSL camera. The pictures are absolutely amazing. Took me a few photos to figure everything out, but for the most part it's very easy. Almost like a compact point-and-shoot. We bought this mainly to take photos of our children playing sports. The photos look grerat! Still working on the HD movies, but that's not why we bought the camera in the first place.
Great product!!!
This is a great camera. I bought it for my wife for Christmas and I find myself using it more than her...lol.
This is a great camera.
I purchased this camera as an upgrade from my D80. I made sure all of my other Nikon lenses were compatible with this camera. I take about 2500 photos per month. I was looking for a camera & lens that would handle lower light conditions without flash and have a quieter shutter (I got both in this package). I am keeping the D80 as spare this time just in case I have problems with the new one during an important event.
Excellent Quality
The pictures from this camera are terrific. Robust features are easily accessible and perform superbly. This camera has excellent beginner-to-advanced features that are great for quick shooting or complex manual photography. My teenage daughter is a novice photographer. She began using the camera so much and learned how to use many of it's features so quickly that I bought another for her this past Christmas.
My first DSLR and I love it.
I used to always have a regular digital camara, point & shoot, but with this DSLR, you really take much nicer pictures and you don´t have to be a pro do be able to do so because it is really simple to choose a setting and take a bunch of pictures and then choose the nicest ones, the camera can take several pictures per second so you really catch the best one every time. The two lenses it came with allow you to take great pictures at short distance and long distance, images are really crisp and nice.
Good find for 599.99
Its a good buy for 599.99. The camera could have been better than the d5000 but they lowered the fps and took away the wireless remote option. Overall I think that its an alright camera. I need to use it more.
Great
This is the first DSLR that I have bought. So far it is what I expected. Still experimenting but definitely not disappointed with the purchase.
AWESOME Digital SLR
This is my first Digital SLR camera. This camera blows away the point and shoot cameras I have owned in the past. Camera offers lots of features for the money, and shoots awesome photos and 1080 movies. Hard to beat the value and features this camera offers. Great camera for the beginner or moderately advanced SLR user.
Great camera for action shots!
I primarily bought this camera to better be able to shoot pictures of my kids sporting events. It works great, even indoors with no flash.
great camera for beginners and advanced users
I originally bought the NIKON d3000 but I realized it didn't have live view with it; so I upgraded to the d3100. I have to say that this is the best camera I have ever owned. This is my first dslr camera and it very easy to use. The guide mode is very helpful when taking pictures of anything especially b&w photos. I recommend this camera to all photography enthusiasts.
great camera for beginners and experts
its a really wonderful camera takes great pictures i love it!!
Pricey but it's a 1080i Video-recorder also
The Nikon brand speaks for itself. The D3100 has great features as do most SLRs in this price range. The best feature is that I do not need a high-end video camera as this Nikon records videos in 1080i. Live screen images on an SLR is so not pure but is appreciated for cold outdoor picture-taking when view-finder fogs up.
Entry level SLR
I bought this camera for Christmas as my first SLR camera and while I was initially happy with it I soon learned that the D3100 lives up to just being an entry level SLR. Pros: - the camera takes great pictures in Manual mode. - the video looks good Cons: - the camera takes sub-par pictures indoors in Auto or in any of the scene modes. A friend had the Canon d60 which blew the D3100 away in image quality; however, the D60 has a horribly designed interface. I hate the squash pad in the middle of the command wheel. So I am now moving the D7000. If the D7000 is out of your price range I recommend buying the D90. If you're undecided between Nikon and Canon go with Nikon due to a better camera design and better low ISO performance.
Completely satisfied!
I have had the chance to use this camera now for a couple of months. The picture quality is fantastic. The video quality is surprisingly good! There are more features than I can possibly understand yet, but I am learning new things about the camera regularly, and discovering even more ways to make it work for me! It takes fast burst pictures, which is one of the main reasons I bought it. Low light pictures are also great! It is easy to use right out of the box without going into the details of the features, and it has enough features to satisfy a more serious photographer. I highly recommend it!
Simple to learn with great picture quality
This camera is an excellent purchase for the price. It is fairly easy to learn and has many great features. Picture quality is excellent. We use it to take photos of my son playing baseball, and the shutter speed is excellent and have gotten some amazing in-action photos.
Great pics easy to use.
love my new camera. Easy to use. Great quality for the price.
Great Camera
The price was great as I got this camera as a bundle deal onsale. I was upgrading from my Nikon Coolpix and the pictures are amazing. There are many features on this camera and because I am not a professional I mainly keep it on Auto and the pictures of the kids come out great!
Great camera for beginners
Love the camera. Still learning all the camera can do.
Great camera for beginner
I'm having a great time with my camera and I would definitely recommend it to a friend.
Absolutely OUTSTANDING!
I have finally found a digital SLR that my wife can use on "automatic" and I can use to adjust any way I choose. Right out of the box the D3100 performs. From switch on to shoot, I captured an eagle in flight, 150 yards away, in a matter of mere seconds. Perfect focus, perfect stop action, perfect lighting! If you're looking for a digital SLR to get back to the good old "film" days - - STOP LOOKING - Buy the D3100
Great camera for work and a beginner.
First got the 3000 but found that you have to use viewfinder. Since I use for business claims, needed something easier. This was the ticket. Honestly it can do so much have never had opportunity to even read about it all. But for taking photos, this is very high quality and easy to use.
Replace a d3000
After a year of terrible indoor pictures with the d3000, we traded up to the d3100. I dont know what was wrong with the d3000 but the new d3100 is a 100% improvement. i am back to the quality of pictuers when i had my Nikon d40 Brenda
Great first DSLR buy!
I was super indecisive about purchasing my first DSLR camera...if I even wanted/needed a DSLR camera! But after doing months of research, I finally decided on the D3100. This really is the perfect camera for any DSLR beginner. "Guide" mode makes taking shots insanely easy right out the box. The camera is EXTREMELY intuitive, easy to use, lightweight, and of high picture quality. I love it!!! The battery life is amazing, I had it on for at least 8 hours yesterday and it still read "fully charged." I didn't think I needed all of the "extra" that came with a DSLR, but if you're anything like me and on the fence in terms of deciding...just upgrade. It's totally worth it, and the picture quality truly speaks for itself. Plus, it's great having the option to switch to Manuel once I really get the hang of all of the features this camera has to offer.
Great for DSLR beginner
Bought this for my wife who is allergic to technology, but I grew tired of her complaining about our point and shoot camera not giving the pictures she wanted. With the built in trainer on this camera, it has been great for her to learn the new features and how to get the adjustments for the different shots. We have only had it for a month now, but she is really enjoying the picture improvement for the point and shoot.
Nikon D3100 is a great camera
I´m happy with my brand new D3100 y make very good photos alrady. Very recomenden for amateur photographers.
An incredible camera.
I've been buying and using cameras for a very long time, and this is my 4th digital camera (not counting the ones that appear in cell phones and other stuff) but my first digital SLR. I am overwhelmed with both the quality and flexibility of this one. The pictures it takes are gorgeous. Photo modes are a little bit overwhelming but easy to use once you learn which to choose in a given situation. I recommend any new owner take the time to really learn the details offered by this camera. I got the most from one of the included intro videos. I'll admit I don't really need 14 Megapixels, but I guess too many pixels is not a problem. I'm really glad I bought this one.
Easy
this camera is easy to use. But i HIGHLY recommend watching the training video that comes with it. I got more out of that than the manual.
Great value for money
Great value for money. Love the performance on this camera.
Great camera to tranisiton to DSLR
I picked this camera up a few weeks ago and it is my first DSLR. I have held off for quite some time from making this purchase because I wanted to see prices come down some and technology become a little more solid at a consumer-entry level. I am more than satisfied with this camera and am looking forward to spring and summer where I hope to take some great shots and begin to build a portfolio.
Great, but p&s auto mode is not exactly impressive
I am familiar with SLR functionality only in film, this was my first Dslr, so I understand the obvious differences, and am quickly learning the less obvious ones. The biggest deciding factor for my purchase was that when I needed to make things simple, this camera can operate much like a point & shoot in that it will make all the necessary focal and light adjustments, determine if the flash is necessary, and auto focus. The only manual operation is the zoom range. My issue is with the less than accurate decisions the camera makes. The image is almost always blurry, poorly focused. Unless the subject is completely still, the chosen shutter speed is almost always too slow. It also often chooses to use a flash when not really necessary, and more importantly opts out of one at times when it could have helped. Of course these things can be avoided with more user input, but a lot of my uses require a p&s capability, and I'm a bit disappointed in that regard. Otherwise, Nikon quality is superb, and the camera is a bargain for what it is.
Great camera for a beginner
GREAT CAMERA FOR ENTRY LEVEL. WISH IT HAD EXPOSURE BRACKETING BUT STILL HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Wonderful Camera!
After reading the reviews about this camera, we decided to get it, and I'm glad we did! It's a wonderful camera, and the instructional DVD that came with it really helped us to get familiar with the camera's main functions and take beautiful pictures right away.
Great Camera Straight out of the Box
I haven't used a SLR camera since high school and was worried I would have trouble using the features and focusing the camera. I haven't had any problems, straight out of the box I was shooting like a pro (at least I felt like it). I have been able to get close up on my grand kids while they are doing sports and it looks like I'm right next to them!
Great introduction to DSLRs.
This is a great camera if you are just getting into DSLRs. Guide Mode is a great way to get acquainted with the settings available. Add a fast SD card, such as the Sandisk Extreme, to really get the most out of the camera.
Great camera
Daughter in art school uses this camera. It's just the right amount of camera for her as a young, serious student.
Great camera
Easy to use. Very clear pictures. Not too heavy. User friendly.
Having fun taking pictures
I got this camera as a gift and I love it! The reason why I wanted a DSLR camera is to take pictures of the kids doing their sports. It's better than I expected! I've taken 450 pictures in a month. I'm enjoying learning how to use this camera. I'm sure my pictures will get even better.
So much fun to take pictures!
I had a casio camera and hated the picture quality and wanted a camera that would take good pictures... I did lots of research and wanted to get a nikon, and chose the 3100. It is a good size and like the video. I got amazing picures on a family vacation and it was easy to carry around. I cant wait to show them off to everyone. I would definetly recomend this to anyone who is looking for a great camer is is seriouse about taking great pics..
Use for home and family pics...
Love the camera. Easy to use and takes great pics. My daughter (15) loves it and is often stealing it from me to take pics.
Excellent camera for beginners
I am using this camera since last 6 month and quite happy with the performance. It's easy to use. Also as beginner you may wish to learn photoshop basics. that will help you some extra. you MAY refer Click Here! .
Excellent beginner camera!
I got this camera for myself for christmas. I really enjoyed the buy and instore pick-up deal. And the camera is awsome. I still haven't used all of the features. but as a beginner, I really appreciate the potencial of this camera! I am very pleased with it.
Excellent Camera
I had purchased a Nikon P100 when my son was born because I wanted something to take good pics and HD video. The camera is good, don't get me wrong, but my wife hated using it because of the shutter speed and the processing time after you took the picture. I had even purchased a better SD card that the best buy sales guy told me would help process it faster. So for Christmas I bought the 3100 for her to use and she and I love using it. Fast, Simple and takes beautiful pictures. The 3100 is about $300 more but in my opinion it is worth it.
Great camera for biginner or professional
This is the easiest camera to use and it takes great shots with little set up. You can take pictures in any light level and the shots a great
Great pictures
Great photos but could use more instructions on all the info the camera is able to do.
Great camera
Got this camera as a Christmas gift with a Zoom lense from 70-300mm. Love it. As a new owner of a digital SLR, I quickly found out that there is a lot I need to learn. Therefore, I specially LOVE: the build in guide, the built-in photo editing, and the "Vibration Reduction" features.
Awsome Digital Camera
The DVD in my package had me taking wonderful shots the first day. The camera controls are intelligently placed for quick and easy operation. There are features that satisfy the novice and fine tuning controls for the most demanding professional. The best camera I have ever owned bar none.
Best camera for first time digital SLR buyers.
I bought this for my wife for Christmas and every time she uses it she says "I love this camera!". I think Nikon clearly makes the best cameras. To my eye the picture quality is incredible (better than Canon), and the software is very intuitive and easy to use. I bought it online for in-store pickup two days before Christmas, and it worked great. I was able to save time in the store and it was also $50 cheaper online than the price in the store! The price was as low as anywhere on the internet. We are very happy with this camera.
Love my Camera
Love my new Nikon D3100. Still trying to get used to the DSLR features, so it's hard to make too many comments.
D3100 14.2 MP Dig SLR Camera
This is a good camera. However, we have had some problems with the auto focus. If the background is brighter then the subject it does not focus. This may just be a reflection on our lack of knowledge using the camera, but it is frustrating at times. Will have to review documentation and DVD's for answers.
Fantastic and powerful camera
I am a beginning photographer and I love this camera. It is powerful and captures very nice photos. With so many features, it is a bit overwhelming but the beauty of digital is that I can take hundreds of pictures to learn how to use all of the features. I have run into situations where the camera will focus and say it is ready to take a picture but the camera will not respond. I know this is due to how I am using it, i.e. too close to a subject, but it can be frustrating when I cannot figure out what the issue is. I would recommend this camera hands down.
Got Away from Point and Shoot - First Digital SLR
I've wanted a SLR for a long time and finally broke down and got one. I have been so tired of only getting a couple good photos out of my Point and Shoots, I just bit the bullet and paid the money and got a real camera. Now every picture I take is amazing! I have kids and was tired of losing so many photos to poor quality, espicially with things motion. Now I catch everything the first time. I always due a lot of research before buying anything, and I ended up at this camera. Its still not radically expensive and it has all the features you would ever want on a camera like this. Nikon's website has some great tutorials also, if you want to get in-depth with the features. They all work great. Couldn't be happier. I also purchase this camera with an additional 55-200VR lens that was on sale for $100 off and was definately worth it. The obvious is that your not going to stick this one in you pocket, but its worth carrying around on your travels because you won't miss anything anymore.
Great intro SLR camera!
This is a great SLR camera for newbies! Takes fantastic pictures right out of the box and you don't even have to have knowledge of how to focus, f-stops, aperture, etc. The included lens is okay for general shots, but you will probably want to get something with more zoom. This is really a minor critique -- everything else is great -- including battery life. The pictures are excellent and much better than anything my old pocket digital camera ever took (or my phone, for that matter).
Excellent DSLR
The D-3100 DSLR is typical Nikon quality, and is feature packed. One thing I find useful is to have a full help system built in so questions can be answered without digging out the manual.
Awesome Purchase
I wanted to get a dslr camera since a long time ago. I finally got the money for it and I went to buy it. It is great!! It's perfect for my needs. I'm a beginner as a photographer and this camera is very easy to use.
Awsome professional grade for beginner
I love how simple it was to set up and use. The info button is awesome, and with the eye-fi memory card this camera sends all my photos straight to my phone and computer as soon as I take the pic. I am a married dad of 4 kids and all my children are in sports. I LOVE capturing special moments and this camera can do it very well.
Great for a new DSL user
Purchased for my daughter new to DSLR. Easy to pick up and use. She is learning the other features. Choose over the Canon, other sites picked this one over the canon
Great Camera!
This is my first Digital SLR Camera. It takes great pictures and videos!
Overall good starter dslr
This is a good dslr starter camera. Takes a good picture, does well in low light, well constructed. On the other hand, the LCD is low quality, the 1080p movie mode with a max 24 fps is not as smooth as I like, the supposedly real time af for movies is very poor, focusing noise can be heard in the audio. I compared this to the Canon t2i and returned the D3100. The t2i picture quality was a hair better IMO. The rear LCD is a big improvement. The t2i was easier to navigate the controls with some better options. But, the t2i feels cheaply built vs the d3100, felt like a toy vs an $800 camera. Get the d3100 if your new to dslr's and just want to take pictures, video not really needed, and your budget is tight. When on sale for $599 its a great deal. Get the t2i if you will be using a lot for video, which for me is important.
Great Camera. Nice Features.
i'm wanting to step into freelance photography and thought this would be a perfect first camera of choice. so far, it's lived up to it's specs and really is a fun camera. clearly to a novice the features and options might be intimidating at first, but if you take the time to learn the camera, all it has to offer will come to you. i personally believe it's a bit pricey for a beginner, considering accessory cost, etc. essentially, it's a great camera. take the time to learn it's features and you'll feel better about your investment :) P.S. I took a picture of the arch here in St. Louis. Enjoy!
Great entry-level DSLR at a great price
I can't say enough about this camera, I totally love it. It has many awesome in-camera features, including different editing options. You can switch between Manual and Autofocus if you want to work on your photography skills. I only wish I'd gotten the 55-200mm zoom lens as well!
Works find so far
I would like for it to take picture at a faster rate and a short hand book for more information as to what is does.
Great Camera for Fast Kids!
I'm new to the DSLR age, and do not know much about photography, so I wanted a camera that I could get great results right out of the box. My primary reason for the purchase was to be able to catch my new born and toddler in action shots, cause face it, they'll never stop for a picture! This camera does just that! I caught some great bath time moments with absolutly zero blur! I could even see the ripples of water and dropplets as he splashed! As far as all the features, I plan to take some classes to become a better photographer and eliminate the need to pay high prices for family photos! I applogize if my reveiw isn't enough for you, but if you're looking for a great camera to start with and that has all features you'll need as you learn, the Nikon D3100 is the camera for you!
One of the best things, i've ever owned..!
It's not too often, I drop big bucks on something like this. I bought this camera 6 months ago, after taking my local Best Buy associate's recommendation. Glad I did, this is an amazing camera! Just buy it, you'll see... After seeing the pics, 2 other friends bought the D3100 too...
I love this camera
This camera has helped me fall bank in love with photography! I was Photo student in college and its been a few years since i owned an slr. This camera is great for professional photographers and beginners. It doesnt have a bunch of silly features! Its a good camera and easy to use!
started out good, then it died
This camera was good, and took great pictures. Then one month after purchase, during a once in a lifetime trip to California Joshua Tree Park, it just died. It does absolutely nothing, and YES the battery is fully charged, and NO it wasn't dropped. I am extremely disappointed and my trip was ruined! I don't care if best buy gives me 10 new cameras, I will never get that trip back! Thanks for the FAIL Nikon!
Great first DSLR
All my life I have loved taking pictures. First started with a cell phone, then I got a point-n-shoot. I decided it was time for an upgrade. I decided to go with D3100 over D5000 because it seems it has better features. It is real easy to use and if you know a bit about DSLR then you wont have trouble using this. If you have couple extra hundreds of dollars then go with D5100. But this camera is great. Just get your self a wide angle lens and zoom lens and you're good to go! The only thing that I truly wish it had is EV bracketing. If you love HDR photography then bracketing is a great tool to have. It is not necessary but it helps. You will just have to adjust EV manually. PRO: Great photos Easy to use and set up with shortcut buttons Long battery life CON: No EV Bracketing! (make sure you get a 30MB/s memory card) long exposures take long to write on slower card.
Simply Great
this is the first dSLR I am using and already in love with it. This has a very easy to grip body and the features are amazing. Good for someone to start using dSLR! Highly recommended.
Excellent camera for beginner or the expert
This camera take excellent proffesional quality pictures and a great price. I am extremly happy with this purchase and would encourage anyone who is looking for a Digital SLR camera to purchase this one with no hesitations.
GREAT ENTRY LEVEL DSLR
This is the ideal DSLR camera for Photographers that are just getting into Photography. The controls are very simple and easy to use. I am planning to shoot Weddings and Fashion with my camera. I have the confidence in this camera that it will get the job done. Its pretty reasonable for the price I guess the price of the extra lenses might be the most expensive part to invest in.
I would recommend this to anyone
Just got back from two weeks in Alaska and 1700+ photos. Using the 55-300 Nikon telephoto lens, got great wildlife shots. Battery life is phenomenal. I only wish I knew how to use more of the features - bought it right before the trip. Gonna find a class. But I did get some artist quality shots despite my lack of knowledge.
My first DSLR. Great for beginners.
I bought this camera to take on a big family trip to Yellowstone. I took over 1000 pictures while on vacation. Most of the pictures are fantastic. Because I was unable to fully familiarize myself with the camera and all it's features, I missed opportunities for great photos (eg. through the window of the car, moving while in the car). I have a lot to learn to fully understand and appreciate the camera but I have to say, I've enjoyed every moment I've used it. My kids have had a chance to use it and love it as well. I'm very happy with the battery life which was one of the reasons I went for this camera. I also bought a longer lense (55-200mm) with the camera and was able to get some incredible close ups of wildlife with the lense. Nice clear photos, good color, easy to use on "auto" setting. Lots of features to "play" with and learn. I look forward to many years and great photos!
Great Entry Level Camera
Great camera for beginners. Had it for a few weeks before I realized that there was a whole lot of other things I could with it.
Great Camera
This is my first DSLR and after having the camera for 3 weeks, I cannot find anything to complain about. I was able to use the camera right out of the box without any issues.
Great camera for a novice SLR user!
This camera takes beautiful pictures in just about every situation & lighting condition and believe me I tested it! It is very easy to use and to switch back & forth between the various settings. The only problem I had was when photographing animals behind a fence the camera wanted to automatically focus on the fence not the lion.
Great pictures with good video
We have loved using this camera. It is simple to use while taking great pictures and good video. I am no expert with DSLRs so this one has been very good for us. The only real negative that I have found is shooting video can be a little tough because the lens isn't as smooth as it should be for manually zooming in and out. I also wish it had an external mic input, but the sound isn't terrible.
excellent
Everything I expected and more. Video sound recording better than expected. Picture are amazing.
Love this camera
I am a beginner and this is my first dSLR camera. I thought it would be overwhelming, and to a degree it is. The guide modes are really helpful. The picture quality is outstanding. We bought this camera mostly for our recent trip to Disney World with our our 4 year old son. The camera worked flawlessly over the 6 days we were there. I took over 1000 pictures and while some of them were not good due to operator error, for the most part the pictures were outstanding. Much more than I expected and obviously much better than a point and shoot. The guide mode came in really handy for action shots and for some night photography. I was able to take some pictures late in the evening when the sun was going down that would have been terrible, but the guide mode helped me get in the right settings and I even learned to tweak the settings to get an even better shot. I would highly recommend this camera to anyone. The only negatives so far are that strap is uncomfortable around my neck and the supplied software for transferring pictures and managing them is complicated.
I love it!
This was my first digital SLR purchase and it was well worth the money. I am a beginner - but so far I have taken awesome photos using the auto setting. Get an additional zoom lens for even better pics!
Excellent entry-level DSLR camera
The Nikon D3100 14.2-Megapixel Digital SLR Camera had high ratings when I was searching for an entry-level DSLR. When I got it home and once the battery was charged I was very impressed to be taking high quality photos immediately. The Auto mode makes it easy to use as a "point and shoot" but easy enough to move into some more of the "manual" features that the camera has to offer. The instruction manual and the DVD that came with the camera were extremely helpful for learning some of the finer points of the camera.
Far superior picture quality to prior camera
This is by far the most superior camera I have owned. Moved up from a point and shoot digital camera. This camera is sophisticated and I am just beginning to learn how to use this camera to its full capabilities. I am sure that based on what I have seen so far that I will be thoroughly happy with my investment.
User Friendly
I've had this camera for a month, to get used to it before our trip. It is my first DSLR and I couldn't be more pleased with what my amateur skills have been able to produce in photos so far. It has a lot of auto feature scene settings which are great for a beginner like me but I also like that I can grow into this camera with the manuel settings as my skills become better. I love the Guide feature on this camera. It's like having a little on-board computer telling me what to do or how to do it if I need more info. I'm still learning all that this camera can do so I'm sure a review I would write in a few more months would be full of more features that I've learned to make work for me. I'm very excited to be taking this camera on our trip.
Love this camera!!
I have had this camera since Christmas 2010, andI love everything about this camera! I can'tsay enough good things about it!! It takes great pictures with the stock lense! I can't wait to upgrade to a bigger zoom lense to see what it can do!!
Great pictures almost everytime
It is easy to use, lightweight, and takes great pictures. I have nothing negative since it is still pretty new.
Perfect for novice photographer
For my first experience with a DSLR this camera was perfect! I have gotten nothing but great comments on the photos I've taken and really enjoy using it. I did actually read the manual (which is very unlike me to do...I'm more of a learn while you do kind of person) and found it very easy to learn what functions to use in various situations. LOVE IT!
Love my camera
This was my first Nikon and dslr. My previous camera was a Canon advanced point and shoot. It was a great camera, but just not fast enough for getting pictures of my 3 year old. I recently bought this Nikon and I love it. Starting taking pictures as soon as I got it out of the box. The pictures are so crisp and clean.
Excellent choice
For the price I could not expect to have a better camera. It is performing great. I have had it about a month. I have shot a full range of photos, including close up, landscape and portaits. All have been above normal.
Great family camera
We got this camera a few weeks ago and compared to what we had before it is great. It takes beautiful pictures and is very easy to use. I am glad we went with the nikon. It is a little cumbersome to take everywhere with us, but the photos are worth it and we are carrying a diaper bag anyway, so no big deal.
Great camera
I was looking to upgrade from a point and shoot to a DSLR and was recommended to buy this one. It takes great pictures and is easy to use.
Fun - even for a beginner like me
This camera is so much fun! I have never owned a SLR before. The instructions were clear and I was out taking pictures the very first time I took the camera out of the box.
Picture quality
I Change from a Lumix Fz5, and you can see the difference in the picture quality. It is easy to use and i preferred over the Tz1 because it can shoot better pictures in darker rooms. In addition the function wheel goes 360 not like the cannon, so it makes it easy to change and fast. There is plenty of things to learn about the camera but i am happy with it. Finally the you can take pictures using the LCD.
Best Camera Around
Anyone looking for a great digital SLR camera, look no further. This one is GREAT. Easy to use, yet still allows you all the functions of a professional camera. The camera takes the best pictures and it's so easy to correct any flaws (red eye, etc.). I wasn't a fan of Nikon cameras before, but I am hooked now. If you make changes to a picture on the camera, it doens't delete or change the original, it makes a copy. This allows you the comfort to know you can always go back to your original picture if you want to. My wife wasn't a fan of getting an SLR camera at first (too difficult to use), but now she won't put it down. Put it on Auto, point and shoot. It's really that easy. I can't wait to get outside and take pictures. The instruction manual is so easy to read and gives you great examples of what the settings should be in various situations (light, dark, sports, kids, etc.). This is a MUST HAVE camera for anyone who wants to upgrade to a new, better camera.
Awsome Camera we absolutley love it!
Right from the box we opened it up put in the memory card and i was off taking photo's trying out all the settings. We charged the battery that night and in the morning we were out taking photos all day. We averaged about 300 to 400 photos over the next few days on a single charge plus small little video clips learning how everything works. I finally recharged the battery 3 weeks later after about 4000 pictures which we kept transferring to the computer. Being a complete beginner at photography it took a month to figure out the ideal setting on the software to edit the pictures you want to keep. What a difference in knowing just a very small amount about filters and lighting and my friends thought I had a professional take the photos I printed out on my Printer and framed. The Guide mode was the key to putting it all together for us, it taught us the basics of what we were looking for on the internet. So its all there in one package we love our new Camera.
Awesome camera for anyone!
Sturdy, feels good in the hand, has great auto and manual features. I have recommended it to family and friends.
Great camera for a beginner
great DSLR i;ve ever had. everything is excellent. i love my camera
The Nikon 3100 is an excellent camera.
The Nikon 3100 is an excellent camera. It would be even better if I had a better memory and could use it's features as intended.
Easy to use to take professional looking pictures.
This is a great investment for someone who is an avid photographer who wants to produce quality photographs. I'm impressed with its ability to capture the image in motion and from a distance. I added the 70-300 zoom lens and it is very easy to make lens changes on the camera. Setting the camera to "auto" enables you to produce great pictures without having to fuss with a lot of buttons that would otherwise make you miss the moment for the "great shot." I did a lot of research and looked at this camera several times before purchasing. Only regret is that I didn't buy it the first time I picked it up in the store!
Great camera for someone who is an amateur
My first experience with this camera was when my granddaughter was born. My daughter-in-law had gotten this camera for a present. I was the photographer in the delivery room and it is an amazing camera. Loved that I did not have to wait before clicking another picture. With my old camera it was click and wait before taking another shot, with my new Nikon, I feel like a professional photographer! Love, absolutely love my Nikon and would recommend and have recommended it to numerous people.
A Great Camera
This camera was bought because I saw it on Oprah. She said it was excellent and it is!!!
Awsome Camera!
Very easy to use, not to heavy and Nikon lives up to it's reputation.
Great Camera for the Price
I intend to use this camera 50% of the time for stills and 50% video. For this price range it's a very good camera, very nice build and easy to use. My main complaint is manual shutter control which this camera doesn't have. I bought the D90 18 months ago to use the HD video feature and was disappointed with the video qualtity (even though it's a great still camera). Some might wonder why a DSLR for video instead of a video camera? answer is the depth of field in DSLR is more film like and DSLR will have a bigger sensor than most pro video cameras. I compared the D7000 and D3100 for video features and for less than half the price you get similar quality as both use the same sensor with the exception for few features including shutter control. I decided to get the D3100 and it was a good choice. If you are a beginner the D3100 is a great camera, if you are looking for more features and a better lens you might want to look into the D7000 or canon T3 and 60D. As far as the video quality, Nikon has made a great improvement over the D90 with the higher resolution of 1080p and less jello/jitter effect. Keep in mind that I am rating this camera based on quality, features and price range.
This is a great camera!
I got this camera for Christmas and I love it! It performs really well in low light conditions. My other choice was the Canon T2I but I like this one better because of the photo quality and ease of use
Easy to use in different modes
Excellent features and quality. The price is competitive. Comparing with other brands, I like the lithium bateries instead of AAA.
Great entry level camera
If you have never used a DSLR camera before, this is probably the best camera for you as it is for me. Because of the excellent quality of this camera, I felt the need to buy a book for photography, and the result is stunning. Price is fair but you won't regret it, I obviously did not.
Outstanding value whether a beginner or semi pro
You can not go wrong with this camera at this price. Nikon has simplified taking quality pictures with a camera that has high end features. Beginner or semi pro can't go wrong with this one for the dollars. You won't believe your results. This may be the best value on the market in DSLR Camera? Enjoy! Oh, by the way, it works super with other Nikon lens, too.
Better than I imagined!
I had done more research for this purchase than I had previously done for any other product. After my research this camera seemed to be the best value for the money. The auto features work great and it's low light capability is the best I've seen. The camera is designed in a logical manor that makes it very easy to use. I expected the camera to be bulkier than it is. The camera is lightweight and it feels comfortable in my hands. Extremely happy with this purchase. All of my research paid off!
no problems yet
bought for the wife and she loves it had to get a better lens for zooming the one that comes with it isint for zooming
Great camera for someone curious about DSLR's
The ease of use of this camera is amazing. It has the scene modes I love, but the opportunity to shoot in full manual as well! So much more control than a point and shoot, and nice crisp, clear images!
Easy to use and great pictures
I used to have a regular 35mm file camera. This SLR digital camera is incredible. I did have to use the Nikon web sign to reteach myself on how to use. I also use YouTube to get some of the special instructions. The pictures are great and I have been able to use the camera in any situation. For the money I would buy it again.
Great camera for a beginner
I like it very much, easy to use and lots of features
LOVE THIS CAMERA
I am a beginner at the dslr cameras But this nikon d3100 is great. It was easy to learn how to use and took great 4th July pictures. The Nxt thing i wantto get is a lens that goes a little farther out. Boy I wished Iwould of just started with this instead of a regualr digital but I am happy now that I have bought it. Thanks nikon..
great camera for first time dslr
awesome pictures. great value. needs a better lens.
Awesome Camera for the beginner professional
I've recently gotten into to the hobby of photography and this camera is absolutly awesome. takes wonderful pics. i'm just saving now for a better zoom lens. the lens that comes with the camera is an upgraded one compared to the older cameras. but its the best camera i've ever owned and i look forward to having this camera for a long time, instead of constantly buying new smaller cameras
D3100 greater than D3000
I originally purchased the D3000 about a month ago. About a week later, I went ahead and exchanged it for the D3100...and I'm glad I did. Sure it's $100 more, but that $100 enables video, gigapixels, and functionality. The video shoots 1080p which is huge. It's also nice having the physical switch for the exposure modes. If you can afford it, start your photography with the D3100.
Great Entry Level DSLR
I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants to get into DSLR's. It's my first and it's been great. The picture quality is good enough that my fiancee and I were able to snap some pictures to use in wedding invitations. The Vibration Reduction lenses are also a nice addition!!! Thank you Nikon...you never stop impressing me!!!
Exceptional camera!
This camera is very user friendly. It takes beautiful vivid pictures and that's on the auto buttons. It has so many manual options as well. The camera is a very high quality camera for the money. It's great for both beginners and advanced photographers. The Nikon 55-200mm Vibration Reduction Zoom Lens for Nikon DX SLR is awesome! It lets you zoom in from a good distance great for sports, pictures of wildlife anything you can't get close to. The PNY 8GB Secure Digital High Capacity (SDHC) Memory Card holds more pictures than I can take. I bought two just in case I ran out of space. I have not used the other one yet. The Nikon Digital SLR Camera Bag is great. it holds my camera nice and snug. Everything fits in just right and it's made really nice and the quality is great , it also comes with an instructional DVD (very informative).
Great camera. Easy to learn how to use.
Excellent first dSLR. Very user friendly and easy to use. Takes great pictures even in non-ideal conditions.
Awesome Camera
This is my first, Digital SLR camera, and I have to say it is awesome. The picture quality is fantastic, and the video quality amazing. My two complaints with this camera are, the 50mm lens that comes with the camera is not a very high zoom, definately should purchase with a 200MM lens package, and the auto focus on the camera during video mode is VERY loud and will get picked up by the camera's mic. I switch it to manual focus and use it in that mode when filming. Other than that the price for the camera is definately justified by the quality of the output.
Love this camera
I bought this as an upgrade from a D40 and love it. Lots more features, pictures are sharper, easy to use.
I LOVE this camera
I wanted a camera for sports and other action photos of our family. It is so easy to use and for a beginner - it is GREAT!!
Excellent camera
The best part is the lens that comes with it! The camera works great overall!
Nice Camera
I would not suggest purchashing this camera online. If I would have ordered online I would have probably been a little disappointed. Upon speaking to a customer service rep on the website, I thought this lens would be enough for what I needed, after being at the store and talking and actually playing with the camera I found that I needed a different type of lens. So please my suggestion would be to go into a store and talk to an associate. If in Granville WV I spoke with Dustin and he was AWESOME very helpful and took the time to answer all my questions. Kind of disappointed that you do not get an instructional video unless you buy a 70.00 camera bag. Paying that much for a camera you should get that included.
Not for amatures like me..
Don't get me wrong, I'm sure it probably isn't the cameras fault. This is my first slr camera, I'm used to point and shoot with good zoom lenses. I bought my camera last week with the 18-55 lens after reading all the great reviews. I try to take a shot across a small room and can't zoom close enough to really see the subject of the shot. I took it to Disneyland and couldn't get any good shots. So I decide to spend $200.00 more to purchase a 55-200 lens but the reviews say you can't use them indoors. I'm confused, on an slr do you need to change lenses with every shot ? I keep experimenting with the settings but miss many shots that I could have gotten with my old point and shoot. Should I spend $200.00 on another lens or a new point and shoot camera ?
Interesting
This is not only a great camera, but also a wonderful learning experience for anyone who is even remotely interested in photography. Before buying this camera, i had no idea what aperture or shutter speed did to a photograph but this camera forces you to learn. It takes wonderful pictures! I've only had it for 2 days and i can't stop experimenting and taking pictures!
LOVE IT!
I have been a camera owner now for about 7 years (keep in mind I am only 22) and I've had 2 regular digital cameras prior to this one (1 Nikon, 1 Canon). My parents recently bought me this camera as a graduation present and I LOVE it! I just graduated college and I've taken up photography as a hobby! This a wonderful camera if you aren't going into photography as a career, but want an upgrade from the regular digital camera. This camera has AMAZING battery life, outstanding photo quality and it is very easy to use! This camera was not purchased through Best Buy but I got the same package deal offered here and the entire package is wonderful. I would highly recommend this camera if you are interested in exploring different areas of photography and just want amazing photos!
Impressive
I have had this camera for about 5 months. It is an awesome camera, and I am very impressed with it. I'm not an expert, but I've come to take some great pictures with it. I like the way it looks and feels. Some of the features I have found useless but that is just because I like doing things the hard way. I always keep it on manual settings, because I want to be able to control everything. And it lets you do that. I'm starting to grow out of it, but that is okay, because I don't think I need more than it does. It's a great beginner DSLR, and if you are someone who wants to learn a little about the camera and take good pictures but are not looking to be a professional photographer this is a great camera for you. The video is extremely awesome. Just learn to use manual focus because a) it doesn't focus well using auto-focus and b) when you use auto-focus you can hear it really loud in the background of your video. My only complaint is that there is no external microphone jack. But that's alright. It's not a video camera. Great camera, great quality. :)
Nikon D3100
I bought the Camera for Christmas. My previous cameras have been Point & shoot. The Nikon D3100 takes great pictures and has many features that I hope to learn in the months/years to come. Though I am bugged that it does not have exposure bracketing, I have seen that by saving Raw+JPEGs I have been able to adjust exposure on the computer. The autofocus in movie mode leaves a lot to be desired.
Great camera for anyone!
The pictures from this camera are amazing! I love it!
Incredible value
I was a serious semi-photographer back in the late 80's and 90's and owned a photo lab/ picture framing shop for 6 of those years. At one point my bag full of Nikons weighed in at 27 pounds: Nikon FM2 with MD-12 motor drive Nikon F90 20mm f2.8 35mm f2.0 85mm f2.0 24-120 mm f4-5.6 AF 180mm f2.8 AF 300mm f4.5 SB-24 Flash In the mid 2000's I sold off everything (1) without my own lab processing was too expensive and I had no personal control over the outcome of my prints (2) is was becoming clear that Digital SLR's were the future and I wanted to get some money out of my film cameras while they still held some value. My plan was to wait until DSLR, especially full-frame models, reached the right price point. While the D3100 is not full frame, I have to admit that I was a camera snob and I got over it. The D3100 and the quality of the 18-55mm lens simply blows me away. While not suitable for hardcore photo journalism (I don't think the body and the plastic lens mount could take a fraction of the abuse of my old FM) the metering, low shutter lag, lens sharpness and VR function of the lens are excellent. I have been surprised how quickly my desire for a whole brace of single focal length lenses has abated. I still remember the days when (1) zoom lenses just weren't that sharp and the ones that were, were expensive (i.e. Nikkor 24-120mm) (2) cheap zoom lens' and their painfully slow f4-5.6 apertures just didn't cut it; this has all changed. Between the (1) improvements in CCD low light sensitivities (2) variable ISO (3) ED glass and lens design (4) VR-vibration reduction has all but made the single focal length lens obsolete, that is with the exception of depth of field. Honestly I'm a little depressed; Nikon has made it difficult to be a "gear snob" an 18-55mm and 55-200mm, a flash and perhaps one mid length telephoto with a fast aperture for shallow depth of field portraits would cover nearly anything that might come up. This is simply a great camera and is perfect for home or most business uses, where it won't be physically abused.
Great camera for first time SLR user
Very easy to use with many features that will help you take the next steps to better pictures. After a few shots with the guide mode, I'm already starting to master the manual settings and getting the pictures I wish I had when I had a point and shoot. I highly recommend this camera to those who are new to digital photography as well as seasoned veterans.
Nice Camera for use in everything
I only had one problem with this camera. There is no USB cable that comes with the camera, although it come with the software to download onto your computer. the packaging doesn't state exactly that it DOES come with a USB cable, but it does tell you were the USB cable is manufactured (Taiwan). By doing so, it gives the impression it would come with (or why else tell the consumer where it's made???). I did call Best Buy to ask about it and go nowhere with the problem. Actually I was basicly called a liar when the "gentleman" on the other end of the line said "there is nowhere on the box that it states where it's made"!! Other then that issue, the camera is great!! Works well, isn't too difficult to figure out and has all the features I was looking for in a camera!!
Not much else to say but...
It's just an awesome camera. I love it. I love taking pictures of my daughter...especially close-ups and it's perfect. I haven't played with the video feature much yet, but I guess I could try that out more soon.
Outstanding entry DSLR
After owning several Nikon cameras and after a fair amount of research I decided on this for my first DSLR. Purchased the camera a week before a trip to Europe and returned home with many, many great pictures. The Auto modes let you start immediately, while the manual modes allow for more customization for advanced photographers. Great camera for the price!
Good Camera
Meets my needs for good quality pics.I am an amatuer photogrpaher and meets my needs.
Nikon D3100 Rocks
I am an avid photographer and have had several cameras and this was my first DSLR camera , i did some research on the internet and this camera came up as the best for the price, it was easy to set up and was taking pics right away. I would definately reccomend this camera for a first time buyer of a DSLR camera. Its a little bit of a learning curve to get familiar with all the settings but not impossible, Nikon tech support was very helpful on a couple of issues.
Great camera until . . .
I bought my D3100 after months of research May 7th 2011. I was so excited and used it for a few days and then put it away. A few months later I took it out to use it and apparently the shutter door was stuck (I have now learned this is common with Nikon's). I called Nikon and they told me to send it in. I packed it up took it to the shipping place and paid extra for them to pack it up again and ship it. And then I waited. I finally heard from Nikon telling me the camera had hard impact damage and therefore would not be covered under warranty. Of course I called them and said they must be mistaken, my camera did not have an impact. They then told me my camera case was cracked. I was livid! When I sent my camera to them it was NOT cracked. I argued with them for a month over it and finally filed a claim with the shipping company. And waited. The next month the shipping company told me Nikon refused to turn the camera over to them because I had not approved service. Not that it should matter if I approved service or not because obviously I called the shipping company BUT I had in fact approved for it to be fixed and luckily had email proof. However the shipping company backed out and refused my claim. So I went after Nikon again. I FINALLY got approval for a "complementary" service where they were going to fix it for me. And then I waited. So here I am now, almost three months later since the camera was delivered to Nikon, one month later since the "complementary" approval and I still have not received my camera. It has been showing "parts hold" for the past month. Sooo the first five months that I had my camera I used it maybe three or four times and Nikon has had it ever since. And I still wait. Since buying my camera I have learned that shutter's are an issue with Nikon's and Nikon's warranty service is known for refusing warranty work due to "hard impact damage". AND I STILL WAIT.
Amazing camera for price
I am really impressed with the camera. I had a D70 camera before and really feel like this camera matches it. The camera is amazingly light, and the video quality is much better than I expected for a camera. I didn't buy it for the video, but find myself using it because it is so good. The focus during recording of video will produce a little whining noise, but there is nothing they could have done to prevent it.
Excelent camera
I'm not an expert but I can tell you this is a great and easy to use camera. Using their diferent options you can take amazing pictures.
Nice Camera for a NEWBIE
I have already taken some incrediable shoots of my family with this camera. And I am glad that Best Buy will let me trade up now too.
Extremely awesome must have
I purchased this camera for my business in digital media and i believe it was the best choice I have ever made. The features on here are extremely easy to use even for beginner photographers. The Image quality is unbelievable and cannot be any clearer. There is one thing that i must mention that is a tiny disapointment but not a real big deal. When i got this i have been using the D5000. And on the 5000 the capture rate is etremely fast. And what i was expecting from this camera was an increase on the capture rate. But unfortunately its a tad bit slower. If you are aiming for very fast capture rate and maintain the highest quality you might be interested in the D5000. But this camera still capture awesome action shots. Its really a matter of skill. The other feature that I am very impressed with is the option to not only capture images as RAW but you can set it to capture RAW and JPEG at the exact same time and doing so there has been no lag in the capture rate. Just make sure you have a high performance SD card. In the end this camera is a must for all photographers. It is very reasonably priced for the hardware that you get.
Love my new camera!
I'm still figuring out my camera, but it has been an enjoyable experience. I was debating between Canon and Nikon for a while and I'm glad I chose the Nikon. I recently went to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago, a challenging place to take pictures for sure! I had a great time and got some shots that would have been impossible on my little point-and-shoot camera. The auto mode is great for taking pictures immediately and the help guide is great for figuring out the manual features as you gain experience and confidence. I love learning how to use my new camera.
Great Camera
I'm very happy with my purchase. I never own a nikon camera before very easy to follow the guide. I bought this camera for when I go see my boy play basketball I could take great pictures. The camera that I still have Sony would not take a good picture while moving. So far this camera has not disappointed me at all. Great investment on a camera that will last for many years ahead.
Great camera for a beginner
I'm a big fan of Nikon. I have many Nikon digital cameras, but D3100 is my first SLR camera. I'll have my first baby, so I bought this camera to take portrait for her. The price is reasonable, and the function is enough for me. Photograph is not a easy thing, I want to use this camera to practice my photograph skill.
Love love love it!
Awesome camera. Great for beginner. Easy to use features.
Wonderful camera for your first DSLR camera
Reviewed many DSLR camera's before purchasing this camera. Have had no issues at all. First time I used it, our grandson's school asked for any pictures I had taken of their christmas program at the church. They were good enought so that they were able to use them on their web site. That must tell you of the ease of use for the camera, using it for the first time. I can't wait to take even more pictures.
great entry SLR
This is a great entry level DSLR ,I have it now for 2 months ,I owned canonXSI before, the picture quality is great, low light performance is excellent. And I was pleasantly surprised with the quality of the kit lens. It also autofocus in video, and shoots full HD,though the autofocus in video could be slow in fast moving subjects like my son (Canon T2i,T3i has manual focus only). But this isn't a camcorder, it is good for short clips and record up to 10 minutes at a time. The limitation are : the LCD is 230k pixel compared to over one milliion in canon T2I,T3I.but you save money with the 3100 which you can use for lenses, and Nikon has great package discounts, also burst mode is on the slow side of 3 fps which is acceptable unless you use it for fast action sports then you may need more advanced DSLR.(T2i has 3.7 fps). Also you can edit your pictures without using your computer, the guide mode is great if you haven't used DSLR before.
wow
This camera is amazing. Starting a new family and wanted a really great camera but wasn't sure if I would be able to use something this fancy. Turns out the dvd that comes along with it teaches you how to use all the features on in an elementary style. I already feel really good about it and it just gets easier to experiment with it every time.
Great camera for a beginner
This camera is awesome! You can start taking great pictures with it as soon as you get it out of the box. But, I have continued to learn new features about it everyday!! Highly recommend this camera to everyone.
Awesome camera, absolutly love it!!!
I bought the package deal w/ bag, extra lens, and memory card from the local Best Buy. This camera is absolutly amazing, I recommend to anyone looking to get into the DSLR's. I am just starting out and there is alot to learn about this camera. I just got it on 04/04/2011 and I have taken nearly 1000 pics, I cannot put it down! I love it!!
Great for Beginners
This DSLR is made for those who havent used a DSLR camera before, it features an amazing 14.2Mp and records 1080p videos, however, the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens that comes along with the camera is not that good, I would highly recommend potential buyers to research before buying for example if are planning to take photos of landscapes you would defiantly need a wide-angle/zoom lens such as the 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6G lens or the 16-35mm f/4G lens. But if you are planning on taking portrait photos you would then need a 50mm f/1.4G lens or a Nikon 35mm f/1.8G lens. yes some of the lenses that I've mentioned are bit pricey, but you'll need to understand that If you have a low quality lens you will get low quality pictures and for sure you don't want that. If you are planning to get into photography and to be a pro I would recommend going with my suggestions since those lenses can be used with the other Nikon DSLR's. people who dont understand the numbers on the lenses should read this: Lets take the 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6 lens as an example here: The 18-55mm is the focal length of the lens: with a small focal length you'll have to be closer to the object that you're planning to take a photo of, and with a long focal length you'll have to be farther. The f/3.5-5.6 is the Aperture size: the smaller aperture number means a wider Aperture thus will allow more light into the lens. The larger aperture number means a narrower aperture which means that is will allow less light into the lens. For example: if you are trying to shoot a photo in a dim place you want to use a lens with a small aperture to use as much light as you can to make the picture visible. but if you used a lens with a large aperture you will end up with a dark unclear photo.
Excellent camera! Love the quality, design.
This camera is a replacement for an old point & shoot digital. While the SLR camera's are much more expensive than typical p & s camera's, it's very easy to see why. The answer is quality. I'm not just talking the quality of the camera, which is by far much better, by the way. I'm talking quality of the pictures. I was amazed at some of the pics I was able to take with this camera. I am a beginner and never have really enjoyed taking photos. I now find myself taking more and more. The reason? I'm actually getting great photos from my camera. Before it was nearly impossible to get clear photos of my kids without it being blurry. Now I get crystal clear pictures. The only negative I could really come up with is the bulkiness compared to point and shoot. This camera is heavier, bigger than a typical point and shoot, but then again why go with a light weight, small camera that doesn't get the job done? What's the point? Yes this is a bulkier option, but the rewards will be worth it in the end. This is my first Nikon, my first SLR camera. I have had it just a few days, but can tell it will be a valued part of our family for a long time. I look forward to learning more about photography and the various features of this camera. Hope this helps!
Glorified point and shoot
This was my first digital SLR camera. I shopped around a lot and a lot of the technical jargon and talk about the cameras I didn't understand till after I owned a DSLR and could see what was being talked about. This is a good camera, I really loved it while I had it but I was kind of upset when I found out that a lot of lenses wouldn't work on my camera. Nobody mentioned that a lot of the popular lenses such as the basic 50mm prime lens wouldn't auto focus on the d3100. Which is why I chose to upgrade to a something a little better. Don't get me wrong, it is a great entry level camera but that is where it stops, if you are looking at doing anything more than taking pictures of the family or a camera to take on vacation, this is not the camera for you. Save up and get the Nikon D90 or the canon 60D. If you do want a glorified point and shoot that changes lenses than this is where you should look. Most people I've talked to don't even know how to run the manual mode, and that is fine and dandy cause this takes really amazing picturesin the standard auto modes. The other down side is it is kind of small to the hand in my opinion. I am in no way a big guy, at 5'9" and 175lbs but my half my hand hung off my camera taking pictures. Ok that might be a slight exaggeration but it doesn't fit very well. All in all I still think this is a pretty good camera but there isn't a lot of room for growth with it, I just wish somebody would have told me that before I bought it.
Awesome camera!
I got the Nikon 3100 and what an amazing camera it is. I am able to shoot in extremely dark settings and it comes out bright and not nearly as grainy as I thought it would be. When you're outside, the camera is perfect...lightweight, easy to use and everything ends up in focus. The zoom lens is very responsive and is quick to focus. The camera has enough features for advanced users and is easy enough for beginners to shoot and get the photos they are looking for. There even is a video mode on the camera and it looks like it shoots clear HD videos, although I can't say for sure because I have yet to use that feature. Great camera and worth every penny.
Excellent Camera
The "dummy guide" makes for easy use. Takes beautiful, crisp pictures. Highly recommended.
Fantastic upgrade from a point and shoot
I was amazed how much better the pictures are with this camera. I had been using a variety of point and shoot simple cameras and was disappointed with the quality of the shots I was getting. Even in auto mode this camera is so much better than anything I'd been able to get before. With about an hour of reading through the manual I was able to use some of the more advanced functions of the camera and WOW what a difference. The pictures are crisp, colors really pop and the additional pixel density mean I can edit/crop and still retain a great shot. Also the focus depth makes a huge difference in really making the subject of your photos pop. The video function on this camera is basic but for the price paid it's a fantastic camera with more functions and room to grow than I, a beginner, will likely need for the forseeable future. I highly recommend this as an upgrade to the full auto point and shoot cameras. You won't be disappointed.
Excellent camera easy to use.
This is my first SLR camera and I am really enjoying it. Easy to use.
Great camera. Highly recommend for DSLR beginners.
My 1st SLR camera in 25 years. Enjoying all the different choices I have for making creative pictures.
Would recommend this for all photographers
I purchased this camera about a week before we left for a vacation in Florida. The results of my pictures were fabulous. The inside as well as the outside pictures gave true vivid colors. I had a cannon rebel prior to this camera and the Nikon by far surpasses the picture quality of the cannon.
Great camera
Am an amatuer taking pictures. But this camera is easy to operate and takes great pictures. Have still got a lot to learn but this camera should be with me a long time
Awesome Starter
I love this camera, you will notice a very big difference in quality from a point a shoot.
Great Entery Level SLR Camera
Was able to take great pictures within moments of unboxing the Camera.
Nice package, everything expected from a Nikon.
This camera had the features and functions that I need and expect from a consumer grade DSLR camera. The controls are easy to use and straight forward, with very little that is not intuitive if you have used a Nikon camera before. I like to silent shutter option as this camera is used in performance spaces occasionally. The lens are Nikon so they are as expected, the highest quality. The battery like is very good, and the form factor is well balanced with both lens that come with this outfit. The built in flash is as expected. Good at close range. If you need to photograph with a flash at distance you will want to get an additional flash unit, but that is normal. Overall I recommend this camera for novice to semi-pro. It could even be used by a Pro as a good backup camera.
Make you Cry!
Never since I gave up my Nikon FG have I had a camera take what I would consider Great pictures. I took a pic of my granddaughter last week in a close up mode from her side. I could see the individual lashes on her eyes. I could see the little fine hairs between her eyebrows. You know the little blond peach fuzz that children have. I almost cried. Seriously. And there must be an auto white balance in this camera so you can take indoor pics with depth and clarity without the flash. I love the pop up flash. I love the eye piece. I just plain love this camera. There is very little fixing to the pics cause they turn out so great each time. I know this cost more than a point and shoot but to me, my family pictures are irreplaceable and precious. You won't be sorry. Lithium battery lasts along time. Uses regular SD cards. Well thought out as far as I'm concerned.
love it!
Loveee this camera! Just got it a few weeks ago and can't stop playing with it. Finally decided to upgrade to a nice camera from a regular digital and I'm not sure I want to go back to my regular digital camera, unless I need something small to carry around. The camera is easy to use and takes awesome pics!
Couldn't ask for more in an entry level SLR
I looked at SLR's for quite awhile before making the purchase of my D3100. My friends have owned various models of both the Canon and Nikon brands. They are incredibly loyal to the brand they own and curse the competitors. Keeping an open mind, I looked at both, my main constraint being budget: I wanted a decent entry level SLR with a couple of lenses for under $1,000. I wasn't terribly concerned with brand and narrowed the choices between the Nikon D3100 and the canon T2i. Both had a decent feature set and a resolution for getting started in photography. What sold me on the D3100 was the ease of use (changing aperture, speed, ISO), relatively good pictures in auto scene modes, and the price (camera, 18-55mm, and 55-300mm lens under $1000). I won't knock the Canon. They make a great product, but I'd happily recommend the Nikon D3100 anyone.
Love the Camera
I took the camera on a trip to Monterey soon after purchasing it. I took 1800 pictures while there and they turned out perfect. Great camera.
A great DSLR for the beginner or experienced user.
I've used Nikon cameras since 1969. The D3100 is my first DSLR. I found it easy to use, light weight and with many, many features built right into the firmware. I can use it on full automatic for snap shots or I can control shutter speed and/or aperture. The standard 18mm - 55mm zoom Nikor lens provides sharp, crisp images. I bought this camera because I wanted to experiment with HDR photography. I'm doing this with success but, on the D3100 you must manually change the EV (over-exposure/under-exposure). I've since learned that more expensive Nikons have an auto-bracket feature. I can only hope that Nikon will offer a firmware update that includes this feature ...someday.
Happy with the Kit
I bought what I could afford. Five years ago, I might have bought much more but I am retired on a low fixed income. Ii I had another two or three hundred dollars to spend on the next camera up the line, i would have but I am delighted with what i bought. The camera itself is full of terrific features. It takes time to lean to use them I am still learning. The kit lenses are wonders. They are plastic which made them cheaper to produce and buy, but they are excellent lenses. Their lightness and versatility astounds me. The lenses are inexpensive and I could replace them in the future. Old Nikon lenses work but without some of the features. I received my shipment quickly. I highly recommend this camera and Best Buy service. I prefer buying online to in the the store though I live near a store. The camera did not include a memory card or a card reader which was not really a problem at all.
Great Entry Level Camera
We were looking for a great SLR camera for beginners. This camera has been easy to use and fun to experiment with. We have taken some beautiful pictures that look professional looking in the short time we have owned the camera. I can not wait to actually learn all the different features the camera offers!
Great Camera at a great price
I was planning to buy the Nikon D90. Thanks to an Ad i noticed that Nikon was coming out with a new SLR camera wich included video recording. Im a beginner and im really happy with this camera. The price was one of the reaseon why i purchased the camera.
Nikon D3100 VS. D300 VS. D700
For the cost of this camera, I don't think you can get anything better. The low light performance is off the charts. As a wedding photographer I regularly shoot with Nikon's high end professional equipment and I was amazed how close this camera is to a pro camera. Now let me get specific. In order to compare I took a look at 100% files out of each camera I own. Which camera excels Nikon D3100($Cheap) VS. D300($1600) VS. D700 ($2,700): * Lens = The D3100 is the only camera that comes with a lens at it's normal price * ISO Performance = Tie between D3100 and D700! (It could be Nikon's new processing but the JPEG looks fantastic I was shooting D3100 on 6400iso with very little noise at all) * Low Light Focusing = D700 * Focus Speed = D700 * External Buttons & Controls for Pros = D700 * Menu Navigation = D3100 * Ease of Use = D3100 * Megapixel = D3100 (14.2) * Sensor size = D700 (Much more important than megapixels but I won't get into this) * Can use older lenses with functionality = D700 & D300 * Video = D3100 of course! 1080P video looks amazing. * Frame Rate = D300 at 6 photos a second * Weight = D3100 (light as a feather) * Ergonomics = D700 (big enough for all my finger) Lens: The lens is a kit lens, it will work outside but not so great in low light. The Vibration Reduction will help indoors but Vibration Reduction can't stop a child or pet in motion indoors. Consider buying a 35mm 1.8dx AFS for around $200 and you will be super happy with this camera. Video: I purchased the 3100 specifically to shoot video, so I put on Nikon's brand new 85mm 1.4g Nano lens and shot video with it. The lens costs more than double the camera but I wanted to see how the 1080P video looked. It has the look of a cinematic movie. After the 85mm, I put on Nikon's 50 1.2 manual focus lens and was able to take very cinematic video in manual mode. In order to make it brighter or darker you either need to use a really old lens like the 50mm 1.2 and hit the AE-L (auto exposure lock) and twist the aperture to change exposure. Or you can hit the AE-L button when you get the exposure you like. Its not a perfect system but it works well for me. Inside the menu options you can change the AE-L button to hold the setting until you reset which is helpful. Jello Cam (What's not so great): This camera still suffers from the "Jello Cam" look in video if it is not on a tripod and you are shaky. The video can look like jello if moved too quickly. Use a monopod or tripod when shooting to avoid this. I'm not sure if a faster video frame rate 60fps would help - but at 24 and 30 it can suffer badly. Conclusion: This is an amazing deal! Unless you make most of your income from photography or have a stockpile of old lenses (this camera can only autofocus with AFS lenses) then this camera is the must have camera of the year. If you have good composition skills and an eye for light you can take photos worthy of a magazine with this. Seriously, you won't regret buying this camera. When you do, do yourself a favor and buy an additional Nikon AFS lens that has a maximum aperture of 2.8, 1.8 or 1.4. These lenses will take better portraits and deal better in low light than the kit lens.
Best Entry Level DSLR.
You really can't go wrong if this is your first DSLR. The picture quality is amazing, the 1080p video is crisp, and the features are all there. I replaced an aging (but still very much working) D40. I could have gone to one of the higher-end models, but things like bracketing and custom white balance control just aren't that important to me. I don't regret it one bit. It's a stellar camera, and I would recommended it in an instant to anyone looking to get into DSLRs. One gripe comes in the way of the screen. It's a half inch larger than the D40's (3" vs 2.5") but the same resolution. It's not unusable, but the pixels are definitely noticeable.
Awesome camera!
Can't figure out why this bundle was half the price of the Canon EOS 60D. Also cheaper than the T2i. In my opinion, this camera is just as good, and half the price! One review I saw that this camera, with the stock lens takes better pics than the Canon anyways. I definitely am not dealing with buyers remorse. This camera is GREAT. Although it is "entry level", there is a HUGE difference from my point and shoots (Powershot S70 and Coolpix 70).
Love my Nikon!
This is my first DSLR camera, and I believe that it's worth it every cent. While I didn't pay for it, I got it about a month after it came out, when it was $800. If I had the opportunity to buy a different DSLR camera, I wouldn't. The menu is easy to use: it can even give you preprogrammed options if you're not sure what you need to take the pictures you want. That being said, it also give tons of customisable options, that make it great for both new-to-DSLR photographers and more experienced photographers. I don't know how great it'd be as a professional camera, but I think the image quality is phenomenal. It has a lot of in-camera editing options, if that's how you prefer to edit photos. It's super quiet, too. I use my D3100 for everything. I'm a senior editor of my school's yearbook, so I use it for sport shots and events at school; I use it for birthday parties for my friends; I take a lot of macro shots in my photography; I use it to videotape events sometimes... It's handy for anything. Love the VR ((vibration reduction)) feature on the Nikon lenses. The 18-55mm lens comes with the camera, that's considered a standard lens. I also have a 55-200mm lens I love to death. I use the 55-200mm lens for sports like soccer, basketball, and tennis for its wide zoom. Even zoomed all the way in, it still takes great photos. I also use this lens for my nature shots. It's the product listed as a suggestion. I'd recommend this camera to anyone who's ready for more than a point-and-shoot, but not sure what's next. It's totally worth it.
Great product
Its a great product which provides excelent pictures and very quick
outstanding camera!
Upgraded fron D40. I am completely sold on nikon in general, and this camera in particular. I have a somewhat advanced skill level with DSLRs, and I have been blown away by this camera. Gave it to my warehouse manager, who knows next to nothing about photography, and by using Guide Mode, he was shooting great pics in just a few minutes. So far, I am completely satisfied. Attached photo was taken at 75 MPH while going over Tenn. River bridge on I-65 N, using landscape setting & included kit lens.
Awesome camera
This is my first DSLR camera. I was strictly a point and shoot person. I've had the camera for almost two months now and have found the learning curve between this camera and a point & shoot is a bit overwhelming. However, with some help, I have begun to close the gap. I can't believe the photos it takes. When I purchased this camera, it came with a great bundle of two lens and a case and an awesome price. Please note, I strongly suggest you buy a comparable SD card with good memory (I bought a SanDisk Extreme III 8GB Secure Digital (SD) Media Card, Class 10) especially if you plan on using the camera for shooting video. The camera (unless you manage to get one in a bundle deal) does not include an SD card and you will definitely need one. Make sure you get nothing less than a Class 6 card. I got mine for around $50 at Best Buy. Since then, I've added a Nikon Circular Polarizing Lens. Unfortunately, Best Buy did not have this in stock. However, our shopping experience was outstanding. The store's Online/Onsite representative was very helpful getting us the camera and a store salesman to show us SD cards. I love the camera. I wish I would have had it on our trip to Pigeon Forge and Gatlinburg, TN last fall. I truly think if you're a beginner to DLSR cameras, this is your camera. Though I have only shot a few short videos of our dogs. The video quality is great. One other note, that people normally ask is "how is the battery life?" I have had no problem. The battery when fully charged has let me taken over 600 shots.

Great camera
I've only had this a few weeks and I'm still learning all the bells and whistles. So far I have no complaints at all. It takes magnificant pictures.
This is a great camera for beginners.
I have not expected that the Nikon camera delivers what it promised.
Love the camera for family pictures
We bought this camera since we had stopped taking pictures of our kids with the 2 point and click cameras we had due to never being able to get a good picture. We LOVE the SLR camera and the 55-200 lens combination. We have taken over 1000 pictures in the first 4 weeks. We have gotten some of the BEST pictures of our kids ever. We bought the combo pack with bag, 55-200 lens, SD card (I bought a 4gb HIGH speed Card in addition) While we have only used the auto function, the camera is easy to use for novices.
Great step up from my point and shoot
I really love this camera. All I have ever owned in the past were point and shoots and this DSLR is great. Although I still have lots to learn, I am enjoying playing with all the different manual settings. When it is not convenient for me to adjust the manual settings, I use the Auto feature.
It was my first D-SLR camera i was so amaze !!!!
Before i buy my first D-SLR ,Nikon 3100 i review some of customers ratings i though it was only a product advertising so i read all about features of this camera it almost one week now since memorial day sale weekend so i decided to buy this camera, i was so amaze and easy to use just only read the instructions first and you will enjoy ,so i gave my nikon coolfix 7.1 to my kids ..great camera!
Awesome price-quality ratio
Awesome product from Nikon for any photography lover and beginner in terms of professional photography! You won't regreat choosing this product.
Loving it
This is my first SLR camera. I LOVE it! Easy to use. Great pictures. I have been taking pictures on the Sports setting and continuous shots. Great mid air pictures of my dog catching the frisbee. The video camera is awesome! Go ahead and get an extra battery and a 55-300 lens for awesome shots even far away. Worth every penny.
Nikon D3100
This is a good camera for anyone entering the DSLR market or advanced shooter that wishes to have a lighter camera as a back-up. The options are plentiful for any beginner along with advanced photographer. I previously used a D60 and D40. Upgrading from the D60 added a few more features that make this camera well worth purchasing. Of all the features mainly the 11 point autofocus, upgraded Expeed II image processor and 14.2 Megapixel format strike me as the most important upgrades. The new image processor allows you to capture videos (in HD quality) while allowing the lense to constantly focus on the subject. Face recognition is great with this feature as well. However, I personally bought this camera to take stills and not movies so the option was mute to me when being pitched by a sales associate. If you are unsure about a DSLR this is one that you should seriously consider. The price is right for the options you get in such a highly competitive field that DSLRs are in.
very cost effective
shoots fast, battery lasts long, no need to turn on the camera and wait a long time for the 1st shot. flash can be turned off fast. Very little "red eye" effect. excelent buy.
Best DSLR for starters
This is best DSLR for starters. Best Buy price was low the time I purchased the cmaera with other competitors. Camera is very handy, picture quality is superb. Nikon is the best
Amazing!
This camera is incredible. It has all the features for an advanced photographer but the most amateur user has an easy time with it. The guide feature is great for just about anything. The picture quality is beautiful. The option for RAW+Fine jpg if really nice. I would recommend this camera for anyone.
Great camera for a beginner
This camera has all features you'll need for shooting manual pictures with excellent quality!!
AMAZING!!
I finally got my D3100 today! The store only had 2 in stock, and didnt even know it was released yet! I had to explain to the sales person that it was available online, after talking to the manager I got the ok!!! The photo quality is amazing! It is easy to use, and great for a beginner photographer. I think the price was great for the quality!!!
Great camera to grow into for novices
Bought this camera after our point and shoot camera (7 years old) was too slow to capture our new born baby's quickly changing expressions. The nice and knowledgeable expert in the camera dept (thanks Ashley!) calmed my fears of not being able to understand all the DSLR features. She showed me the Guide option on the display that asks you basic questions about the conditions you are in for taking pictures. When I saw "Sleeping Faces" was a setting, I was sold. The Guide feature and the rest of the digital menu on the display also seems like I should be able to figure more of the camera's capability out on my own over time. Most important - it takes great pictures/ very high quality for a new Dad looking to impress the Family with great close ups of the little one. Extra bonus - It takes great HD Video. Perfect for those 30 second snippets. 8GB memory card (tagged here) has 400 pictures and four 30 second videos on it so far and is not even half full.
Excellent camera for a first time DSLR user.
This camera is easy to use and takes awesome pictures. It has many features like the high price professional cameras.
Great camera for advanced amateur
Really like the camera, takes pictures much quicker than my previous ones (minimal delay between clicking the shutter button and the picture being taken). The only feature it does not have that makes me wish I'd have purchased the next model up is that it cannot take bracketed exposure photos automatically.
good camera for beginner who wants to grow
I purchased this same camera about a year ago for personal use. I love the many features that allow for growth. We decided to purchase the same camera for my retired parents because we knew it would be simple enough for them to learn yet challenging for advancement.
Great camera for beginner to professional
Great great and a great price. Easy to use, just point and shoot. Auto or manual provide awesome pictures. Many settings for a professional picture or the beginner can leave it on auto for ease of use until they get used to the options. Highly recommend this camera.
Fantastic DSLR for the price!
This is our first DSLR - we've used SLR cameras years ago - and went with point and shoot models in recent years - but nothing gives you the control like using the DSLR camera. Fantastic imaging, very fast, crisp, clear photos. We're using the EyeFi 4GB X2 card with this camera and never have to pull the memory card because it auto-uploads to our laptop. Simply Fantastic!
Love it!
I have been waiting for this camera for almost a year and finally got it as a gift. Could not be happier! This is my first Digital SLR Camera, but my brother had one and I thought the pictures were phenomenal so I wanted my own. So far, I have not been disappointed. Right now I am still just using all the basics, but reading up to learn more and more. That's what I love about the camera - its so easy to use as a point and click right away, but as I get more experience and knowledge I can do so much more! I absolutely love it so far! If you are looking at cameras and are newer to this but love taking pictures, its great! I am planning to also invest in a stronger zoom lens too though, because I still can't get as close-up as I'd like for when my sons are playing sports.
Great Camera!
Awesome camera! I am so happy with this purchase. My pics always come out clear. And all my action shots are perfect. Couldn't ask for a better camera. Can't wait to get my new zoom lense. This will make the camera perfect.
Really liked it!!
this camera is awesome!! The only thing I think is that it should come with the usb cable to transfer the pictures to the computer..
Very Happy
I have had this camera for about a month and I am really happy with it so far. I got the kit lens as well as the 55-200 zoom lens and both take great photos. I know my way around a SLR and enjoy taking photos but am not a serious photographer. This camera fits my needs perfectly. Just enough tools to add some control but no more than I need at my current skill level. I had a Canon Digital Rebel XT before this camera and was never very happy with it - even invested in a better-than-kit lens and never felt that the pictures were good. The photos were never sharp enough and the colors were dull. The Nikon has produced really vivid, sharp photos with just the kit lens. My husband has always been more of a Nikon fan than a Canon one and I'm glad he talked me into switching - this is a great purchase. My only quibble is that some of the more advanced controls could be more intuitive but this is mostly because I'm used to using a Canon.
Good first DSLR
This camera would be perfect for a first DSLR for a beginner. The button placements around the camera were designed great. You can easily adjust your aperture, iso speed, and shutter speed without having to search for the button to do it with. This camera is also great for anyone who wants a smaller DSLR without giving up picture quality. This camera is a little bit smaller than most DSLRs so that also means that it is lighter. Overall, the d3100 is great except for a couple of things: 1) Video quality is not as good as I hoped 2) You cannot use an external mic for video. This camera will not be a good buy for you if you want to use the video feature often. Other than that, this camera is pretty great. The picture quality is amazing. It's simple to learn how to use. It's lightweight and the battery lasts a while.
Awesome Camera & Advise for 1st time buyers...
I'm enjoying this camera, very much! I've always had point and shoot cameras. I feel very comfortable using the Auto feature to take pictures and then switch to manual occasionally when I have more time to mess around with all the features. This camera was recommneded by a professional for me, as a beginner, and I'm loving it!!! I wanted it to capture moments of my daughter and it's perfect. I would just make sure that if you're buying an SLR camera for the first time, keep the following items in mind that should be purchased at the same time. (or closely after) 1. You have to purchase a memory card to take any pictures on the Camera. 2. There are no cords to upload picutes from the camera to the computer. (Which, I'm told is recommended for better quality then uploading the memory card at the store to put on a CD) 3. Get a camera case ASAP to protect your new purchase.
Great for beginners
I was thinking of getting this or the T2i but glad went with nikon. Its cheaper plus quality is great. It's easy to use, lots of features, very stylish. Although I think i'm ready to step up to the mid-range and get the D7000.
Great camera with great pictures
I bought this camera online three days before new year and got it one day before new years eve.( Great service from BestBuy ) Did not have time to read the user guide completely line by line at the time only charge the camera and used it. Great pictures. I bought it in a bundle with bag which comes with two dvd with a lots of information about the D3000 model which is similar to D3100 one with some information how to take use deferent scene and have great pictures. Battery's life is very short I used the camera twice and need to recharge, nothing can do only need to buy a extra battery. Great camera for beginners. I will recommend this to everybody. Also will recommend to buy the zoom lense like 55-200 VR or 70-300 VR they are a great addition to sets of cameras. Also will recommend to buy a lense or camera cleaning kit and for the LCD screen protection will recommend to buy the LCD clear plastic cover too to prevent of any scratch. Overall satisfy with camera and BestBuy's online purchase system.
Great camera!
Love it. Exceeds all expectations! I recommend this camera to anyone who wants to take professional quality photographs yet has limited photographic skills.
I'm a beginner
So far I'm loving it but I'm still learning how to use it
nice camera but no bracketing
Camera takes great pictures and is easy to use out of the box. Love having the features at my fingertips. It is a very good camera, but missing one key fearure of other entry level DSLRs - bracketing. For the money, it is a disappoint that this feature is missing. The reason I bought it was to get a better shot than on my regular digital camera. If bracketing is a important feature than this is not the camera for you.
This camera is light weight, easy to use and great
While I am still a fairly new photographer, I have been keeping busy taking tons of photographs for friends, family and those looking for model portfolios. This camera delivers sharp, high quality photographs with lots of cool in camera features. The high definitely recording capability is excellent as well. This camera is surprisingly very light weight which is perfect when taking on lots of adventurous shoots! I definitely recommend this camera for any new photographer...it has been an amazing and well worth the money purchase!
Good DSLR
This is my first DSLR and I using this for last 6 months. Best buy gave a good bundle offer. This is a great camera for beginners and it is really useful. I got amazing pictures during my New York trip. Picture clarify is good.
Great Camera
Great camera and easy to use. It will automatically take a great picture.
Worth the money!
I bought this camera after my Nikon Coolpix L110 could not be repaired by geek squad. I took the gift card and upgraded to this. I was in-between this camera and the D5100. The only difference is between the two is that the LCD screen is moveable. I've had it for about 2 months now and I'm learning it. I've taken it with me on our family's mini vacation to Virginia Beach, and It did a wonderful job! trying to take pictures at night and finding the right setting was a little bit challenging, but at the aquarium there, it did a wonderful job while the fish moved. I would recommend this camera to anyone who was looking for an upgrade instead of full on professional camera. This was totally worth the money that I paid for.
I LOVE THIS CAMERA!
This is the best camera I've ever owned. Easy to use. Still trying to figure out some of the features. I would recommend this one over any other camera on the market.
Worth every penny
This is my first purchase of a DSLR camera. Having used several different Canon models in the past, and after having read numerous reviews of this model, I opted for this one. I've had it for about two months now and I have had zero issues with this camera. For me, it's been easy to use as I've had a bit of experience with other DSLR cameras. You won't regret buying this camera. I know I haven't. The picture quality is astounding. The battery life has been surprisingly long.
Awesome Camera; Nikon does not disappoint
This is a great camera. Very intuitive and easy to use. It is extremely user friendly and the picture quality is great. The price is extremely reasonable for what you get. I am never disappointed with Nikon and once again it proves to be worth the money.
My first DSLR
I am absolutely in love with the new D3100. Nikon did an excellent job! Pictures are crisp, guide mode is super easy, many different settings, and movie quality is superb. Although its my first PERSONAL DSLR, i have used many others (i'm an amateur photographer) and this one easily trumps the canon rebels and the d3000/ d500. I got one of two that our best buy had on the day it came out. I have no regrets. My Photo. teacher is jealous and my friends are always buzzing to "test it out". Cant wait to get more acclimated to the settings and get some great shots out of it!
a gift for my 17 year old daughter
She opened it on Christmas morning & has taken over 1600 pictures & learning more everyday. If your child is ready for a camera of this quality BUY IT!!!! It's a view of their world.
What's not to like
I had been wanting to step up in quality with my digital camera and finally decided to take the plunge on this Nikon.. I am blown away by the quality of the pictures and the ease of use. The camera leaves alot of room to grow into it as your photography skills and knowledge grows. I recently took the camera to Vegas and ended up taking 550 photos. Battery never needed recharged the entire time. This is a great camera to pick up if you are looking to move into the DSLR range of products.
great for the money
I bought this camera for my wifes christmas present. So far the camera has been easy to use and has taken excellent quality pictures. Only problem I have with it is that when having to use the flash the camera takes a while longer to take the picture which is a big problem when you are trying to take a lot of action pictures fast. I would recommend the bigger lense other than the 18-55mm.
Truly the best DSLR camera for beginners!
I had purchased my D3100 to move away from a "Point-and-shoot" type camera. I LOVE it! It's so easy to use and has the best features! A great camera for everyone!
great camera
The auto focus is great and the camera is easy to adjust for different scenes
Entry level DSLR
If your just getting into the DSLR field I highly recommend this camera. I have only had it a few months and haven't put it through all its various features but thus far I have found no fault with it. Probably the best feature for the user new to DSLRs is the Guide feature which guides you step by step with what you want to do. Also unlike the other lower price Nikons it does shoot video which I haven't tried out yet.
Great camera!
I use this for my photography business and I absolutely love it!
I love this camera
I was in search of a new camera and did a lot of research on the Nikon website. I had already decided on the Nikon brand, the dilemma was, which one? After deciding the D3100 was perfect for my needs, I set out to see what other people were saying about it. The glowing reviews on this site convinced me, along with pictures reviewers posted that they took with their D3100's. When I went to my nearest Best Buy to purchase this camera, along with other products I was in the market for, it was nice to find out it was one sale for just under $600. I love this camera. Once I did a little experiment picture taking around the house, and reading the manual that came with it, I was thrilled at the ease of using this camera. I'm visiting family out of state for Thanksgiving and this camera will be perfect for catching all those family moments you want to remember and treasure. I took a close-up picture of my African Violet plant which is still flowering on my living room window sill using the close-up setting and it came out so good, I'm now using the picture for my computer desktop.
First DSLR Purchase
I have been shopping around for a new camera for some time. I have looked into the Sony NEX-5, Canon t1i and t2i and the Nikon D5000 all of which seem to be great cameras. However they all seemed to lack certain things I wanted in a camera whether that was a feature, accessories or price they didn't seem to offer the full package. It was when I was going through my twitter feed that I heard about the new line of Nikon cameras coming out (D3100 and D7000) when I knew the decision became easy. The Nikon D3100 offers a full featured camera with great video and all of the needed accessory offerings at a great starting price. It is also light, compact and very easy to use. The camera is far more capable than I will be able to use which is nice knowing that my photos and videos will keep getting better. As a first time DSLR owner I am very pleased with this camera and look forward to using it on a regular basis. My only recommendation to those looking to get one is add the 4yr warranty to get the accidental protection to ensure your camera is taken care of if anything comes up.
Great camera
I have owned Nikon cameras before and love their quality. I haven't been using this new one long, but so far I am pleased with the results. The camera offers a lot of bang, will take some time to get used to all it has to offer. The piciture quality is great - I think there is a high learning curve on this camera - but you will love the end results.
High-end beginner's camera
Got this as a gift for my girlfriend and she loves it. Takes really good pictures.
Great camera for the beginner
Really love this camera. Only had for a week and would not change to a different camera. This is my first camera like this and it will take some time to learn everything to do. Only thing I wish it came with is the cable to download pictures onto your computer. The cord through Best Buy is $58.00.
Great Camera for a semi-pro
Great camera for non pro photographer, easy to use, the camera has a heldp guide that helps take great photos. It's a Nikon, so don't be afraid to buy it. Lots of features, high control of the camera if you like to set parameters.
The Nikon D3100 is an excellent entry-level DSLR
This is my first time buying a Digital SLR. I have mainly used point and shoot cameras in the past and have always had fun taking pictures. I wanted to start digital photography as a hobby so I decided to buy a nicer camera. I love this camera as it does a good job of taking pictures and is not very heavy. It looks like it should be, but does not feel like it is. It appears to be a very sturdy camera.
Surprisingly good
As a Canon 40D user, I purchased Nikon D3100 for the video features (especially, auto focusing) and am amazed at the picture quality as well as HD video recording. The picture images are clear and show little grains under low light conditions. ISO400 is very comparable to 40D's ISO200. ISO800 still shows little noises doing better job than 40D's ISO400. HD video is easier to record with autofocusing. I have tested Canon T2i and thus can tell that D3100 is the winner in that respect. The price is also reasonable. I wonder why I have sticked to Canon bodies.
Great Combo
Wanted a light DSLR to take camping/hiking. The D3100 with the light weight and very sharp kit lens is great. 18-55 also does a respectable job for semi-macro work since it can focus so close. The D3100 controls are well setup. I shoot 65%+ manual and I can adjust this body is easier as many I have used to date. I have played very little with the video, but it does not seem to work very well. You can hear the focus motor and the focus tracking is really bad. Again I have maybe an hour trying the video side. I still gave a high rating for the photo side, it is great, video is not why I got this camera.
Excellent camera even for a beginner
This is an excellent camera; easy enough for a beginner to use, enough features for a professional. We recently bought this camera for a cruise and it was wonderful even though I am a beginner. While on the cruise we ran into a experienced photographer using the same camera and he still loves this camera. Only down side is this type of camera is price, but you do get what you pay for with this camera.
Great Camera for beginner or Professional
I love this camera, it has great features, takes great pics, also very easy to use. You also have control over special effects, and with the built in guide, even a beginner can get great results.
Love it! Great for beginner
As a beginner DSLR user, I love this camera...I think it will be great for growing as there are so many features that I can continue to learn. The photo quality is great..it's expensive compared to my normal point and shoot cameras..however, I expect it to be worth every cent.
AWESOME!
I JUST got this nikon today and I'm already in love with it, I've been waiting quite IMpatiently for the past month or so waiting for it to actually come out and be available for purchase, and the wait has definitely been worth while! it takes amazing pictures, they are beautiful and crisp. The camera has a lot of neat functions and it's quite easy to use! I just got it today so I'm still figuring things out but I know that this will be my new love! THANK YOU NIKON!
