Panasonic Lumix DMC-FH5 is a 16 mega pixel ultra-compact camera. It uses 4x optical zoom Leica lens. The latest ultra-compact camera from Panasonic is able to capture 720p HD videos. The Lumix FH5 has optical image stabilization, iAuto and several shooting mode.

The iAuto feature in the Lumix FH5 automatically detects the setting for the camera, depending on the scene. The settings include the Shade, Motion, Face, Scene, Subject and Light detection. The ultra camera uses Panasonic’s the Venus Engine VI processor, which the technology that captures quality images for Panasonic cameras.

The best feature of this 16 megapixel camera is its US$150.00 or £92 price tag.

ULTRA-COMPACT CAMERA HANDLING

The ultra-compact design of the Lumix DMC-FH5 is sleek and stylish. The camera is designed so there are just a few buttons in the body. The camera is said to have better camera settings with a screen assistant feature which tells you the function of a particular control. The camera uses a 2.7 inch LCD.

OUTDOOR IMAGES

The Lumix FH5 produces crisp image when shooting outdoors, using the iAuto mode. However the images can sometime come out overexposed, specifically when capturing the sky and building in one frame. Over cast lighting is not something that this camera easily adjusts to.

LENS FOR FRAMING & COMPOSING

The Leica lens has a 35mm equivalent of 28-112mm. It is great for taking pictures of landscape or for portrait. It is kind of lacking in the telephoto aspect.

INDOOR IMAGES

The camera takes decent indoor photo using ISO 400 and below. If you adjust the ISO a bit higher it will result in loss of detail and image noise.

VIDEO CAPTURE

The 720p HD video’s overall image quality is decent and play back is smooth. There is a mic which picks up audio and is sensitive so that it also captures noise.

BOTTOM LINE
If you are on a tight budget, you can consider the Lumix FH5 as one of the cameras to test out.
