Still going strong after two, 12 month deployments

4 stars

I originally bought this camera back in 2006 when my husband was soon to deploy and wanted to make sure that he documented his tour there. We "tested" it out on our trip to Cabo a few months prior to his tour and it took great photos. He took it to Iraq, clean shots, good photo quality, only thing was that it received a scratch on the screen but it was still readable. Went on his second tour still works the same since the day we got it. Takes really nice underwater photos, video camera is not the best but we were not buying it for that reason so I can't complain. This camera is a great rugged, point and shoot for anyone with a very active lifestyle. Would recommend to anyone!!

Olympus Will Not Repair

1 stars

This camera worked great ... when it worked. After 4 months of use for no reason whatsoever it stopped working. At first the lens would not open reliably, often causing me to miss my shot. Then it would not open at all. I sent it back to Olympus three times and on the first 2 times they said they made repairs, but when it was returned the camera would still not turn on. On the third return they said nothing was wrong with it. I am beyond frustrated. I could never get this camera to even turn on, yet they say nothing is wrong with it. A warranty is useless if the company just keeps mailing it back broken. I tried 2 different fully charged batteries. So very frustrating.

Tough.... NOT!

1 stars

Purchasing this camera was BIGGEST mistake I ever made. I had used the "Tough" lightly for about the first 6 months of having it, not really taking it under water, just by the pool. But when we booked a cruise for our friends wedding to the eastern carribean I though perfect, I invested in this underwater camera and I'll take it on our snorkeling trip. The camera didn't even make it an arm lengths depth in the water before it quit working. Then to top it during our trip, 3 other people who had the SAME "Tough" camera all had their camera quit working. When I got back to the US I brought it to geek squad (since I also spent $70 and purchased the extended warranty through bestbuy) to find out that olympus will not repair the camera as it would cost less just to replace it with a comparable camera. So I though, that's fair - but little did I know.... I asked for the replacement to be the exact same camera since they still sell it, and they said I would have to pay $50 more dollars if I wanted the same exact camera. You see, when I purchased the camera it was retailing for $399.99 - but Walmart had the camera for $329.99, so I price matched the camera. Bestbuy said they will only replace the camera with another camera of comparabe price that I paid and since now the camera is still selling for $379.99 there is where the $50 difference comes from - not with the same camera or a camera of comparable features unless I paid the difference. This was the worst experience I have ever had with a camera and I would never buy another "Tough" or Olympus for that matter again. If you still choose to buy this camera after reading all of these negative reviews, good luck to ya...

Terrible Experience

1 stars

Find another camera. I have purchased cameras from several different manufacturers, and this was by far my worst experience. The camera was purchased for a white water rafting trip to the Grand Canyon. After day 1, the "waterproof" and "shockproof" camera simply stopped working. Even more disappointing than the camera's performance was the company's response. Rude is an understatement. I will never do business with this company again and urge everyone to spend your money on a camera that actually works.

Poor Exposure With Flash

3 stars

I previously owned an Olympus Stylus SW770 for recreational photography: underwater, family, friends. It worked great but after five years the LCD stopped working so I decided to upgrade. This camera seems to have issues with exposure. When you use the fill flash the picture turns out dark-- obviously FILL doesn't mean added exposure. The camera works against the fill flash. Also, The camera fails to read the subject with backlighting even with the flash. Photos are inconsistently exposed, even when shot indoors. THe same scene, three shots, three exposures, three different results. I don't know why camera companies improve their cameras by simply added more bells and whistles at the apparent expense of actual picture quality. A great camera line just became and average one.

Great for active people with kids

5 stars

Okay, first I have to say that this is my 5th camera in 3 yrs.. I am a pretty active person and I have kids. In the past I have always had to worry when we went camping, hiking, boating or whatever. I always worried because I know how fragile small electronics are. That is NOT the case any more. Now I know if it falls while we are hiking or cycling and goes flying, I don't have to worry. If we go to a water park and it gets splashed or someone drops it in the water, I don't have to worry. It IS a huge relief to not have to worry about it getting broken all the time. The picture quality is great and the screen is pretty easy to see, even in really bright surroundings. If you do purchase this camera, you will not be disappointed. You may want to take a step back though after you see the price, but it is worth it.

DON'T BUY STYLUS

1 stars

I have the Olympus Stylus for two years and it has already broken due to water. Olympus has the worst customer service I have ever seen. They take forever to respond, they hang up, they honestly don't even care that their product has horrible performance and breaks in the water. They quote the product as being indestructible yet it is already broken. NEVER BUY THIS PRODUCT as the pictures are horrible as well, try taking any night pictures and they won't come out or they will be blurred.

Is Breakable!

3 stars

I bought this camera because I break everything! The last 2 cameras I broke by dropping or getting wet so I thought this camera would be perfect! I'm not a big camera user and I found the features easy use! Picture quality was very good as long as you have it on the correct setting! So if your taking a trip soon you definatly want to read the owners manual and play with it first. I thought because of the cameras durability it would last me atleast 5 years, however, during a family gathering at the lake it suddenly stopped working! I called Olympus the next day only to find out that they only warrenty the product for 1 year reguardless of the tough/proof. In my opinion if something is drop proof, water proof ...ect. it would have a little better warrenty! The customer service rep was very nice and told me that I could have it shipped back to them and they would look at it and call me to tell me how much it would cost to fix it! I have only owned the camers for a year and a half, I could have bought and broke several other cameras for the price I paid for this one! The camera has no scratches or dents and has never been used in the water! The shutter has just suddenly stopped opening and shutting so the camera no longer takes pictures! I do not see the point in investing more money into a camera that shouldn't have broke in the first place!

What's Up Olympus?!

2 stars

My first digital camera ever: Olympus My first digital underwater camera ever: Olympus Stylus 710. I bought this one because of the reliability of my first Olympus camera. Had the Stylus 710 for 4 years and gave it a run for it's money. But one day the water seal finally gave way. :-( Luckily I purchased the extended warranty through Best Buy and even though I didn't think they would cover it, they did! I could get a new camera. Thank you Best Buy! So I went and picked out another Olympus. This time the Stylus 8000 (not the 8010). EVERYONE must have had problems with this one because I had it back into Best Buy for service 4 times in 6 months for multiple issues such as double images, no display, etc... Finally, they said it was irreparable and said I could get a new camera. I figured it was probably just a lemon 8000 so I went to get another one but they didn't have them anymore. For the same price was the Stylus 8010. Cool! HD video was the new feature. I could record in HD Video! HOWEVER... The Olympus 8010 has many issues: - the "double lock" door still somehow sometimes opens! - video audio is muffled! almost as if the mic is plugged. -camera, even in i-auto mode rarely accurately detects the scene and focuses correctly. -to start and to take a picture are very sluggish. Almost as slow as my original Olympus! Sorry Olympus, I think it's time for me to move on... I think I'll give Nikon a try. My sister has one and she loves it! Reminds me of my first Olympus. Ahhhh... the good old days!

Camera Leaks!

1 stars

I bought a Stylus Tough 8000 and it broke about a month later, I sent it into the repair station and they 'repaired' it and sent it back. It broke again, then I had to resend it back in and it broke once again. They finally sent me a new Stylus Tough 8010 and it broke once again. All water damage from leaks in the camera. I tried to send it into get it fixed and they told me it was out of warranty now. I have since bought a Nikon and it has been the best decision I have ever made. Save yourself the heart ache and buy any other camera. I will never buy an Olympus product again!

JUNK!

1 stars

I bought this camera about a year and a month ago (so its just outside warranty) and after very few uses, its BROKE. Its not tough by any means. I bought the camera to use specifically for my travels. It worked great for my honeymoon a year ago (thank god), but a year later on my anniversary trip to Jamaica, it BROKE. I was extremely upset because i got very few photos of my trip and I'm lucky to have them, as water got into the battery/memory card department. I followed all instructions on how to care for the camera (which a child could do) and it still broke. At first the battery wouldn't charge, I thought it might have been the charger, but that wasn't it. I eventually got the battery to charge. While using the camera the lens cover wouldn't open, though the power light was on. I then opened the battery compartment, just to realize it was filled with water (no wonder my battery wasn't charging). My memory card was soaked. I tried to dry it out with a blow dryer, but its done for. I contacted Olympus, and they could really care less. They said they'd gladly fix it at my expense. They are selling a virtually "unbreakable" product, that broke, not because i drove over it with my car, or exceeded the 15ft limit under water- but simply because the product is not what they say it is. I am sure if i send it back, it will cost me more to fix it, then what its worth, and probably will break agian. I would NOT recommend this product. Its a piece of junk, and it is the first and last olympus product i will ever buy. I feel like i threw $300 in the garbage.

Amazing camera with a lot of features

5 stars

This is probably the best waterproof camera to buy considering the amount of features it offers. Most waterproof cameras don't have the same features as a regular digital camera or a 14.1 megapixel resolution, aside from the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2. This camera can take anything you throw at it, too. Not sure how many times my mother-in-law dropped or smacked this camera into hard objects and it was just fine. Not even scratched. The high-gloss casing leaves some of the most visible smudging from oily or wet fingers that I've ever seen but it looks beautiful with a quick soft cloth buffing. The screen is wonderful and very detailed. All of the functions are down the right side of the screen and are easily accessed by changing the first setting from auto to manual. The panoramic photo stitching is a cool feature once you learn how to use it and makes some pretty amazing and massive images. This camera has exceeded my expectations with amazing underwater images and 720p video that really made my destination wedding memorable. It's pricey, but it has more features than the next best waterproof, 14-megapixel digital camera, the Panasonic Lumix DMC-TS2, and has HDMI out for viewing your video directly on your bigscreen HDTV without the need for a computer. You can pretty much replace your camcorder with this.
