Nikon D7000

When we researched about the Nikon D7000 we noticed one common denominator, sort of a general consensus by professional photographers, gadget geeks and hobbyists. The consensus is that the Nikon D7000 is not only a great mid-level DSLR camera, it probably is one of the best ones out there.

The Nikon D7000 is a well equipped 16 mega pixel DSLR camera which sports the best and newest technology from Nikon.

The Nikon D7000 is a DSLR that somehow comes in between the performance of the D300 models and the D90 and even offer other options and features not found in both popular DSLR cameras.

NEW NIKON TECHNOLOGY

So Nikon D7000 is basically great because it’s the newest camera from Nikon that sports all the new technology the camera brand has been researching and testing all these years. The new Nikon technology includes the 16 megapixel DX format CMOS image sensor. There is the EXPEED 2 image sensor and an upgraded 39 point AF system.

The Nikon D7000 boasts of Nikon’s robust metering sensor (2,016 pixels). It is capable of recording full HD videos at 1080p. Pretty awesome features for just a mid level DSLR.

DSLR CAMERA BODY

The body of the Nikon D7000 is excellently built as well. The body is made of a rugged magnesium-alloy chassis which is said to be weather and dust proof (exterior wise). If you have a Nikon D90 you would find the handling of the Nikon D7000 similar. The body of the Nikon D7000 weighs 24 ounces. We love how the Nikon D7000 handles and it is great size and weight for a DSLR camera.

SETTINGS

The Nikon D7000 DSLR camera is as much a camera for enthusiasts like us as it is a professional photographer’s camera. The Nikon D7000 has a choice of exposure controls and in-camera processing options. There is the Aperture and Shutter priority mode as well as the full Manual mode. Since photography is all about fine tuning manual controls to give your image a unique and creative feel, the controls that the Nikon D7000 offers is quite perfect.

If you just want a great camera but do not want to tinker too much with the manual controls then it’s Auto and Program mode works just as well thus making the Nikon D7000 a great hobbyist camera as well.

Other impressive features that Nikon placed on the D7000 is the dual SD/SDHC/SDXC card slots. Plus it’s LCD is top notch waving a 3 inch screen with 921 pixels of resolution. It spouts a manual view finder as well as a Live View mode. What we like is Nikon’s plastic covering for the Nikon D7000 LCD which comes with the camera, something that you do not find in say Canon DLSR packages.

The Nikon D7000 ISO goes as low as 100 to 6400 with a expandable ISO if 25,600. The exposure compensation in the D7000 reaches up to 5 plus or minus EV in 1/3 or ½ EV steps.

DSLR PERFORMANCE

Let’s talk about image performance of the Nikon D7000.

For its price range the performance of the Nikon D7000 blows the competition out of the water! It’s burst capture mode is spectacular and you can choose between Continuous Low and Continuous High.

The CL file can capture 29 images large files in just 9.8 seconds with no buffer slow down. The CH mode of the Nikon D7000 can even capture 40 frames in 6.8 seconds – wow!

When viewing the photos you will notice that Nikon has added some JPEG compression setting options and these are Optimal Quality and Size Priority.

The images produced by they are terrific with accurate colors and sharpness. The 2016 pixel RGB 3D Matrix Metering sensor is hyped by Nikon as a groundbreaking sensor and the hype seems to be done accurately. Along with the new Scene Recognition system the metering and flash output has been working well and produced great images.

Even the video capture of the Nikon seems to be working fine and matched with Nikon lenses can take some amazing videos.

So what’s the bottom line? This camera outperforms cameras of its class and even cameras with higher price point. What the Nikon D7000 benefits from is the latest Nikon technology which results in amazing images and overall DSLR performance. For the price tag of a mid level DSLR and the performance of a high class DSLR the Nikon D7000 is an amazing buy. Get it now if you can find stocks of it.

This camera is awesome

5 stars

I'm still learning all the tricks to this camera and am far from an expert photographer and I can still capture amazing photos & video. Just be aware to buy a fast writing memory card if you plan to do a lot of video with this camera because I made the mistake of buying the wrong memory card and had trouble with recording videos.

Best High ISO camera to date.

5 stars

Been shooting for over 34 years. large format, medium format, German made, Japanese made.....Started out with the Nikon D1X when it first evolved. then the D2x, D70, D200, and D300. But I like the quality of the files from this camera best. Full frame (D3) may be better, but at an extreme price. Bang for the buck, there isn't a better camera if you already have the glass like myself. I use my manual lenses, AF lens, AFD lens, AFG lens, and my AFS lens with no problems. For low light shooting, this is the best I've owned. Lowest noise level of all I've owned. If you have owned previous Nikon digital cameras, this will be no problem mastering. Only short coming is the bracketing feature, because I shoot a lot of HDR photo's. But I can do it manually. Excellent color, sharp detail, and low noise. Probably will by a second one and replace my D300. Not as rugged, but just as good. Something I never thought would be great is the video. The quality is second to none as far as DSLR goes. Built in mic is not great, but external works well.

This camera is awesome I upgraded from a nikon 300s and also have owned d3000 and canon 7d which i took it back because of electronic problems . Its Fast video is awesome and being able to control aperture and f stop at the same time is what i need and easy compared to my canon 7d. WOW the price for d7000 is cheap thats a good deal i bought it the week it came out for $400 more than the price now and would bye it again .... thinking on picking up another one for a desprado

From a D90 user.

5 stars

This camera is definitely an upgrade from the D90. I was lucky enough to get this camera before it was release! It definitely feels better in your hands than the D90. As of now, there is not one thing I miss from the D90. Dual memory card is great, my raw goes to slot 1 and my hd video to slot 2. Auto focus feels faster, and it works great when shooting video. Screen looks better, better colors and all. I recommend this camera, but I still like to see what dxomark.com says about the sensor. The D90 sensor beats by far the Canon 7D on RAW quality pictures; I hope the D7000 shows better performance. 1/8000 a plus to stop motion, and you also be able to do time lapse!!

Excellent camera for the serious photographer

5 stars

Unfortunately the body only is very rare;so that, I had to purchase a kit lens with the camera. For my needs the 18 - 105 is uselessly redundant. As far as the body itself is concerned, the ergonomics are great. Image quality, advance speed is good, auotfocus seems great, and overall the camera just feels great in my hands. None of the cheep plastically feel of some digital SLRs. In other words, a typical, serious Nikon. I consider myself an advance amatuer who also owns Nikon D 300 and D 90 bodies; plus, lenses from 10 mm to 500. I would recomend this body to any serious shooter and to any one who thinks that they might get heavilly into photography. A better value for the money than the more expensive D 300

Excellent semi-pro camera for photo enthusiasts.

5 stars

I upgraded from my D80 and couldn't be happier. I wanted a quality camera but not as big and heavy as a full frame. This is it! It has a sturdy magnesium alloy body, uses all my Nikon Lenses and is fast and responsive. I've achived some fantastic pictures with the kit lens that comes with it- very sharp. With 16.2MP, I can shoot wide, crop and still enlarge. I've already taken over 3000 pictures and am very pleased. My other lenses are the Nikon FX 70-300mm VR and the new Nikon DX 10-24 mm and I've had great results will them as well. If you're a Nikon fan, it's a no brainer. If you're not sure- take the plunge, Great camera- Great price!

So glad I upgraded!

5 stars

I decided that it was time to upgrade from my D3000, and had been eyeing the D90 and D300s. Then it was announced that they'd be releasing the D7000. I did tons of research and came to the conclusion that the D7000 would fit my needs just right. I was a little apprehensive about purchasing this, especially when I read about so many people have the "hot pixel" issue in live view, and video recording. I decided to go ahead and give it a shot. I didn't purchase this with the intention of recording videos (isn't that what camcorders are for?) or using live view - I'm just not a fan of it, personal thing. After I received my camera, I immediately checked it out for "hot pixels" and sure enough I had four - only visible during live view and video recording (yes, I tried it out - curiosity!). I then updated the firmware (I had to update it twice) - but it got rid of all of the "hot pixels." I can no longer see them in live view or during recording. I know that it might seem annoying to have to do the firmware update, considering it's so new; but it's kind of like the XBOX 360. Updates. I am very happy with my purchase. I love that it's bigger than my D3000. 6fps is very nice. High ISO is lovely. It really is a great camera. If you are considering this camera, I highly recommend going to your local BB store to try it out.

Current Best DSLR out there under $3000

5 stars

Amazing camera! Aside from the specs, which I'm sure youre familiar with, this camera simply feels more like a pro level DSLR. One amazing thing about this camera that I would have never realized without actually using it is that it has a physical little aperture driver (not sure what its called) that lets it use older, manual only Nikon lenses.

Best camera I've ever owned!

5 stars

I've had several entry level DSLR cameras (Canon Rebel, Nikon D40X, Nikon D60) and felt like I was ready to move up to the next level with more features and performance. After reading and researching, the D7000 was my first choice. I'm blown away by how sharp, clear and detailed the pictures are, especially in low light without using the flash. The ability to use my older Nikon 35mm film lenses is a nice plus. The long battery life, high res LCD monitor, build quality and dual memory card slots are great upgrades over entry level cameras. While there are many new features such as Live View and HD movie recording, the D7000 is not intimidating to use if you've had other Nikons in the past, just make sure you read the manual! Highly recommended, you won't have any buyer's remorse with this one!

Fantastic Camera!

5 stars

By far the best camera I've ever worked with. Though, I've never had the privilege to work with the Canon 5D Mark II but from what I can tell this camera is up there with it. Pictures are stunning and I love the quick response of the shutter. I'm even more impressed with how quiet it is. This is the first professional camera I've ever owned (upgrading from the D60) and I couldn't be more pleased with it. The video is stellar, too. In my opinion, it is close to cinematic. If you are advancing from an amateur to novice or even advanced, I think you will really like this camera. Though, I have to say it was pretty hard to come by and, if that is still the case present date, then it is worth the wait. Nice features that have come in handy are the dual memory card slots (yep, two slots) and the two user assigned slots on the dial. This allows you to store your favorite settings which are quickly called when turning the function dial to one of the available slots. All in all, I don't think you can go wrong with this camera. If you are new to photography, I would probably suggest going with something a little more remedial as finding your way through the settings can be a little intimidating (but far from hopeless).

Great look, great feel, great results.

4 stars

I recently purchased the Nikon D-7000 DSLR camera to replace the several digital point and shoot cameras we've grown accustomed to over the years. I used to enjoy 35 mm film photography as a hobby back in the 70's and 80's but eventually switched to the digital format for the obvious benefits (ease of carrying, quality photos, on-site review of photos for satisfaction). However, in the last few months, I began to yearn for the flexibility of the SLR after reviewing photos from recent trips and being less than satisfied. So, after quite a bit of researching, I settled on the Nikon D-7000 and added an 18-200 mm zoom and have not been disappointed. It will be traveling with us on future trips to better document our travels. That will be invariably be more costly than the camera!

Great piece of equipment.

5 stars

Very satisfied with this purchase. Previously had a film SLR (years ago) and was looking to get into the dSLR category. This is a serious camera and you have to know a bit about photography to get the most out of it. It's making me want to learn more and experiment with settings and lighting. Overall a great dSLR that can do anything you want. The kit lens is nice, but a better option may be to go body-only and get a faster lens (fixed 35mm f/1.8) plus a smaller zoom.

Excellent camera to step-up to.

5 stars

I have had my D7000 for about 2 months now with well over 2000 shutter clicks. There is a small learning curve, but once you get familiar with all the menus and screens, it is a work horse. I mainly take nature and bird photos. With the exception of cropping, about 75% of the time I use the photo right out of the camera without any processing. I mainly shoot in manual, with times in shutter priorty. I bought the camera with the kit lens (18 - 105mm) and have been pleased with it's performance. I do plan on getting better lens when the funds are available. The only "con" so far is the cost of an extra battery. Currently at BB it is $80.00. There are other places to get the same Nikon En-El15 battery for a lot less. The attached photo is shot with the kit lens at 105mm, 1/1000, f/6.3, in shutter priorty. Photo was cropped with no over processing.

Great upgrade for the D5000 owner

5 stars

I just purchased this camera after owning a D5000 for just over a year. I've only had the D7000 for a few weeks. It's the best consumer camera in it's class. This camera has features that were previously found on high-end, pro-series Nikon cameras. At this price point, you can't go wrong. Buy it. All of the internet reviews are positive: cnet, dpreview, etc ... One reason for my upgrading was the Nikon Creative Lighting System. I wanted to be able to use this camera as a remote for my SB 600 flash. It's superb for off camera, wireless remote flash capability. My pictures are improving since making this purchase. Nikon got it right! They are setting a new standard in upper-end consumer cameras. They're offering features that we once had to pay several grand for. Let's see what the competition has to say.

Amazing Camera

5 stars

I bought this to replace my Nikon D100. The pictures are amazing. I can take pictures in a dark room without a flash. My D100 would do this but the pictures were very grainy. Not so with the D7000. I am still trying to learn all the settings. The HD video is good, but I can do more with a HD camcorder. The focus motor for the lens is too loud on the D7000 for video.

Best APS-C Camera on the Market.

5 stars

I upgraded from a D5000, and it was well worth it. The biggest upgrade benefits are the video quality, and the low-light ability. The HD video quality is much improved, it looks much more like what comes out of the Canon 5D MKII. The low-light capabilities are amazing. I can shoot at ISO 6400 and still get amazing images. The camera is very responsive, and always gives accurate focus and metering for every photo. This is why I buy Nikon.

Great Mid-Range DSLR

5 stars

This is a great camera and a great buy. This camera falls into the mid-range of DSLR cameras and I think it has many features that set it apart from it's competitors. The D7000 has two SD Memory card slots for backing up as you go, or even making an extra copy to share with friends or clients. This camera also features HD video capabilities and a solid build. The kit lens that comes with the D7000 is also very good. It offers a good range for general photo taking. The burst shooting on the D7000 is fast as well. I recommend this camera and lens combination and find it a very fair deal for the price. I have found the D7000 pretty easy to use and the images it produces are wonderful.

The best camera there is at this price

5 stars

I am a hobby photographer with about two years experience with the Nikon D5000. I have only owned the D7000 for about a week now but It was obvious to me that the D7000 is leaps and bounds better than the D5000. They have improved this camera GREATLY with many options made much easier and accessible on the spot. The auto white balance is incredibly better and is very accurate to the point that if you have to use it, you can rest assured it will make a great pic without too much blue or amber or whatever color. The ISO goes as low as 100 and all the way to 6400 with no expansion! (max 12,500 iso, with expansion) The White balance and ISO button's are available at the touch of a finger and rotate the dial to the desired amount without having to access and menus, same with preset white balance. The auto focus is incredible and many more options such as single point, or a single area or full auto. There is also a "lock" option for after you choose a single point in the frame to focus on so that the point is not moved while shooting by accidentally hitting the arrow buttons. It comes with a plastic cover that snaps on the screen to protect it which is nice because my D5000 did not and it got scratched over time. The dual SD slots are awesome and very necessary. Get ready for huge file sizes!! I have two 8 gig extreme III sandisk and it says it has a capacity of only 545 pictures on each one with the JPEG/ Fine/ Large option! You can assign one as an overflow or one for movies and the other for pics and more. I LOVE that they made it to where you can store two different user settings on it to where you can flip to them at anytime and have your white balance, iso, bracketing, etc etc on memory to call up in an instant! It has an LCD screen that lights up simply with the turn of the power button so that you can see all your settings at anytime, even in the dark. It has a icon notification to let you know when an object is in exact focus when you're using manual focus. You also have the option of "hiding" photos on your SD card so that they are not viewable, for all those creepy guys out there that like to take creeper pics of people without their wife's or girlfriends knowing. lol The battery life doesn't seem to be quite as long of the D5000 but they are much cheaper! The menu also contains a spot where you can customize your own menu and add items that you want, such as the items you access the most frequently for quick access. Which is also awesome! The 18-105mm lens that comes with it, if you buy the package deal, is really nice and has a fast focus. Certainly fast enough for me to enjoy it and not complain at all. This camera also has the option to auto focus even in the middle of shooting a video which the D5000 did not but I still wouldn't recommend it because it is very loud and very audible when watching the video afterward. The continuous release mode (6 fps) is extremely fast and quite impressive! Very handy for sports or any fast motion photography. I can't think of anything else without just repeating the technical features that are already listed to read on the site so I'll stop there.

D7000 has a major flaw

2 stars

I am a true Nikon fan and was patiently waiting for this camera to be released. I purchased it as soon as my local Best buy had it and took it home and started shooting away. Still photos are great. Video has a major flaw. There were glowing pixels appearing on the video in low light or dark scenes. I tested under many different setting and lenses and was always able to duplicate the problem. To make a long story short after exchanging it three separate times they all had the same issue. it appears to me as a flaw in the image sensor where there are faulty or dead pixels. each camera i had had the same issue if different places. After getting three bad one i can only assume there is an issue with this model or maybe the lot that came to south Florida. I would definitely buy this camera again is this issue was corrected. hopefully it does not affect all of them but after getting three bad one i m going to wait a while before purchasing it again.

Absolutely Fabulous

5 stars

I sold my D200 to buy this camera and I'm amazed at the quality of both still image and video produced by this camera. It feels great in my hand, very solid magnesium body. This camera shines in low light conditions and compares to the quality of the d3/d700 sensors. I think Nikon hit a home run with this model. It does everything above expectation. **I read an earlier review that mentioned dead pixels in the video and I cannot confirm that. My video is clear and fluid without any dead pixels.

Guys, there is absolutely no confusion here! Nikon d7000 is the best latest camera as of today that gives Canon eos7d run for it's money. It also leaves behind Canon eos 60d far away! The only downside is that video is average ... If you don't get good shots with this camera, then you have to blame yourself ! Nikon d7000 is THE camera to go for .....

Amazing DSLR. Fast, crisp, sharp images.

5 stars

When I was looking for my first DSLR, I was in the mindset that I wouldn't need alot of extra features because I was still relatively new to the DSLR field. Although I have experience with older film cameras, I decided I wouldn't need them and originally went with the Nikon d3100. Needless to say, I was impressed with the overall picture quality. The AF in video mode was a plus but I felt the camera was lacking customizable options and quality video, and low light shooting. I just felt that I wanted more options. Needless to say, I went with the d7000 and have been absolutely amazed at the improvement in quality on both photo and video modes. My favorite part about this camera is the ability to take movie studio quality video unedited in its entirety. I can even go back and edit everything (photo/video) in camera. The speed of the camera is incredible as well. I can take 6FPS action sequences (on highest photo quality). Although, I still haven't found out how to take more than 10 pics without it slowing down (I think I need to adjust the quality). Either way, this camera is truly amazing and I am thinking about becoming a photographer just to share the beautiful pictures this takes with the world. I am truly amazed by this product, and for all of you who are considering a Nikon d3100/d7000, GO WITH THE D7000! You will not regret it I promise you.

The New D7000 is Fantastic!!!!

5 stars

I was fortunate to get this camera before the release date. It was perfect timing as my sister was getting married over the weekend. Being an advanced amateur photographer I was extremely pleased with this camera. The picture quality was phenomenal and shooting HD video was fantastic. The shutter button was extremely fast and sensitive, which was perfect for shooting some of the wedding action. The dual card slot was great as I was able to backup all 1,330 pictures right away to the second card. I had many people compliment me on the clarity and quality of the photos to the point that they started to place orders for some of the wedding photos from me. The professional photographer that my sister hired was extremely impressed that I already had the D7000 and kept on taking my new D7000 to shoot some of the wedding pictures. He was using a D3 and said that the D7000 was just as good as his D3. This camera is a very nice upgrade from the D90 or the D300. I would recommend this camera to anyone who wants to take beautiful professional pictures without having to spend a fortune for a very advanced professional camera.

Best bang for your $ but....

3 stars

I've been playing with different model of DSLR cameras and I can say that this one definitely is on the top of the food chain when it comes down to 'consumer' price range DSLR camera. But why the 3 stars overall ratings? I think Nikon drop the ball on this one. My camera has the 'hot pixels' issue in the video mode. I have about 4 stuck pixels while shotting video and one of them happened to be in the center of the video and it's RED! If you search online you can see that this is not an isolated issue, a lot of users have been reporting similar issue. It's unfortunate that BB couldn't exchange the kit because it's out of stock everywhere. Hoping to get another camera soon minus the stuck pixels

Awesome pictures and videos.

3 stars

Been waiting for this bad boy to come 3 weeks ago. Today, Oct. 23 it finally came! I was so excited, i couldnt even sleep. The UPS man, rang my doorbell at 10am, i got up so fast and ran to the door, i almost busted my a** on the stairs. Picture quality is awesome, the full HD movie recording was also clear and vibrant. The only reason why i didnt give it a higher then a 3 star rating was because of the "stuck pixel" problem. I didnt notice it until i shot under some low light area that there was a blue dot on the "live View" mode. I read on google that it has something to do with their sensor mechanism but whatever it is i hope they can fix it. Its actually one pixel but just so happens to be near the center of the LCD. If it was in the ipper left corner or right corner, maybe i can deal with it...but near the center? Now i have to return it and xchange for another one, but the problem here is it wont be available for another 2 weeks! Man that SUCK bad! Oh well... But overall if they can fix this problem or if you can buy one without this clich, i would defintely recommed this to anyone whose looking to step into a well balanced, well crafted, and awesome picture quality digital SLR, not to mention video too.

Excellent upgrade!

5 stars

Replacing my D90, had been looking at the D300s when the D7000 appeared. The D7000 had all the right features, better price than the D300s and improved durability over the D90. Using the camera for 3 weeks now, and picture quality is fabulous, multiple scene settings make stunning shots. 6FPS rate is astounding, especially with improved ISO speed. Easily moves from home video (by the way full 1080p) with full autofocus, indoor photos, to outdoor nature and sports. This is an all around robust, and function packed camera. So easy, my wife and kids all enjoy making great moments. This is my 3rd Nikon DSLR and I expect the quality to be the same as I am used to...Excellent. If your in the market for a great DSLR, tis is the camera for you. Just make sure you have disk space for all those great photos you'll be taking.

An Incredible Camera for the Money

5 stars

I purchased this camera to supplement my D5000...Boy this camera is a beautiful piece of machinery..It take great pics...and pretty decent in low light conditions. The only gripe I have is that when auto focusing in video mode, you hear the motor adjusting on the video...in other words, it transfer the motor noise onto you video. Which is not good if you plan to to use the audio of the video. But, I have not really focused on the video part yet since I have been staying mostly with shooting photos. I recommend this camera to all...and i was fortunate enough not to have any dead pixels as reported by several purchasers. And for the money, you really get a lot for it...I just love the dual SD slots as they come in very handy. Amazing dSLR

5 stars

I have been waiting for this camera to be release and I purchased it as soon as it became available. 1.) ISO - has amazing ISO capabilities. Even at 6400, I hardly noticed any noise. 2.) some magnesium body and weather sealing. This is an excellent feature for the price of the camera. 3.) Dual card slots come very handy. You can shoot JPEG in one and MOV in the other or use slot 2 as a backup or overflow. 4.) Supper fast shutter speed. 1/8000. 5.) 6 FPS burst mode. Never miss the action shot. 6.) 1080P @ 24fps video. Takes excellent video. I have shot video and watched it on my HD LCD TV. 7.) 39 focus points. 8.) Shutter tested to 150k actuation. I have only had the camera about 5 days and have taken about 1000 pictures already. Love love love love it!!!

Worthy upgrade to the D90.

5 stars

The D7000 is an amazing camera loaded with great features. The high ISO produces very good pictures with minimal noise. All pictures in good to moderate light are stunning in their clarity and color reproduction. I like the two memory card slots. I use one for my photos and one for videos. Speaking of videos, I have not experienced the dead pixel issue others have noted. I tested my camera in a dark room shooting at 6400 ISO and by leaving the lens cap on and turning on live view to scrutinize the display. This is one great camera. Hopefully any user that has dead pixels will eventually get one free of this issue.

Seriously, friends ... there is no better DSLR camera on the market right now with the features and the price point than the D7000! I've been shooting with this camera for just under a week and it has blown me a way in every aspect! Actually, I even dropped it (2 days after buying it ... my luck) and the body is so strong and sturdy that NOTHING got damaged! It didn't even reflect a scratch! I did get the Geek Squad protection (which I highly recommend by the way) but didn't even have to use it because nothing happened from the drop! The colors pop, the resolution is amazing ... and the video .... WOW to the video!! I seriously want to give Nikon some props for placing such an advanced yet easy to use consumer/professional camera at such an amazing price. Canon ... sorry guys, just doesn't come close to this quality!

Superb camera body

5 stars

I've been shooting film and now digital for around 30 years. This is my third Nikon DSLR. I was holding out for a D700 until I put one of these in my hands and gave it a test drive. Now it occupies my primary camera bag next to my backup D80. What a delightful camera. The shutter is smooth and tight. The body is well-sealed compared to the previous round of consumer grade bodies from Nikon. And low noise, higher ISO performance has saved me from having to buy faster lenses. I just shot a poorly-lit dance festival from a distance using high ISO so I could shoot fast shutter speeds. With my old camera, I would just not try because I could not stand the grain. This camera does a very nice job. The video works well but it is not a full featured video cam. I did not buy this for video. If you want to see some examples of video shot from this camera, google D7000 and Chase Jarvis--he is a pro who put this camera through the motions. Anyway, I've been shooting it for a month and love it.

I like the D7000

5 stars

I like the D7000, it will prove to be one of the Best Cameras MONEY CAN BUY, Period! This is a good Camera and can't wait to get me one. I tested one out, and it was not Heavy, at least not to me, but YES it IS much heavier then my D40, Canon 7D is heavy, but Nikon D7000 is not, but it does a good strong feel to it. It's Fast, and though 1.5FPS doesn't soumd like a whole bunch faster than the D90, it SHOCKED ME how sensitive the Shutter button on D7000 is compared to D90, it is just that much faster, and faster AF to boot I'm an Advanced Amature, and I don't need anything faster, at least for now, then this Beatiful Camera. It's got the features I need: 1st is the 39 AF Points, (which I like) 2nd is the AF MicroAdjust, which D90 didn't have, (which I like) and I had a couple of Lenses that could have used this feature when on the D90, 3rd is the ISO Range improvement, (which I like) 4th is the ISO 1 or 2 stop improvement vs what the D300s was which the D7000 improves upon (which I also like. I could go on and on about other areas that are improved vs the D90 and the D300s for which the D7000 replaces both in my understanding from Nikon

best camera in its class

5 stars

i bought this camera for my wife (she's much more of a photographer than i am), and she absolutely loves it. i don't know a lot about photography, so i did quite a bit of research before i bought this camera; it for the price-range i was looking at, it came down to the nikon D7000 and the canon rebel T2i. while the T2i had better video and a higher megapixel count, the nikon excelled in every other category, including the all-important speed and sensor-chip size categories. because she shoots a lot of subjects in motion, i wanted great shutter-speed and a high burst count, both of which the nikon has a slight advantage in. this also made a higher FPS count when shooting HD video more desirable though, which the canon had an advantage in. what it came down to, then, was picture quality, and the nikon was a clear winner in this category. the nikon does have a lower MP count; however, it's because of this lower count that the picture quality is actually BETTER - the canon tries to stuff too many pixels onto a smaller chip, compromising its ability to resolve data from the lense as clearly. the difference isn't huge, but it's there. combine that with nikon's legendary lenses, and i made my choice! overall, i'd have to say this is the best camera in its class, comparable in some categories even to the much more expensive nikon 200S.

The availability of this camera says it all. It is absoulutely the best camera out there in its size and class. Good feel to it. It has improved ergonomics, the two new shutter options are spiffy (Qmode, and Mup Mode). The low light capability puts this little baby above the D300s. The only thing this camera is really missing is a correction for its "hot Pixels" in video mode. I think Nikon did this so that no one would make professional commercials or market its video. Check out the nikonrumors.com Mine has like three real nasty ones but I dont really care for the video mode. Im do photography and video is just a perk.

Amazing piece of equipment Nikon D7000

5 stars

Photo quality, video quality, low noise at high ISO is excellent. Also, Nikon Flash is the best flash photo quality of any camera I have owned. This camera is amazing. I also own a D300 DSLR (with no video) and now the D7000 is a perfect complement. Initially I thought that I will still be using my D300 for Sport Photography and stills but I find myself only using the D7000 for both Photo and video, The fps are so close the difference is insignificant - actually I find the D7000 faster (I think the buffer is better). The photography quality and features are so good for teh D7000 that I do not miss my D300 (except for a few minor things) My only disappointment so far is the video continuous auto focus in two areas. The first is that is tends to auto focus the wrong thing and therefore being annoying since the main subject is out-of-focus frequently. mainly on moving objects and sports (e.g. soccer, basketball) - no matter which setting I use (Face detection, normal, wide, etc). For me it is disappointing because prior to the D7000 I was using a Panasonic HD camcorder and the auto focus response is significantly different. Also the D7000 auto focus is very slow in comparison - so when it focus on the wrong thing it takes SECONDS! to focus back on the target subject. The second area is that the D7000 has some difficulties auto focusing ion low light. I guess in summary the autofocus (if you are used to a hi-end camcorder) is not comparable yet and the technology has to come further to compare to a proper camcorder - but this is in terms of teh auto In terms of the video quality the D7000 is superior and excellent! I have tried both the 1080 and 720 and I love the video quality (when it is in focus). I have managed to develop new skills to mitigate the auto focus and because all the other feature of this camera are so amazing and superior - I compromise. Lastly, an articulating LCD screen would be a significant addition and it is lacking one. I was recording an activity for my daughter with a monopod and raised above head level (had to go high to miss other people heads in front of me) and got a crick in my neck. I miss this from my camcoder.

Amazing upgrade!

4 stars

I had the Nikon D5000 and i learned so much from it and it was time for an upgrade. And so i got me the Nikon D7000 is it is well worth the upgrade! The pictures are so vivid and great ISO performance for its class. And coming form the D5k i had to learn all the new controls but so far i am getting the hang of it and it has only been 3 days! But there is plenty to dig through the features. I'm also excited that i can change ISO, White balance, Shutter mode, and focus mode on the fly! Another great plus is the build quality is unmatched in its class. Also weather sealed! My only problem (and i guess im not the only one...) is i found 2 stuck pixels on live view mode and when i record videos then upload it its still there on my computer! there is red and greed pixel close to the center of the screen... i will have to exchange it later this week and wait till BB gets more in stock... what a shame. Whats worse is i customized my User 1 and 2 settings and will have to do it over again. Other that that i could not be happier with this camera!

This is my first DSLR. I was able to pick up the D7000 and go through the controls without much help from the manual. It takes great pictures even indoors without a flash in the right lighting. If you do a lot of indoor photography you will need an overpriced Nikon speed light because the built in flash is weak. For close to $1500 with lens It should come with an HDMI cable instead of the useless USB and composite cables. Movie mode is decent but very time consuming to get good results.

A WOW camera

4 stars

Let me start off by saying that I am new to the DSLR world. However, I did a huge amount of research before selecting this camera, and I am not disappointed at all. The way buttons are arranged, the sturdy feel of the camera, and the picture quality are just perfect. I don't have much plans for videos though, but the video quality is good as well. Now, why not giving it 5 stars? it is simply because my first copy of the camera had a quite noticeable number of "hot" pixels in picture and movie modes. These "hot" pixels were not a problem of the LCD screen, it was the sensor. Given the large demand on this camera, I was lucky to find another copy at my local BB (bought the first copy online), so one star less for the emotional stress and the hassle. If you have the same problem I had, my advise is: check your camera as soon as you can and, unless you enjoy sending a new (and expensive) camera for repair, ask for a replacement.

Best for the Money

5 stars

Was saving up to buy a D300s when I heard about this camera. Thankfully, I did not buy the D300s a couple of months ago or I would have missed out on this great D7000! Not only are the features superior to most other DSLRs out there, but the fine tweaks rule. WB on auto has matched nearly perfect to what a RAW file will produce with software correction. Exposure control took a little getting used to and I am still working on mastering it, but so far for me, no more real need to shoot in Camera RAW. As I get better with this camera, the images produced are more accurate than ever before. With the amount of photos I take, RAW used to put a real damper on my workflow. I still shoot critical images in both RAW and JPG, but I have not had to use a RAW file yet. After I get good use and time on this camera, I hope to some day move up to a Full Frame. By then, Nikon will hopefully have a Full Frame camera that is as good in its class as the D7000 is today in it's class.

great camera for those looking for higher end DSLR

5 stars

Very few faults with camera, just really a great dslr., It compares well to canon 60d and even the more expensive 7d. The user 1 and user 2 modes on the main dial are incredibly useful for me (can make settings exactly how I want and switch to them almost instantly.) The viewfinder is just perfect, bright, big, and basically 100% of frame is seen! Lots of lens options. Higher end or lower end used/alternative mfg options for this camera will work and that to me was a deciding factor. Great 6fps continous shooting mode. Autofocus is very fast and generally much more accurate than any other dslr's I've used. Easy to bracket and very nice exposure metering in camera. Try it in store as ergonomics may be an issue for you...there is no swivel screen like some similar competing cameras like 60d or GH2. And there are some very small buttons and a dial for changing shooting shutter button mode to single, continuous high low etc. However compared to the two aforementioned cameras I notice that this camera feels more like a higher end camera with a really nice magnesium weather sealed body, it just feels tougher and i do a lot of outdoor photography so that did it for me. Please note, If you are getting this exclusively for video capability the new full time autofocus in video I don't think works that well(searches quite a bit).... video would not be a deciding factor for me; as videos of family, kids etc might just turn out better with a nice camera phone camera. Overall it works as well as other dslr video functions out there. Be honest with yourself though as you may just see the price drop on this soon and some features may not be that much of an upgrade from a camera you already have. Great camera overall, and I'm enjoying shooting with it.

THE BEST SEMI-PRO DSLR THAT NIKON HAVE TO DATE!!!

5 stars

I just bought this bad-boy yesterday after months of reading all the reviews (heads up to KenRockwell!) and finally decided to buy it! I was hoping to get the body alone since I have no use for the 18-105mm kit lens that it came with but, oh well, it's the body that I'm after for!!! This SLR is one of the BEST that Nikon ever had! The pictures are just amazing even without using those softwares to enhance even more the photos - IMAGINE IF YOU DID - it's just stunning! I still have my D5000 as a back-up camera that now uses that 18-105mm. Next lens to get is the 10-24mm or the Tokina 11-16mm and I'm set (already have the 18-200mm VR II, 35mm f/1.8G, and the 50mm) or save more to get the 70-200mm VR. GET THIS CAMERA, you will not get disappointed!!!

Great camera at a good price point.

5 stars

I spent several months trying to decide if I should purchase this Nikon or the Canon 7d. Ultimately it came down to a bang for my buck situation. Both cameras are very nice and perform extremely well. I decided on the Nikon because I could get the camera and 2 lenses for the same price as the Canon with 1 lens. Alright, this camera does a great job at just about everything. Lets start with the basics. It has a 16.2MP sensor that produces great picture quality. Do not get caught up in the megapixel race when deciding on a camera. Even though many of canon's cameras are now offering a 18MP camera, it does not make them so much better. In fact, the resolution between the D7000 and the 7d are almost equal. It is because the actual physical size of Nikon sensors are slightly larger than that of canon's. The AF system on the D7000 is great. It offers a 39 point AF with 9 of them being cross point. It is very responsive and allows you to take images of randomly moving objects well. It is also very easy to customize your AF based on what you are shooting. The new Expeed 2 processor does a great job quickly writing images. It is capable of shooting up to 6fps while in Ch (continuous high). It will shoot 18jpegs and 10 RAW images continuously before slowing for buffering. I am not huge into video recording so I can't speak at length about the features on this camera. My basic understanding is that Canon does video better than Nikon does, but this camera still does a good job. It offers 1080p at 24fps but not 30fps, as well as 720p at 24fps and 30fps. It is not a huge deal that it doesn't offer 30fps at 1080p unless you are serious about filmography. If that is the case I would definitely recommend a Canon. It has a great viewfinder with 100% view. The AF points light up clearly while shooting and there is also a grid layout option. All the shooting info is clearly visible at the bottom while shooting as well. Has a great metering system that constantly shows you if you are over or underexposed while changing the shutter speed or aperture. This is great to be able to see in the viewfinder so you can make changes right away rather than trying to decide if your image is ok based off the LCD screen. Very nice 3" Live View LCD screen (920,000 dot). Lots of menu options displayed on screen while shooting in live mode. There are tons of menu options that allow you to customize like crazy. In fact, the menu options can be a bit overwhelming at first. I have spent about 20 hours or so going through everything. I was able to go through all of this information because the users manual that is packaged with the camera is very comprehensive and very easy to understand. Nikon did a nice job on the manual. Love this camera. Its been about 2 weeks now since I bought it and it has not disappointed. It really was a struggle deciding between this and the 7d. I don't think I could have gone wrong either way. The 7d is a great camera, probably a touch better than the D7000 in most aspects, but I think I got a better value with the Nikon.

no hot pixels..

5 stars

Like all the previous reviews, the camera is hands down, the best DSLR in it's class. The first kit I picked up had (2) hot pixels in video mode. I took the kit back to BB for an exchange and the customer service rep allowed me to power up the new camera in the store to check for the hot pixels, which luckily it didn't. Very happy with this purchase!

I'm a hobbyist/amateur photographer and love this camera! It is easy to learn to use for those that are not on the professional level, but want professional quality. There is so much to learn with all the features available, but even not knowing everything, you can still take great pictures. Can't wait til I can buy an extra battery.

If you are thinking about upgrading to the D90 I would recommend spending the extra $ and going with the D7000 it is well woth it. I have not had the pixel issue on the screen but I don't use the camera as a camcorder. It is a camera not a camcorder.

I have not one complaint about this camera and lens. I upgraded from a D40.. and WOW! It took me a few days to get used to the settings.. but once I did it is very user friendly. I rarely use the video side just b/c I forget it is there.. but when I do it truly is great. I have had not one issue like I have heard some have had. My husband ordered it for me for Christmas but let me open it early b/c I was so obsessed with it.

I bought the Nikon D7000 to replace my D70. It is absolutely hands down worth every cent spent on it. I took some pictures of the Sierras this afternoon and the clarity is spectacular. I take alot of family pictures as well and the pictures are stunning. This camera is for lack of a better word Awesome. I am using the 18-105mm that comes in the kit and the range is perfect for every picture I have taken. Excellent camera, won't have to upgrade for a long time.

great second DSLR

5 stars

I primarily shoot in low light, mostly just friends' bands at small clubs. It was such a pain getting good shots in low light with my older D40. I was looking for a second camera, and really considered the D700 as well before buying the D7000. The high iso performance is great. The video feature works great. It works with my existing lenses just fine. I don't know if I'll ever use the kit lens much but I was going to try to sell it with my d40 to fund more glass later. I was going to keep the 18-55 that came with the D40 because it's a bit smaller form factor if I want to shoot landscapes with it at some point.

Right combo of image quality, camera features

5 stars

I waited for 8 months for this next gen camera to come out, resisting the urge to buy the Canon 60D and Sony a55 which were available first. Very pleased with the the picture quality, image colors and tones. Autofocus is snappy and reliable. Camera controls easy to learn. I purchased this camera in part for the features but also for the Nikkor glass, which is outstanding and will far outlive the investment in this camera. I recommend you check out KenRockwell.com and look for his Nikon lens dream team article to get you matched up with the right lenses for this camera. Very pleased so far with the 2000 shots I've taken in the month I've owned it, and highly recommend this camera.

D7000 is a true prosumer offering

5 stars

My D90 was an great camera. However, the D7000 is a consumer priced SLR with a professional feel. The D7000 raised the bar with the feel of the body, AF system, white balance, menu features, and button layout . Also to ISO is very good at 6400. Feel of the body- The new squared grip with real rubber along with the increased weight balances out the camera well. AF System- Is bigger, faster, and more accurate. White Balance- AMAZING. on AUTO I had to touch up my D90 WB on most of my photos but the D7000 out of the box on AUTO nailed the WB everytime. Menu Features- Many new additions and a great user buildable menu. Read the manual because there are tons of great little features. Button Layout- Is similar to the D90 but the rasied AE lock is easier to find without looking. Play and delete located right next to each other. Two FN on front (FN and DOF preview is programable!) is nice. ISO- Shot a picture of a wall outlet with the lights off, and under a table with on an aquarium light 20 feet away. The picture was bright and clear with slightly noticable noise. Ease of use is reduced due to the large amount of menu items. The D7000 is a more professional D90. Its a tool to take your photos to the next level.

exceeded my expectations

5 stars

For the price, this is an excellent camera. My D200 recently broke and I was debating between this camera and the D300. The D700 was out of my price range. I'm really happy with this camera, but there's still many features on the D300 that I wish I had. This has a much better focusing system than the D200. The white balancing and metering system is also much improved. Taking pictures with higher ISO generates cleaner pictures with less noise. Having a dual memory card system has already saved my hide since my brand new 16Gb/class10 SD card failed the first time out - I had set it up where the second SD card backed up the first. I didn't lose a single shot. You also have much better control over bracketing a shot. The D200/300 gave you the option of bracketing 3/5/7 frames. The D7000 only gives you 3 frames of bracketing however you have control over how many stops you wish to bracket 1/3, ½, 1, 2. This becomes critical if you are going to get into HDR photography. It has a very solid feel to it - not as good as a D200/D300, but much better than the D90 or most of Canon's offerings. Canon's D60 to me feely light and plastic-ey - this feels like a well-constructed SLR. The magnesium body gives it a great feel and balance and a sense of durability. The videos taken from this camera are simply stunning. I'm tossing my video camera. There is noise from the focusing mechanism that is picked up from the mic of the camera when you take videos. If you use lenses that have noisy focusing, it will be very annoying. Internally focused lenses won't be much of a problem. I also had problems with the camera staying in focus when shooting video. As a pure video camera it probably wouldn't be completely adequate. No image stabilization - so having it on a tripod will be essential to taking good video. If you decide to take 1080p video - make sure your SD card is Class 10. Setting your 2nd SD Card as a backup does NOT backup the video, only still photos. I wish it had a compact flash slot. The writing speeds on CF cards are much higher than SD. You would get longer burst rates from CF. I also wish it took pictures in either TIFF (The D300 takes TIFF and has a CF slot) or RAW format but in a lower resolution. 16 mega pixels is overkill for 98% of the people who use this camera. I wish it had a setting where I can take 12 megapixel RAW. Speaking of RAW, this camera uses a new Nikon RAW file format that is NOT Supported by Photoshop CS4 or Photoshop Elements 8 or Lightroom 2.6- You have to upgrade if you're planning on using Adobe. (This cost me another $400 on top of the camera - the applications support the D300). By using 16 megapixel RAW file format, my file sizes are 18+MB each. Not only do you have to consider the software, but your computer will bog down if your CPU and Memory are not adequate to batch process photos. It's a noticeable slowdown in processing time for each photograph. I have an i5 processor w/ 4GB RAM & NVIDIA 360M GPU running Windows 7 in 64Bit mode. I need to upgrade to 8GB RAM. They also upgraded the battery to the EN-EL15 - it's 1900 mAh compared to the 1500 mAh from the En-El3e. It's slightly smaller and lighter, but I liked a heavier camera to offset the weight of big lenses. It's a logical step up from the D90 and D200. There's still room for improvement. There are many features on the D300 that I would like to have, however none of them would give a better picture than the D7000. Ultimately for a photographer that is the most important aspect of a camera - the quality of picture and for that the D7000 wins.

As a long time Nikon user, I bought the D7000 to replace my D90. It is well worth the price. It has some very nice upgrades, and is in my opinion the best camera in its class. I usually keep the Nikon 18-200mm VR on as an all purpose lens, and have had excellent results with it as well as some primes . This is a terrific camera, and does everything I have asked it to. And for those worried about stuck pixels, there is a firmware update available on the Nikon site to correct this problem. I haven't needed to download it, as my camera is perfect. And thank you Best Buy for stepping up on a pricing issue, even though you didn't have to. I am very appreciative.

The D7000 is a spectacular camera. The folks at Nikon have outdone themselves. The feel, the speed, the options, and the quality add up to the finest non-pro camera I've owned. I photograph wildlife - especially birds. This camera works like a champ in all of my field work. Now, if they could just put out a VRII, 80-400mm lens..... Buy this camera if you need professional results without the professional price.

The best camera I have ever bought

5 stars

I have purchased several cameras since the digital tech has come out. I started with a top of the line Kodak as my first digital then moved to a Minolta then to this, the Nikon D7000. This has got to be the best camera I have ever used. It is almost as easy as the other cameras I have had in the past because it does all the work. All I have to do is point and shoot. Being a beginner I had to get used to things such as rapid auto focus and have since learned that I can get the shot I want without waiting on it to focus. I would recommend buying an external flash as the one on board is great for tight rooms or close ups but when you are snapping a picture from a distance in a standard room it could use some extra lighting for best results. The pictures I have taken have been some of the best I have ever taken. I have had several pictures posted in magazines and the pictures I am taking with this surpass those by leaps and bounds. If you are wondering should you spend the money as a beginner photographer then stop asking and just buy it. You will have instant confidence after only a couple of pictures. I did watch a couple of the videos online to bring me up to speed on the camera which helped as well.

I am a licensed Professional Photographer in Los Angeles, California. Always used c---n film cameras. But! I wanted my first DSLR to be a Nikon. After going all over the Internet looking for something I thought I would be comfortable with, all roads sent me to the Nikon D7000. It is full of features or set it up as a point and shoot - just let the camera do everything for you in AUTO Mode. Either way you will enjoy your pictures as never before. It took me a very long time to convert to a DSLR and I am very glad I waited for the D7000 to be built.

I've owned a D70s and a D90 before this, and the D7000 fixes every drawback and missing feature that I've ever longed for in my DSLRs. The camera has a very good size and weight, with the magnesium alloy body structure contributing to its lower-than-expected weight and solid feel. This camera was reviewed by dpreview.com to be as good as the D300s and in some cases even a slightly better unit at a much lower price. There are far too many feature upgrades to list here, but I highly recommend this camera for an extra stretch from the D90 or D5100.

One of Nikon's better efforts in digital cameras.

5 stars

I'm a long time Nikon owner/user. Not a pro but an enthusaist. Using a D80 for several years. Wanted to up grade to a CMOS sensor camera and considered my next move would be to a D90. Waited long enough for the Nikon D7000 and very glad I did. Only had the camera for about 3 weeks so don't have much field work with it as yet. Captured images to date exhibit very high level of sharpness with the 18-105mm kit lens when compared to D80 with the 18-200mm lens. Only negative I see so far is the limit of 3 images for shooting HDR. Nikon should increase that limit to no less than 5 and 9 would be even better. Based on my limited use to date I still would suggest purchasing the D7000 to anyone looking to upgrade from any camera that falls into the casual or enthusiast DSLR classifcation.

Great Camera!!!

5 stars

I used to shot professional before the digital age. I looked for months trying to find the right camera to get back into shooting again. I realize that this is not a "Professional" DSLR, but it's close. I had narrowed it down to this camera, Nikon D90, and the Cannon 7D. It was more expensive then the D90 and less then the 7d. But in my opinion, it blows both of them away. This is the replacement for the D90. It's just as sharp and fast as the 7d and the difference are very slim, do your research! Plus it shoots in 1080p video, if that's needed. The ease of use is very simple with a large LCD screen. The biggest reason why I bought this is the fact that it's a great camera for being on the edge of a Pro outfit. Plus Nikon glass, or lens, are the best. That's why I decided to invest in Nikon. The lens that comes with it, 18-105, is not that great. I would opt for the body only and buy a better lens. But it's not a deal breaker.

This is my first entry in the digital single lens reflex camera market. I do have extensive background in using the older Nikon F cameras, most of which were manual focus. The Nikon 7000D is an amazing camera, and with a little effort on your part you will be taking some absolutely awesome pictures. Most of the photographs have I have taken so far, have been while using the camera on the automatic settings. For the most part, this is the mode that you will use most often. There are manual modes that you can use, and I recommend using the manual settings when the camera does not give you the desired results when using automatically. Manual settings enable you to compose your photographs by setting all or most of the settings. I can't say enough about the 7000D as it has performed flawlessly. I purchased the standard lens that comes with the camera, and an extra 70-300mm lens, with the VR (vibration reduction). Do not buy any lens' for this camera unless they are VR, as they are well worth the extra money. The 70-300 is amazingly fast at focusing and you wont be disappointed. The battery life is amazing, as I shot approximately 400-500 shots (not using the live view option) as I prefer to look through the viewfinder, and hardly lost any battery power. This is the camera to get. If you have a little patience, this is one dynamic camera that you will have for years to come.

I have just begun to explore the depth of the features in this camera. I have experimented with creative lighting control adding two off camera flash units. This works well and is a feature that will grow more useful with experience. The scene modes that are frequently absent from the pro lines are easy to access and very useful in a variety of difficult lighting conditions. The ability to do time lapse photography is a new addition that required a separate accessory on my D90. I did a 24 hour sequence of a flower opening and easily converted to a video clip using Photoshop. Video clips taken with the camera are great and more so now that full time autofocus is available. This camera has a much solider feel than the D90 that I have previously used.

Excellent Camera

I got this Nikon d7000 with the 18-105 lens from a local Best Buy store 2 weeks ago. My last camera was a Canon xTi with a Sigma prime lens and a Sanyo Camcorder for HD video. This Nikon has 2 custom settings called U1& U2 that you can set up any way you want. There are 2 auto white balance options too. The jpg images are excellent with the included lens. A 35 mm f/1.8 Nikon lens lets you shoot in low light and obtain good pictures. The video quality is superb. However you have to set the aperture before switching to the Live view mode. The auto focus and zoom does work during video, but the motor's noises are heard on video unless you use an optional mic plugged into the camera. I had good results with an Azden SX 10 that I previously used on my camcorder. With 2 SD card slots one for photos and one for video, transfer to the computer is easy. Overall I am satisfied with this camera. I also held the CanonT2i and 60D in the Best Buy store. Somehow I preferred the way this camera felt in my hands. Try holding the Canon in the store and purchase whatever feels better in your hands.

Best DSLR on the market for under $5000

5 stars

I've used both Nikon and Canon, including the full-frame, professional, $5000 Nikon D3, the full-frame Canon 5D Mk II, and the smaller-sensor Canon 7D. I was not in the market for a new camera, but "discovered" the D7000 when researching the Canon 7D, which my daughter had recently purchased and I was inclined to purchase myself so we could share lenses. I ended up liking the D7000 more than the Canon 7D (as least as far as the specs go), and ended up going with the Nikon. I've since compared the D7000 with the Canons and the much more expensive Nikon D3, and was very surprised at how good the D7000 really is. No surprise that the D7000 is not quite as good as the Nikon D3. HUGE surprise that it's better than the much more expensive Canon 7D, and except for video quality and sensor size (which affects low light resolution), for still photography in other than low light is at lease as good, and perhaps better than the Canon 5D Mk II which costs twice as much. And it has in-camera wireless flash control, which the 5D lacks, and like all Nikons has much simpler user interface than any Canon. (A huge selling point for me because I don't want to waste time drilling through menu commands when I could be making pictures. A Nikon does with one button what a Canon takes 20 or 30 seconds to do....) Bottom line is I prefer the D7000 to any other DSLR I've used, including the $5000 D3 which is too big/heavy to lug around in the field.

It's hard to avoid superlatives when writing about the D7000. The pictures are superb, the auto settings work almost flawlessly, the pop up flash even works well. I switched from a D70, which was a great camera, but the D7000 takes photography to a level that is unmatched. The camera has terrific low light capability, and since I like taking pictures of kids, the ability to take photos without flash is a real plus. It's fantastic for rapid cycle photos, and the movie mode WITH AUTOFOCUS takes HD videos that (if you can hold the camera still enough) can take advantage of the zoom lens. In short, I can't imagine a better camera. If it were only a little less expensive....

Great camera for the serious amateur...

5 stars

Set aside my Nikon N90 SLR film camera several years ago for the convenience of digital, but couldn't afford a DSLR in the same class. Wanted to get serious about photography again, so ultimately selected the D7000. Nearly purchased the D90, but thought Nikon should be due to come out with a replacement or upgrade. So, I waited and I am glad I did. I would be disappointed if I had gone with D90 and know what I know now about the D7000. The D7000 is solid, well built, comfortable and loaded with features. The top panel display, menus and thumb / finger wheel selectors are similar to the N90, therefore intuitive to me. The back panel menus are comprehensive and simple to navigate. Enjoy learning about and testing all of D7000 features and capabilities. The manual is large, but concise and easy to understand. A few of the buttons on the body are in awkward locations. With time, locating them by feel will become natural. I researched it before I bought it, but was disappointed to find out that my SB-26 flash is not compatible. I didn't buy it for video, nor did video features weigh heavily when deciding on the D7000. However, I do like to capture a few clips now and then and experiment with video editing. A couple of features that put me over the top to wait for the D7000 once it was announced are 1080HD and auto focus in video mode. One thing I did not expect is the sound from the auto focus is picked up by the internal mic. I didn't see this in any reviews I read. The manual does make note of this issue and it supposedly is not a problem when using an external mic. I have not tried an external mic yet. Purchased the D7000 kit with body and 18-105mm zoom lens and also purchased a 70-300mm zoom lens at the same time. Wouldn't have selected the 18-105mm lens if I could have found the body only at the time. Would have put the few $$$ I would have saved toward a fast prime lens (perhaps the new economical 35mm / f1.8 DX lens). If you want to take great pictures, don't care about all of the features and don't have room in the budget for the D7000 the new D3100 would be a good choice. However, if serious about photography, can afford it and desire a pro-sumer camera then go for the D7000, you won't regret it.

Wonderful Camera

5 stars

I am very happy with my purchase of the NIKON D7000. Years ago I had a NIKON 8008 35mm SLR, and it was very easy to adapt to the D7000. It is easy to use straight out of the box, but also offers advanced functionality. The picture quality is exceptional. I especially like the performance in low-light. I have been able to get some nice shots that I wouldn't have been able to get without it. The lens in this kit is very flexible. Covers a large range that previously would have required multiple lenses. I haven't had any lens creep (lens slowly extending while hanging from shoulder) that I have seen other users mention. Overall great camera from NIKON! I would highly recommend this model. Best Buy's Same as Cash promotion also makes it easier to afford!

EXCELLENT DSLR !!

5 stars

I bought this to replace my NIKON D5000. I bought D7000, instead of the new D5100, because of D7000's better features. I'm not am professional photographer, just an avid user. I like this D7000, and it's easy to use even for an amateur like me. Even my son, who uses the Canon 7D, like it better than his own camera, and ask me if he could use it. My 2 sons (who both have the Canon 7D) said the pictures are much better in NIKON D7000, than the Canon 7D, and I could not agree more. And I could use my NIKON D5000 lenses and flash for this D7000 !

I upgraded from a D60 to the D7000. There are alot of button and dials to learn but makes adjustment easer. I would recomend reading the manual first and keep it handy. The original camera had to be exchanged because it was defective ( It would flash "err" after taking a shot. ). I have had no problems with the second camera.

Awesome Camera!

5 stars

Wow. I moved up from my great entry level camera (D60) to the D7000. What a difference! Bigger images and better autofocusing are two of the benefits. For me, the biggest difference is how many frames per second I can shoot. I shoot high school football and wrestling and my D60 would take 4 frames and then need to buffer. You miss a lot of shots that way. On the D7000, I can shoot a dozen easily and I have not really had a need to see how much further it will go. It does take time to figure it out though. You can get decent shots on "Auto", but that's not why you buy a camera like this! Sit down with the manual and learn how to use it. You will not be disappointed!

Price wise it's a little higher than some of the comperable Canon's, but well worth it. The low noise in the higher ISO's is outstanding letting you get some very clear shots in very low light without a flash. Bracketing is limited to 3 frames, it would have been nice to see 5, but at the price point you get a tremendous camera for a high-end consumer price. Battery life is fantastic as well.

Great Camera - Total Value for money

5 stars

This is a great Camera. I did extensive reaserch before buying. Once I decided to buy a DSLR, the choice of brand was clear - Nikon. I narrowed down between the D5100 and D7000. The 5100 was light and has almost all the goodness of 7000 but for some features that one may not use often, unless you are a professional. While it made sense for me to buy the 5100, I didnt want to forgo the extra benefits of the 7000 just for a few hunderd bucks. I do not intend buying another DSLR for the next 5 years and hence the extra investment was worth it. The Camera is outstanding. Contrary to popular belief, it is very easy to use. If you are a beginner you will need about 30 to 60 minutes of reading to start using the camera. If you spend about 3 to 4 hours reading various material, you can use almost all the advanced features of the camera. The photographic abilities of this camera is very impressive and the pictures are just great. I tried various settings and the results were just great. The only downside is the extra weight, but thats a worthy compromise.

A fantastic camera with loads of features.

5 stars

I have owned Nikon cameras and lenses since 1966. Each new camera builds on the features and quality of the previous. The D-7000 has the ability to produce top quality pictures and video and I expect to be taking a lot more pictures in my travels. Having dual storage devices with the ability to store pictures in multiple formats or just to increase the number of pictures taken on assignment gives one great flexibility. The feel and placement of the camera controls give a photographer confidence that the first shot taken will be a winner.

Solid Camera with Great Features

5 stars

I upgraded to this camera after a little over a year with the D3000 and it has its upsides as well as a few downsides: Pros: 16 megapixels is amazing Lighter than the D300s 6 fps 1080 video with continuous autofocus so many more features Cons: Focus system seems slightly off (could just be my camera or the lens) not completely weather sealed I've had this camera for about a little over a month and ive taken almost 2000 pictures and to be honest a lot of them have come out on the soft side. I have asked around in forums and the general consensus is it could be that because there are so many megapixels it makes the pictures so detailed that a tripod needs to be used for shots with shutter speeds under 1/320 of a second. I also have to say that the lens im using could be the problem as well because it is an after market lens that doesnt have great reviews. Overall it's a great camera and well worth the money. I am giving the overall rating as excellent because the AF problem could just be the lens im using.

Big step up!

5 stars

I'm replacing my wonderful Canon 30D with the D7000. Big improvement in picture quality for two reasons. First the D7000 has a two F-stop advantage over the 30D. Pictures with high and low lights come out much better! Also, the VR lens is awesome! I can take pictures down to 1/15s still crystal clear! I only use the HD-video in an emergency when I don't have my video camera. The shape of a DSLR and challenges with smooth zooming make video a challenge. Still, it's nice to have when you need it. I just don't get fancy with too much zooming. Great camera!

Great Camera for novice/pro

5 stars

I bought the 7000 and have used it almost daily for a month. I gotta tell you...I love it, love, love it. I have had the opportunity to compare it to both the 3100 and the 5100 and trust me, the extra money was well worth it. I like the sturdy construction, ease of use (I don't have too look through menus to change commonly used settings), and the picture quality is great. There is a bit of a learning curve bit I picked it up in no time. The only draw back is the the weight (of course because of the construction is more solid) and the focus takes some time to get used to.

Great SLR camera for a beginner

5 stars

This is my first SLR camera and was quite apprehensive about my ability to use it. My fears were quickly laid to rest, this camera is very easy to use and takes wonderful, clear pictures. Took it with me to Beijing and the Philippines; with the excellent battery life and a 16 GB memory card, I took high quality pictures with the ease of a point and shoot without having to download pictures frequently. Love this camera, will be using this for a long time to come.

D7000 better buy than D300

5 stars

I purchased my D7000 on a pricematched sale, so I got an even better deal ($1200 for the kit rather than just the body), but even at $1500, I believe it to be not just a better buy for the money, but a better camera than the D300 ( or the 300s). The 16MP sensor is very nice and takes extremely high-quality pictures. The MP was one area where Canon has always won out, but this new sensor may help to even the field on that score. It has very clean images with minimal noise all the way up to ISO 6400, and the 6FPS shooting rate is very nice. Like all Nikons I have used, it has some difficulty autofocusing in dark conditions and you'll have to switch to manual in some cases to get the shot you want. overall, an extremely nice camera and a nice addition to Nikon's line.

May be the last camera I'll ever have to buy

5 stars

The decision to buy the D7000 was a hard one. First, as this was my first dSLR, should I buy one this expensive/sophisticated? Second, should I choose this or the Canon EOS 60D? In the end, after pouring over every review I could find and asking all of my more proficient friends, the D7000 was the choice. The deciding factor is that the Nikon IS the better "camera" albeit only slightly better. Had video been a high priority, then the Canon would have probably been the choice because of it's better HD capability. With that said, this camera is wonderful. Transitioning from a good P&S to this dSLR has been very easy and I'm taking on more and more of the manual functions every time I go out. This camera does everything well that I can ask of it. My only wish was that the buffer for the continuous shooting mode was larger as you can only shoot for a few seconds at the highest quality/fps mode. If you do buy this camera, invest in one of the new UHS SD cards; you will get more out of the continuous mode. For anyone considering a dSLR, whether it's your first or not, this is a wonderful piece of technology that anyone can use and enjoy. Further, it's an investment that will appreciate as YOU appreciate more and more what it can do. In shopping around exhaustively, I found no prices anywhere in store or online better than Best Buy. I bought the 70-300mm lens package (along with the kit lens, of course) and it was a very good package deal. I later returned and bought the 35mm prime lens. Best Buy had the best price bar none on that lens (net or other retailer) and using one of the frequent BB coupons, it was a steal. And, of course, I got RZ bucks as well. Shop no further.

Easy to use, video is fantastic (go to youtube and type in Nikon d7000 and see a movie made with this camera). What tipped the scale for me was the live action view -many times I use the camera to snap a photo above the heads and it is nice to be able to see the live view ! Beautiful camera!!!

5 stars

This is a brilliant camera. Plenty of features, ease of use, great picture quality, high video resolution, fast, excellent AF and amazing ISO sensitivity. I purchased the D90 initially and then exchanged it for the D7000 and it was the best decision I made. The D7000 is very close to a semi-pro camera but for a mid-range price. I was blown away with this camera and all its features, including the double memory card. In my case, I'm using one for stills and the other for video. The 39 point AF is fantastic and when you incorporate that with the advanced scene modes, it makes shooting easy and all you have to do is focus on that perfect shot. Go into Manual mode and you have some of the most advanced features on the palm of your hand. I highly recommend this camera and this camera has set a new standard for what a mid-range camera should be.

Great semi-pro camera - but a D3100 may be 4 you

5 stars

This camera has many compelling features. I bought it to replace a D300, as it does HD video in addition to stills. This is important to me because I do a lot of underwater photography and I won't have to lug the video cam/housing/lights.... along on my next dive trip -- just the d7000/housing/lights..... :-) It is very similar to the D300 in operation, but has improved access to white balance (button instead of a dial), and the live view is actually useable with virtually no shutter lag (unlike the D300). The Nikon D3100 is a VERY similar camera - differing by an all-plastic body, no Commander flash mode, and no AIS autofocus motor. The last 2 items are why I bought the D7000 over the D3100 -- and the slightly more sensitive CMOS sensor. I bought a D3100 for my wife, who does not care about these differences. The only thing I don't like about the D7000 is that AF is only either AE-L/AF-L or on shutter release - not both :-( If you don't know what this means it will not bother you! There's a great review of U/W capabilities here: http://wetpixel.com/i.php/full/field-review-nikon-d7000-and-nauticam-na-d7000 The kit lens (18-105) is very useful. Pretty good optics and VR. The mount is plastic, but looks strong. I'm replacing it with a nikon 18-200 VR to get the extra range. I've shot a few pix with the 18-105 and it's comparable to any of the super-zooms in image quality. Altogether an A+, but I wish it was offered with the 18-200!

This camera is amazing. The best Nikon camera yet

5 stars

I am an avid Nikon user and have several Nikon cameras. This one is my least expensive and is by far the best camera Nikon has made. It is lightweight, crisp and easy to use. The only reason I gave it 4 stars for features is that it is bit slow to cycle when you are using the popup flash and you have to be careful because it can slip out of auto into S or A or M really easily. Hands down, this is a great camera.

The Nikon D7000 is a great camera.

5 stars

I finally retired my old Nikon (film) SLR for a new Nikon digital SLR. If cost were no object, I would have gone for the Nikon D700 since I had wanted a full frame digital SLR. However, the D7000 was an excellent compromise. It has lots of features, some of which are better than the D300 (which has been on the market for a few years now). I like that the camera has slots for 2 memory cards. Until I get up-to-speed with all the features of the D7000, it can easily be used as a simple "point and shoot" type camera. One nicety is that I can even use some of my older Nikon lenses with it - which is one of the reasons I have owned Nikon cameras for more than 20 years. They haven't changed their lens mount, and that allows you to attach and use older lenses with a new camera. While not all features of the camera can be used with an older lens, you at least have the use of your old lenses and don't have to spend lots of extra $$$ to have the additional lens capabilities.

I was expecting better from Nikon

4 stars

Maybe I'm spoiled by the design of the Sony a900, but I was expecting Nikon's design and ease of use to be at least on par with the Sony. I purchase the Nikon D7000 for my wife because I wanted her to have a light weight dslr. The bigger sensor and the high ISO Nikon processing engine was what I also liked. It has nice ergonomics. It's built well. I find the live view interesting. I find the viewfinder graphics and visual controls to be too small for my taste. And the button set up is definitely inferior to the Sony a900. The printed guide came in two languages: Spanish and English. My wife really enjoyed the camera because the results pleased her. I'm glad I selected the Nikon and feel it's a good value. But for my taste I'm going to stick to the Sony dslr. Nikon did not win me over.

Excellent Camera, Excellent Video, Awesome (BUT)!!

5 stars

This camera is awesome in every way. The pictures are amazing and the video is crystal clear. But just like many many many other people I have the pixel issue. Mine is not as bad as others. I have a green pixel located on the lower left of my screen. You might say the pixels are not that big of a deal. They are. They show up in your video and it is very annoying. But I cannot knock the quality of the pictures or video WOW! To test if your d7000 has the pixel issue keep your lens cap on and turn on live view. Look closley at the display and look for green, red, or blue dots. More than likely they are there but you have to look close. Nikon needs to fix this issue because as of right now Best Buy has a ton of open box D7000 (lol). Again you will not be dissapointed in any way with the quality of your pics or video. If you get a D7000 without any dead pixels great. But like I said it is a major bug in this first batch of cameras. Looks like Im going to add to the pile of open box D7000. :( Thank you

WORTH EVERY PENNY!

5 stars

The Nikon D7000 is only my 3rd DSLR after owning a D200 & the D300. What a difference! It is light, fast, great in low light, so simple to use. The pictures I make with the D7000 simply look better than what I've ever gotten with any other digital camera. The effects are subtle, but as a prolific photographer, I see that the colors are simply better, especially under difficult light under which my D300 just doesn't look as good. The D7000 has the highest linear resolution of any Nikon DSLR, and more overall resolution than any other Nikon under $7,500. The Nikon D7000 has technical performance better than every other Nikon DSLR priced under $7,500, and handles better than any Nikon DSLR, regardless of price. As I continue using this camera I am sure I will find more great things about it. Consequently, I will also probably find things that can be improved upon. But at this time I am glad I made this investment.

Bad Pixels & Bad Nikon Service

2 stars

Waited a long time for this camera. Investing $1200 is a major decision for me. Purchased on 10/14/10. After playing and experimenting for a few days I noticed red and blue pixels in some stills and all videos. I figured no sense in returning I'll just have Nikon remap and be on my way. After a few emails between myself and Nikon and submitting sample pictures and videos to them I was instructed to send the camera to them for service. Sent to Nikon Service on 11/1/10 and they received 11/3/10. On 11/12/10 I left for vacation (bought the camera for this trip but oh well) convinced I would have a great camera upon return. The camera was returned to my mothers house at my instruction while I was on vacation. Picked it up yesterday. Included with my camera was a form letter stating they had checked it out and it was opeating properly and they WERE NOT ABLE TO DUPLICATE MY PROBLEM. I turned the camera on, turned on Live View and there were my red and blue pixels. If you buy this camaera and it has problems return it to BB do not depend on Nikon to fix it. Been using Nikon equipment for over 30 years but feel I just got ripped off for $1500.00 . Past the return period and Nikon says they can't duplicate the problem - useless for video because of this.
