FujiFilm FinePix W3 3D

You cannot deny the 3D revolution. It is not limited to your television or to Hollywood blockbuster films shown in IMAX. 3D technology is also in your digital camera.

Most camera brands in the market now offer 3D cameras, 3D camcorder, even water cameras are going 3D. One camera brand to promote the 3D trend in its camera is Fuji.

Fuji introduced the Real 3D W3 point and shoot digicam.

The Fuji 3D camera has a 10 megapixel CCD image sensor and 3x optical zoom lens.

For its 3D function the Fuji Real 3D W3 uses a new “Real Photo Processor 3DHD”. The Real 3D W3 technology, effective in its purpose, just proves that 3D cameras are no longer gimmicky gadgets. You can actually take 3D photos and view it in your 3D HDTV.

Aside from its 3D camera feature, it also has basic video capability – 720p 3DHD video. It has stereo surround which is applicable for both 2D and 3D videos.

Fuji has designed several shooting modes which is a great way to utilize the 2 lenses. These modes are for shooting 3D images as well as the conventional 2D images.

How Fuji Real 3D W3 works…

The Fuji 3D camera works in such a way that the camera shoots 2 images which are slightly varying in points of view. The distance is approximately calculated as the distance of your eyes apart. The 3D camera’s images are then saved in a multi-picture format called MPO, which is a format for 3D capture. The user can also choose to save the photo in JPEG format.

The 3D image is then shown at the specially designed LCD screen. Each eye sees a different image in the LCD. The result is that users are seeing the image in the same way that one would see it without the camera, two perspective at the same time. Your brain then puts the two images together creating that depth we know as 3D.

Creativity in 3D Cameras

Shooting 3D images allows for more creative shots. What is great about the Fuji Real 3D W3 is that it also serves as a normal 2D camera. There are several creative shooting modes which is focused on just shooting 3D images and making use of the two lenses at the same time.

There is a tele/wide mode which allows for the Fuji Real 3D W3 to capture same images at both ends of the zoom range. This allows the 3D camera to take images with a view of the scene as well as the close up image of the subject.

There is also a feature called two color shooting which allows users to capture two images a varying image color settings.

Another shooting mode is called the 2 sensitivity mode. The mode allows the 3D camera to get images which have different sensitivity.

Handling and control

The thing with the Fuji Real 3D W3 is that it is not different, in terms of handling, from the average point and shoot camera. The size is a bit bulkier but not bothersome. When you hold the camera one thing that you have to get used to is that there are two lenses which are positioned apart. It can be somehow difficult to handle it with one hand. You also have to be conscious that your hands would not block the lenses on both sides of the camera.

Viewing and Framing

The LCD used in the Fuji Real 3D W3 is a 3.5 inch 1.16 million dot Lenticular screen. It utilizes microscopic lenses which allow you to see different images with each eye, which is basically what makes the 3D effect. The screen also an amazing bright color that reproduces vivid colors in basically all kinds of lighting condition.

Outdoor Image Quality

We were impressed when we saw outdoor images sample of the Fuji Real 3D W3! We really loved it. The more time you spent using this 3D camera the better and faster your brain translates the images and pop right at you.

2D Image Quality

Well, what can you expect but to be less excited about the 2D images of the Fuji 3D camera. The 2D function produces dependable exposure though.

Portrait Shooting

Portrait shooting with the 3D camera is such a trip! It really is fun! The face detection feature works and takes sharp, well exposed, realistic colors. You do have to shoot in good lighting to avoid noise in the images.

The price tag for the Fuji Real 3D W3 is US $500.

So what is our bottom line? 3D camera technology is not a fad and it is here to stay. 3D cameras are something to be excited about. The Fuji Real 3D W3 is a fun 3D camera that’s impressive more than it is gimmicky. Get the Fuji Real 3D W3 if you want to shell out a bit of cash and if you have a 3D TV at home. We love how this camera takes photography to another level of fun.

Great digital stereo camera, with some limitations

4 stars

I had been using twin camera rigs and beam splitters for years to get stereo images. I have used the W3 for three weeks now. This camera greatly simplifies capturing 3D stills AND 3D HD video. I do not have a use yet for the video, but the market is trending that way, so I am ahead of that curve. The real-time 3D view screen is impressive and wows subjects and by-standers. The 3D images are captured in an .mpo format and the camera can be set to simultaneously capture a 2D jpeg. I have not made any enlargements from any of the files, so I cannot speak to that. However, using StereoPhotoMaker (SPM), I have prepared side-by-side stereo images easily. Image quality and color rendition is more than adequate for this format. Color rendition in mixed lighting scenarios is somewhat poor compared to other high end point & shoot cameras, but a good photo editor can probably correct most color errors. The Fuji software provided did not seem to add anything that Photoshop or SPM did not already do, so I do not use it. The camera itself seems well made, although the sliding door/on-off switch may bring problems over time - it seems like a weak point to combine those functions. There is trigger delay to deal with, but consider you are really working with two separate lenses and sensors. Control knobs and buttons are well laid out and feel responsive. I recommend thorough reading of the expanded manual to determine how to engage all the features. The built in flash seems a little weak, even at 5-10 feet. However, it will fire before fully charged, so that probably accounts for some of the underexposures. The greatest limitation I have found is the absence of a hot shoe or pc (photo) connection. The camera can be set manually to expose properly with external flash or strobes, but I have not found a reliable lighting trigger yet, although I haven't explored all my options yet and I think an adequate system can be developed. All in all, I would recommend this camera for 3D fans and those just starting in 3D. I will use this as my daily carry around camera, so I bought the extended service agreement from Best Buy for $100 for 3 years. More occasional or light users may not need that.

returned camera

2 stars

The shots when looking in the Camera were awesome. Very 3D BUT the prints (I purchased this camera for Picture Prints) at $6.99 for a 5X7 were not very 3D. I took a picture of my 2 dogs and everyone who looked at the Viewfinder said WOW! When I showed the prints, the comment changed to what happened. I tried e-mailed Fuji to discuss twice and never heard anything SO I returned camera. Really wanted this camera and was very disappointed.

Great toy - and good camera too

5 stars

This camera would be a good little camera even if it didn't have the 3d feature, but with that, it's a wonderful toy. So much fun to be able to create 3d images of things that would be mundane otherwise. And for things not otherwise mundane, it adds a whole new dimension (literally) to your images!
