Still Life photography tips

Apache still life. c.1907 by Edward S. Curtis.

Still life arrangements have inspired painters throughout time and the same inspiration provides photographers with numerous creative opportunities. Photographers must peep through their digital SLR cameras and try to find things in their day-to-day lives that can be turned to amazing still life photos.

It just takes discipline and a few still life photography tips to hone our eyes into seeing an existing inanimate object as a work of art.

Before pressing that shutter on your digital SLRs ask these 6 questions…

1. Should you use flash or natural available light? Remember that lighting is a major key in turning everyday object in amazing still life photography

2. Scrutinize the accessible light for any creative elements: does a shaft of light fall at just the right angle?

3. Which angle would look the most excellent for the still life shot? Imagine the arrangement in the centre of a circle. Stand at a certain distance from the object and walk around them slowly, stopping at regular intervals. Every pause provides a new visual angle and a different shot.

4. Which viewpoint? Consider the arrangement from eye level, as well as from above and from below.

5.Every visual angle provides a different background: which one is the most suitable and complements the objects most effectively?

6. Consider the depth of field: should the background be sharp or blurred?
