If you’re a fan of digicams that run on AA batteries then the latest Canon Powershot SX130 IS if for you.

The PowerShot SX130 is a point and shoot camera with a 12x superzoom feature. Aside from this it has a 12. 1 megapixel sensor and records HD movies. It has a 3 inch LCD. This camera has standard features and offers the AA battery option as the factor that sets it apart.

Canon mentioned in its press release that “The 12x optical zoom ranges from wide angle (28mm) to telephoto (336mm), making the camera equally ideal for wide-angle group shots and taking on sightseeing trips.

Canon’s integrated optical Image Stabilizer offers a three-stop advantage, making it easier to take great shots in low light with long exposures, and reducing the blur associated with camera-shake when shooting distant subjects at the telephoto end of the zoom.”

“Any member of the family can achieve great results thanks to a range of intelligent shooting features and creative modes. With Easy Mode, the camera becomes the perfect point-and-shoot, with most buttons disabled and icons removed from the screen to make it easier to compose and capture the best possible shot, without worrying about settings.

Smart Auto with Scene Detection Technology identifies up to 28 different shooting conditions, automatically adjusting the settings to produce the best possible result. Smart Flash Exposure controls flash levels according to shooting conditions, providing the right amount of flash to ensure perfectly exposed shots in all situations, from dimly lit rooms to bright sunlight. ”

Canon has not announced the price for this camera but it will come out this September.

Amazing Picture

4 stars

My first impression of the camera since I just bought it today...if you want a camera that you can point, shoot, and expect the flash to fire automatically this is not the camera for you. This is how the flash works. If you pop the flash up and it needs it, it will fire. If you don't pop the flash up when it's needed, the camera tells you to open up the flash. So I will be in the habit of opening the flash up every time I believe the camera needs it so I don't lose my shot. If you can get over that particular detail, the camera takes incredibly detailed pictures with jaw dropping clarity. For a point and shoot camera, I have never seen such clarity. Even at full zoom the picture clarity is excellent! Video quality is nice, sound seems to be a bit on the low side.

I love the camera. It has such a much clearer than my old Nikon Cool Pix. Of course that camera was much cheaper, but with my tremor, I really appreciate the blur reduction feature.

Great camera but the Flash recharge

5 stars

This camera is very good at taking pictures. Image quality is awesome. zooming in on pictures of yourself you will see your pores on the skin. No grainy pictures here. The controls and features are simple and not buried into the menu system like the canon sd4000 or sd4500. HD movie is 720p and it looks great, image stabilization for movie is awesome. For those who have SLR, you can also manually set ISO, shutter speed, aperture, white balance, exposure on this baby also. The zoom on this camera is over the top. Amazing pictures! Camera takes AA batteries which is no big deal since i just use Sanyo Eneloop rechargeables. But the one big problem with this camera is the flash recharge time. OMG! it takes a whole 7 seconds to recharge and allow you to take another picture if the flash was full power. 3 seconds if the flash was at minimal power. The camera is great at automatically adjusting the flash level so pictures aren't over- or under-exposed. But 7 seconds to recharge is so ridiculous and I am not making a big fuss about having to manually flip the flash up. Thats why I didn't give this camera a 5 star. Still thinking of returning it or not.

good still images, choppy video defeats HD

2 stars

Pros: --image resolution --wide angle and zoom range Cons: --slow shot-to-shot --choppy video renders very unpleasing HD --battery life I was basically buying its HD video feature which was very disappointing due to low bit rate (~3 mb/sec?). Useless, returned.

Very similar to previous camera, easy to use

5 stars

Very similar to previous camera, easy to use although I had a little trouble holding steady with zoom first time I used the camera at a function because I have a lot of arthritis in my right hand - not the camera's fault, and I've learned to overcome it. I particularly like that I can get clear focus with close up shots

Good Camera;Grainy at times

5 stars

When I first got this camera i loved it. It was great for myself beginning in photography. Ive had it for a a few months now and its still pretty good. Battery life; i replace my batteries literally every hour. if you buy this camera you better get rechargable batteries too. Quality; i use for macro pictures. Its really good. Pictures of people arent too good. they are grainy and soft and not that great. I can zoom in all the way to 48x and ill have amazing quality photos still. Use; fairly easy to use. many modes. I especially like SCN mode and the fish bowl effect. Quite honestly im getting tired of this camera being grainy[noise]. Otherwise its a perfect, easy to use camera.

I had recently purchased the SX130 and although the camera had excellent zoom, I thought the picture quality was just OK! I ended up going with the Canon G12 which is AMAZING and it's much lighter and smaller.

Best-in-class

5 stars

I've had Sony cybershots and other Powershots from Cannon but this one stands out for its exceptional Night snaps and HD quality video and sound capturing. You'll be amazed how much you can zoom in without losing any quality. We could capture just the face of the security guard on top of white house from Washington monument. Only thing it misses is Lithium-ion battery. This could be a positive for some people. Its simply the best option if you don't want to spend big bucks for SLRs

Great camera but is a bit hard to hold

4 stars

Just received this camera love the zoom lens, takes great pictures but it is a bit hard to hold onto and use the telephoto lever and push the button to shoot. Bigger then I expected not a pocket camera. Quick response time although flash is a bit slow. Wish it came with rechargable batteries. So much nicer then the Sony I just returned.

Nothing but problems

5 stars

I have owned 2 versions of this camera. The first one had to be fixed 3 times with in 1 year and then Best Buy finally said it wasn't worth fixing and gave me a credit for a new one. I bought the newer version because I really liked the features on this camera, especially the zoom. I have had the newer version for 1 year and it's now been fixed 4 times!!!! I had hoped my first model was just a lemon but clearly it wasn't just that camera. I am very disappointed as I've missed many moments I've wanted to capture of my kids. Every time It's been fixed I've had to wait at least 2 weeks to get it back which is a long time to be with out a camera. I would NOT recommend this camera to anyone despite it's great features and ease of use.

I love this camera.

4 stars

Easy to use the basic features, I haven't delved into the additional features yet. The picture quality is amazing, especially for zoomed in shots. The only issues I had were that the batteries run out pretty quickly (after about 8 hrs of use), and in the sun it was hard to see what I was taking a picture of because of the glare.

Good pictures, touchy to hold and carry

3 stars

I have had many Canon cameras and this replaces one I dropped and broke recently (a PowerShot A2000 IS). This one takes excellent pictures and the functions are much like the PowerShot A2000 so it was easy to load the batteries (two AA batteries) and start shooting. Since this model is about 1/3 heavier than the old one (even still using only two AA batteries) I found it a bit cumbersome at first given the fact that there is a minimal finger grip on the front to help balance the camera while taking shots. But the most annoying feature of this otherwise nice camera is the large, and almost protruding, on/off button on top. It is on the same side as the strap so when I pull it out of the case I more often than not trigger it to turn on. Since the lens pops out right away I don't want it getting snagged in the case. If I don't have it in a carry case and am just holding it I can often trigger it to go on just by brushing against that button. An easy way to jam the lens, I think. A better design would be to have the on/off button smaller and/or more recessed. The button is right behind the zoom function button and can also be set off when reaching blindly to adjust that. It will teach me to look for a better design the next time. Canon let me down on this one.

Feature rich, but some setbacks

4 stars

This is basically a good camera for the price. Has features up the ying-yang, probably more that I will use. Therein lies one of the setbacks: 1. Too many bizaar functions like self timer wink mode. Less bells and whistles would have left room for finetuning other useful features, like increasing rapid picture mode from 1 frame/second to 3 or 4. 2. Don't look for help from Canon customer service. All they do is quote from the user manual something that is in the general vein of your question, without actually answering your question directly. 3. The zoom quality is great, but cumersome to use while setting up your shot. 1x to 12x in under 2 seconds. Slow it down a little! 4. This thing eats batteries. You need two carrying cases; one for the camera and a second for the batteries. 5. Steady shot only seems to work if you hold the camera perfectly steady. But all in all I like the camera. When around other point

Great camera for anybody

5 stars

I have been using this camera for a couple months now, and I am loving it. Pictures come out crisp and clean, and the different modes are easy to use. I love being able to shoot video in 1080p, but the downside is the camera saves them in .mov format which creates huge files. On the picture side, they are saved in .jpg format instead of raw. Even though both modes are fine with me, I like the raw format better. Overall this is a good camera for anybody and is worth the buy.

Best Camera I've Ever Had!!!!

5 stars

The quality of this camera is just simply amazing! The day I received it I had pretty much everything you need to know figured out within less than an hour without even reading the user manual. This camera takes amazing shots. One night it was lightening pretty bad outside so I set the shutter speed low and got some amazing pictures of the lightening. It would've been impossible to do with a camera that doesn't have the TV mode. This camera has a firework mode and tonight I took some awesome pictures of fireworks on that mode

Some awesome features, with 1 or 2 drawbacks

5 stars

An awesome mid-range camera with all the manual adjustments you might want a step above point-and-shoot. Vivd colors, nice continuous shooting, aperture and f/stop adjustments - all easy to understand and use. The drawbacks? -Very demanding of battery life, no matter what the settings (Camera tells you you can shoot over 300 shots with fresh batteries; after perhaps 50 or so I start getting low-battery warnings. Fortunately, it doesn't actually get really low until after 120 or so, but that's FAR from 300+..) -Wheel for changing some settings, particularly ISO and f/stop, is poor design - I am constantly accidentally activating continuous shots, flash, and other settings -Telephoto clarity leaves something to be desired -Macro on this camera isn't even half of what my Canon point-and-shootSD550 Overall, I'm giving this a 4 out of 5 for versatility, quality, and ease of use.

Beware of one Thing! Video format is .mov mot Win

2 stars

This entire line of camers is awesome, I have owned the 110 and 120 but wanted to go up to the 720P capability of the 130, as I use it mostly for video. The format of the video changed to .mov and the video's output will not play on Windows Media Player, Quick time player or another player is needed.

Great non DSLR camera

5 stars

If you are looking for a non Digital SLR camera that is capable of point and shoot plus a little more than this is the perfect camera. I love having control over the settings for taking my pictures but don't want to be burdened down by the size of a DSLR or having to manually set every single shot. I also wanted to stay under $200 in my price point. Photos: I have tested this camera in dim light, indoors, and snow. I have taken pictures of plant life, humans and scenery and also used the macro modes. My favorite mode to use is the P (programmable) mode. While the portrait mode may take the most optimized photos of humans the programmable mode is the most versatile one and can be adjusted on the fly with just a few clicks of buttons. The colors come out almost perfect and when applying color correction in Photoshop really required no or very little adjustment and looked great prior to altering it. The synchronized flash fills the room just right and never overpowers the shots. I was able to take a picture of the Christmas tree with the lights on and showing properly in the picture using it. The 10x optical zoom takes flawless photos and captures amazing details and I love the fact that you can turn off the digital zoom so that it is never accidentally used. Video: I tested with one 30 second clip outdoors in the snow. The color was great, the sound it picked up impressed me and zooming I and out generated no noise in the video and appeared seamless.

I bought this camera as a gift to myself and I am glad I did. I also purchased recharable batteries as the salesman said they will last longer. The picture quality is very clear and the camera itself is easy to use. I first read the instructions and tried each setting before I used it at Christmas. I am glad I did as I have some really good pictures. I like the fact it has many manual settings and the LCD screen is very clear. Overall, this camera is well worth buying. I don't use this type of camera for movies, I always use my camcorder as that is what they are made for.

Great Camera, Slightly Big, but Worth It

4 stars

When we bought this camera, we had gone through a number of the small, pocket sized digitals, and didn't have any success in getting both picture quality and small camera size. I convinced my wife that a little bigger camera could make the difference, and with Canon optics and operation, it has worked out well. We bought the camera just before Christmas so it would be available for the grandkid's opening their presents. It took great pics without a bunch of manual reading, and then after reviewing the manual, even better.

Good Camera for the price

4 stars

I have been considering purchasing a dslr camera after owning a standard point and shoot camera. After talking to some photo enthusiast they suggested I try an in between camera, with point and shoot capabilities but with manual adjustments and good zoom as well. So I was browsing the camera section at best buy and this camera happened to be on sale and with Christmas coming up with many photo ops I decided to purchase it. I must say I am not sorry I did the colors and clarity with this camera are more then satisfying, and the auto mode for when my wife (Who is not a shutterbug) wants to use it is great with plenty of settings for me to play with to try to get the best shot possible. I got some great shots of my 10 month old grand daughter that I was able to get 8x10's made from that look as good as most studio's would do. the large mega pixel's is a definite plus. I will be giving this camera to my wife in the future, when I do move up to a dslr camera but until then I am getting a lot of enjoyment out of it.. The only issue I have with it is the shutter rest time is a bit slow for taking a burst of pictures. Movie quality is pretty good.

Great pics during the day, poor with low light or indoors and its a little slow. Doesn't focus well with moving objects. A little bulky and uses a lot of battery! Be prepared to pack lots of extras. Has a great zoom and lots of features. A good camera but i would recommend spending $50 extra for the Nikon 8100. i returned mine and was happier with the Nikon.

Great pics, but drains batteries almost instantly!

1 stars

I have taken less than 100 pictures, and 3-5 SHORT videos, and have used up 3 sets of batteries!. The first two came with the camera. Dead almost immediately. The second two were lithium for electronic devices, including cameras. The third two were lithium rechargables that I purchased at the time I bought the camera for this specific use. They were recommended by the clerk in the store. I really can't figure out what the problem is and am about to return the camera. I am using a higher quality SD card. Could that be the problem? Is this camera designed only for the standard quality cards? I need some answers quickly, before I return this camera. I had a Cannon 420 which I loved. Unfortunately, I dropped it and jammed the lens. I would go back to it in a heartbeat if it were possible.

I loved my Canon Rebel film camera but because film is basically obsolete I decided to buy a cheaper version of a Canon digital point and shoot but wanted to step it up a bit. Although I have yet to learn all the features, one thing is certain, it eats batteries like a teenager with a bag of chips in front of the TV. I always take at least 4 extra batteries for back up. A wall adapter would be nice when I am staying put to shoot. It is very slow coming back after a shot and you have to wait for the flash

My husband is a professional Photographer and is very tough on cameras. He only shoots with Canon cameras and bought this for me so I know it's a good all around camera. He occasionally grabs it to snap a pic or two around the house. I haven't heard him complain once. It was very easy to learn how to use it, though I haven't used all ht e features yet.

I bought the SX130 for my mother who has had trouble using digital cameras, and had quite taking pictures for that reason. She is enjoying the camera very much, and is taking pictures again. She especially likes the zoom, because she can take a picture without the person knowing.

good camera but not great

4 stars

This camera took pretty nice pictures, but I found a 3 second lag between each photo and if you take a picture with the flash you have to wait for the flash to recharge + the 3 sec. lag. This is more than likely due to the fact that it runs on 2 AA's, which I was hesitant on in the first place but decided to give it a chance. Also if you're looking for a lightweight, stick in your pocket kind of camera this really is not it. It's rather bulky and heavy. Like I said the pictures come out nice and colors are bright and the zoom is great. Just don't expect to get crystal clear pics if you zoom in past 9/10. Returned this camera after 3 weeks and purchased a nikon instead.

I wanted a camara I could take to the game a get a good zoom of the players (well, cheerleaders) and also shoot video. This is perfect. Not too bulky so it's easy to carry around and take to the beach. This camara is good for casual use, however, it has a lot of features that you will have to read the manual and play around with them to learn how to use them. I have only used point and shoot camaras before so I don't usually mess around with all the features. Contrary to what some people have said, I have been able to zoom during video shooting, The only dissappointment was that it does not shoot good at night. Not as good as I thought it would be

4 stars

After having a Canon A610 I thought I'd love this camera but for the short time I've had it I'm not thrilled with it. It does take great looking pictures and the image stabilization is nice and the zoom is great. However in low light settings, in Auto mode, it wants to go to 800 or 1600 ISO to soon which I don't want as there is too much noise in the picture at this high of an ISO. Also after taking some pictures and you go to review them a lot of them for some odd reason get shown, and uploaded to your computer, in portrait view vice landscape view when they were taken in landscape. Very annoying.

If you are looking for a weekend pocket camera to take action shots of your child sporting events...this is not it. Shutter speed slow and pictures are blurry even in manual mode with all settings at max. Good for still shots and landscapes, lots of features for those. Like the cannon products, but this has not been my favorite.

Fantastic-BUT

5 stars

Some folks want a camera that they can grip well and the size of the SX130 gives them that. The 12x zoom(with wide angle, too) and the big screen are great. All of the smart auto features Canon packs in the camera are wonderful. BUT alkaline AA's are lucky to last a 100 shots, what with flash, review, video...etc. You must use NiMH rechargeables OR the Energizer AA Lithium 8x batteries to get a shot count in the 300+ range. Great camera.

Poor Camera, Blurred pictures if subject is moving

5 stars

I am disappointed in Canon. I was looking forward to the 12x optical zoom feature.Though the camera did not have the ability to take a picture and not be blured if someone was moving. I tried in auto, manual, flash and non flash modes. If someone was walking, waving, or opening Christmas presents the moving parts were blurred. If there was no movement the picture was great, crisp, true colors, but I live in a real world where people and nature move. Therefore I returned the camera back to Best Buy. Will start researching for a new camera now that my Christmas and vacation trip are over. Won't be rushed into making a snap judgement and buying a camera I won't be happy with.

A very clever camera and the video feature functions flawlessly. I can take 3 hours of 640x480 movie with one set of rechargeable batteries and a high-speed 16GB SD memory chip. The only limitation is that one movie can't be more than 4GB large, so every 45-50 minutes you need to stop and restart the move.

5 stars

This camera is incredible! I don't use any settings other than manual, but that works great. Great ISO and shutter speed range makes it easy to take pictures in any lighting and get any effect you need or want. The aperture settings are a little odd, where the camera might not let you go to the highest or lowest settings depending on what the ISO and shutter speed are set at, but every camera with manual settings I have ever owned have been like that. A lot of cameras when you get into a higher ISO get very grainy, but this stays pretty clear even at 1600. It gets awesome detail both up close and at a distance, and accurate color quality. I tested out the video setting, and the picture is clear with decent sound quality (definitely better than most cameras). I am so happy with this camera and would recommend it to anyone!

I purchased this as a gift for my father because I was very impressed with the optical zoom and other features. Upon receiving the camera however, I was fairly surprised to discover that this camera takes AA batteries, which are rated to provide (at most) 130 pictures. I wasn't even aware that there were digital cameras on the market today that do not have their own rechargeable battery - and I certainly feel that 130 pictures is far less than I would expect out of one battery charge (or replacement, as it were in this case). Moral of the story is, I took this camera back and we're now looking at other options.

My job in my school club is to be the historian and take photos of our events. In light, of this position, I decided to purchase a new camera that was not as expensive as a Digital SLR but something that could take better quality pictures than a regular point and click. I have to say that this has to the the perfect camera that I was looking for. Pros: Face recognition, Easy shot mode, programmable modes, high quality photos. Cons: Uses AA batteries instead of a Lithium battery (I would find it a bit easier to use this camera if it could be run off a lithium battery but to be honest, the camera's features completely outweigh the fact that you might have to change out the batteries)

Good, BUT....

Not a bad camera, great zoom, good price, lots of megapixels for cropping, but my main complaint is focus. Lots of pictures out of focus. The problem is you don't know it until you download pictures. The camera locks in focus and beeps, but sometimes is not good enough. Another complaint is lack of viewfinder. Big screen but is hard to see in bright sunlight. Battery life seems a bit shorter than it should be. I would be willing to pay a bit more and get a camera that can autofocus better.

Point and Shoot or Play with Settings, you choose!

4 stars

i purchased this camera as a point and shoot alternative to my canon digital slr. I am happy that i chose it. This camera can definitely be your "go to" - it uses standard AA batteries (get the rechargeable batteries - they last much longer than standards). It has a large LCD and the dial for settings is easy to work with. The picture quality is wonderful! Why did i give it just 4 stars? The auto-focus is a little tetchy in digital zoom - those features do not seem to want to play nicely with each other. It is a little longer to process each picture than some other point and shoot cameras I've used. BUT.... overall the positives are far more important than the negatives. This camera is a little bigger than the credit card size that is so popular - but i like the weight of it in my hands. The LCD is easy to see in bright outdoor light (taking pictures in snow was my test). It has HD video and the zoom operates while taking a video! I would have prerferred a different format to .mov, but that is easily remedied. If you want to just grab this camera and go - point and shoot on auto takes a great photo. If you want to play with ISO speeds, Apertures and macro, you can do that with this model too. If you are on the fence, go for it! You won't be sorry with this camera!

Overall happy with the camera. Read reviews prior to purchase, and one I recall mentioned the delay it takes for the flash to recharge/ready for next pic. I thought "...no biggie". Well...with new grandchild in the house...I'm missing shots left and right. Outdoors, Pics, Movies, 12x Zoom...AWESOME! ...but would not recommend this if you do Flash photography.

Overall, a very good travel zoom camera

5 stars

Picture quality appears to be very good. The 12x optical zoom works well and the optical image stabilization seems to handle the typical "shakes" that occur from holding a camera. Flash appears to have okay reach for a pop-up flash. Camera has many features and I have appreciated the option of using manual controls. I do wish Canon included a full paper/printed manual rather than a manual on CD, although the Quick Start Manual covers the basics. I lament the demise of the optical viewfinder....my only significant disappointment with this camera. Overall, I am very pleased with this camera.

Canon PowerShot SX130 IS 12.0-Megapixel Digital Ca

2 stars

Its a good camera, it had everything I needed, but it had one flaw. This camera instead of having the regular squared batteries for cameras, it took 2 AA batteries. The amount of megapixels for the camera is too high in 12.0 so AA batteries will die often. It would be better for this camera to have the regular batteries. Also when I bought the camera, it did not include a memory card, which I thought it was foolish.

Under dark light, it's better put under "P" (program) mode rather than auto, and use ISO 1600. Many people saying battery life is short, but I have been using it for half year, with 1600 x 1200 pictures (my favorite resolution for daily/travel photos) I take 95% of time, I shoot more than 300 photos (including ~10 1 or 2 min testing videos ) with the battery it come with the camera. I also found Canon previouse model don't have date print on photo features, so I didn't buy Canon, but this model has this feature. High resolution video does have focus constantly out problem, but if you use normal resolution video, this problem will be much less shown.

Best camera available for the novice/amatuer user

5 stars

We were looking for a camera that had an above average zoom and shot HD video. We settled on this camera due to it's price and features. Our daughter cheers high school varsity and this camera has been great at capturing those once in a lifetime moments. The battery life if excellent, when using rechargeable batteries. The zoom is great and the HD video is awsome, with great sound. One of the negatives is that the flash is not automatic. The camera notifies you when it is needed and you must manually raise the flash. There is also a considerable delay between shots when using the flash. Something to think about if you need to be able to take mutiple shots in succession very quickly. It sometimes takes up to 7 seconds between shots. If you need a professional camera, this isn't it. But, if you are looking for a camera that fits the needs of the amatuer photographer, this is a great buy. Also, the manual is on CD only. Read if thouroughly, since you can't have it with you when you need it. A manual in book form would be nice. We are very satisfied with our purchase.

Replacement for my Nikon L100

5 stars

I started taking photography classes and chose a Nikon L100 as my starter camera, however it didn't have any type of manual settings. I have since replaced it with this Canon SX130 and have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the, Tv, Av, and Manual settings, available on this camera. I have read several reviews which complain about the flash and the lag between shots. I have not had this problem. I picked up some strong rechargeable batteries and do NOT use the flash. The use of the Manual settings has come in handy for that purpose. I can set the shutter speed, ISO and aperture and continue to take indoor photos of my very active 5 year old, without worrying with blur and no white outs from a flash. But in the case where I may absolutely need a flash there is the ability to adjust the flash output and flash exposure. I haven't used the video setting yet but I tend to carry a small Canon digital camcorder with me, so video on my digital camera is not a necessity. I would recommend this camera to anyone looking for the ability to choose manual settings without the cost of a DSLR. But with the convenience and simplicity of Auto, Easy and Scene mode.

I normally use a Canon D5II, but due to a broken leg and hand, I wanted something lighter to travel with on vacation. This camera is great; lots of manual functions and bullet proof auto modes to get the job done as well. It does eat batteries, but not too bad; just keep a 2nd set in the pocket. The only complaint is the lousy manual that is included; it is not possible to learn the camera with it and you can't tote the computer along to figure out how to run the camera with the full manual on the CD. I took the CD to my local printer and for about $10.00 they made a pocket size manual for me to carry along. Typical Canon manual, but they do make a great camera

As an amateur enthusiast I like the 12x zoom. And I can switch the exposure setting from completely automatic to aperture-preferred or shutter speed preferred semiautomatic to completely manual. Great for twilight or night shots. It's good that it uses standard batteries (2 AAs) but it does seem to go through them pretty quickly. Keep some extras in your bag.

This camera only uses (2) AA batteries which makes the camera lighter and smaller. It's very easy to set-up the interface and it's really user friendly. The 14 zoom is sufficient enough for indoor use and it also zooms in on outdoor use such as animals in the zoo. The resolution is as good as it gets, it's as good as any high end camera on the market without spending over $500. On (2) AA batteries you can shoot over 130 pictures without replacing the batteries, they hold the charge longer than other camera's I have tried and returned. Believe me, I've tried them all without much success except for this Canon camera. I highly recommend this little powerhouse camera.

There's a lot to like about this camera. One main feature is that it uses standard AA batteries. This makes it easy to carry spares, and is a lot less expensive than proprietary batteries. The controls are easy to use and the large, crisp screen has drawn "ohs" and "ahs" from people. The movie capture is better than I thought it would be. The camera takes nice photos in low light, but the stabilization could be stronger.

Great little companion; gets the job done

5 stars

This can be the one camera that does it all. Perfect for quick, simple snapshots. Or, put it on tripod and get serious with more adjustable options than I've yet been able to master. This is my third Canon SX. First one, SX110 IS, dropped into river while kayaking (oops!). Second one, SX120 IS,got sand in lens (Googling said the error message I got meant the camera was toast). This is the best of the 3; wider angle lens has been nice; HDMI is superb. Although many reviews ding this camera for short battery life, I've always been very satisfied using rechargable Li batteries. Master this single camera; take it with you wherever you go. Quit debating, Just go buy the SX130 IS now. Wish there were a way to use it as a web cam :)

great camera, good pictures

5 stars

The device has a great and easy interface to use. it take excellent macro/normal pictures. the quality is great . the video quality isn't the best, but it is really clear. the mic is pretty good. its not going to win any awards, but is the best camera I have had for pictures and video. you can program the ISO, flash, and type of picture object. Ide recommend this to more advanced photographers, because any new-time picture taker is going to take one look at it and get confused. but if you have some experience, you will be fine. i found it easy because i have been taking pictures for a long time. overall, it is great for those who cant afford a SLR, but like to take and good picture.

I love love LOVE this camera! You can remove the red eye right on the camera. I love that you can choose whether or not to use the flash, the camera also tells you when it thinks you should switch modes and use a flash! It has all the perks of a professional camera with the ease of a personal family camera! I am so happy!

Dead after 30 blurry pictures..

2 stars

I bought this camera to take pictures and video of costumes and crafts which I sell. I also had plans, if it was a nice camera, to use it for what few personal pictures I take. Confusing Settings: I read through the entire manual and the settings are a bit convoluted. For instance, you can only use the macro (close up pictures) with certain settings. I didn't like that since many of my pictures are close-range. Beautiful Colors: Absolutely perfect. My old camera was a Panasonic and I had to spend hours in photoshop fixing brightness and colors to match the real thing, but not with this camera. With or without the flash, the colors were perfect. Blurry Pictures: Even the slightest handshake when pushing the shutter button causes a blurry picture. I tried using the Pets

I love the ease of taking pictures, loading them to my computer in one step, and the cost was amazing! My cousin has a more advance cannon that she paid way more for but mine takes just as good if not better pictures!...Love it!

Wonderful camera for the money.

5 stars

I had been researching this camera for some time and then recently stumbled upon it at an unbelievable sale price at Best Buy, a mere $148!!! This was the lowest price I could find either online or in a store. If Best Buy strives to get my business, I'll give it to them! I purchased the camera to upgrade my trusty Canon a620 which took outstanding photos in most conditions. I mainly take pictures of family and kids and scenery and wildlife on our camping trips. I tend to use 'Auto' mode the most but will try new settings just to play around. So far I have been highly impressed with the Canon 130. I like the longer zoom range and the ability to take higher resolution video clips. I also like the ability to use AA batteries, rechargeable or otherwise. This is not a pocket camera, but at least you have something to hold and the buttons are easy to operate. Placed in an appropriately sized case it is not at all cumbersome on a belt loop. Whereas my previous Canon a620 tended to use the flash all the time on auto, the Canon 130 can take excellent pictures using the natural light of the situation, producing more realistic and natural looking photos with better depth. Outdoor photos consistently turn out great as long as the auto focus selects your main subject in the field of view. The zoom is phenomenal as I took a picture of a hawk in my backyard which was about 75' away and it looks like I was 5' away. Indoor photos are also possible without flash and the camera seems to do very well in selecting when and when not to use the flash indoors. When the flash does go off the camera appears to throttle back the flash if the subject is closer up. Speaking of close-ups the camera can detect when to switch into macro-mode on 'Auto' as well. I had to manually select macro on my previous Canon. Can you get blurred pictures with this camera as some reviewers have stated? Sure. If the camera tells you to lift the flash and you neglect to do so, you better have a very steady hand! Also, if you fully push the button down to take the picture before the camera has had time to focus on the main subject, the picture may turn out blurred as well. In my experience I have to purposely work to take a bad picture. I paired the camera with some 2300 NiMH rechargeable batteries and th

Bad, Bad, Bad,

1 stars

I have been photographing for 30+ years and this is the worst camera I have purchased. The batteries lasted less than 24 hours even switching to lower resolution photos. The flash sucks so much battery that by the time it is ready to flash, the subject has already exited the scene! It is pretty good for outdoor photos but that is about it! This camera needs completely re-worked including a lithium ion rechargeable battery instead of AA batteries. I would not advise purchasing this camera for any level of photographer!

Gotta love 12x optical zoom @ this price

5 stars

This camera is great! Pictures come out great, movie mode is awesome. Movie mode can get pretty grainy in low light conditions, but not too bad though. Yes, you do need to lift the flash to get the best picture possible when indoors or in the evening. This would be a great pairing with a tripod. The controls are pretty easy to figure out. I don't know why some people complain about battery life. I've put in Energizer lithium batteries and they last for a few weeks using the camera sparingly. Great camera for the price. GET IT!!

3 stars

I ended up returning this camera the day after I bought it and upgraded to a camera that had more zoom and more features. If all you wanted was a point and shoot and not great picture quality, this is a good camera. I did find the it was uncomfortable to hold with one hand, and I have small hands.

Great Camera and Greate Image Stabilization

5 stars

Great camera, but a battery hog. I found the best batteries to use are NiZn. Even though these batteries, when fully charged are 1.85 volts each ( 2 x 1.85 = 3.7 volts) and exceed the camera rating of 3.15 volts, they provide the capacity needed to shoot movie after movie. NiMh batteries are not adequate. For the NW National Drag races, I shot a gigabyte of stills and movies and the voltage drop was only down to 1.75 volts/battery.

Great all-around camera

4 stars

Pro - This camera is great for someone, who needs an easy camera that takes great pictures but likes a really zoom feature. This one fits the bill. The pictures are high quality and its easy to use yet if you want the control there are manual settings too. Con - you will need a higher speed SD card though... I was having "disk errors" and went in to Best Buy to ask and that was my problem. So spend a bit more to get a faster SD card (not an SD 4) and you'll be good to go. Because of the zoom, it's larger and heavier than many digital cameras.

Great clunky camera

5 stars

I know it is nice to have a small camera you can fit in your pocket... this camera may be described as clunky but it fits me just fine. It is easy to hold and takes GREAT photos. I am very happy with my purchase. The only thing I would change is to have the flash pop us automatically rather than having to flip it up.

A great upgrade!

5 stars

This is my third Canon camera and I absolutely love it! Every camera I've gotten has been an upgrade to the one I had before, and I love the features that come with this. The biggest reason I chose this camera over one of the others is the simple fact that this takes AA batteries. I'm the type of person who prefers to have the convenience of throwing in a new pair of batteries when required, rather than having to pre-charge a second battery pack and hope both don't die before I'm done with whatever I was taking pictures of. The quality of the pictures so far has been amazing, including the pictures I took of the July 4th fireworks we were setting off!

Outstanding Optical Zoom

5 stars

My purpose for buying this camera was for my parents but of course I had to test drive it first for about 1 week and roughly 250 pictures. I was not looking for compact, I was not looking for stylish, but I was looking for Optical Zoom and picture quality. It's amazing how close you can get to an object with 12X Optical Zoom. During my test drive, my nephew was performing in a play. The audience was dark and of course the actors on stage had spot lights on them. I took a picture and captured the entire crew of kids with room to spare on the left, right, top and bottom. Then I zoomed all the way to 12X and took a picture of only my nephew. You couldn't even tell that someone was standing on either side of him. And, I was NOT anywhere close to the front row. Some users will not like the fact that it runs on AA batteries. I on the other hand like the idea that I never have to charge it. Just imagine being on a trip. Gas Station = batteries. 7-11 liquor store = batteries. Grocery store = batteries. Etc. You get my drift.

Battery life is awful if you use video. Battery life okay with pictures. Wish it could use rechargeable batteries. Video has real issues with staying in focus. Pictures have vibrant color and pretty good. Have an issue with blurry pictures but could be user

One of the best point and shoots EVER!!

4 stars

First and foremost, get rechargeable batteries. They help alot. This camera is probably the best point and shoot camera out there. his camera seems as though it should be worth $400 instead of $250. The HD video is absolutely phenomenal. Only thing is it does .mov formats so you're going to have, let's say, 600mb for a 3 min video? The pop up flash is manual so you'll have to pop it up with your own finger(s). The zoom, FANTASTIC. It's keeps the HD quality even when zoomed in all the way unlike a lot of cameras. Oh and don't worry, if you want quick

The auto focus doesn't work well or quickly.

2 stars

I have had a great deal of trouble with the auto focus. Quite often when the shutter release is pushed half way down the focus is changed for the worse. I have tried changing the area of the focus and various settings. So far nothing has worked. Macro and under 20 feet away is where my main difficulty lays. I have gotten some good shots but it has taken many tries and time to get the camera to focus properly. Back to my Rebel when I am serious. Bought this one just to carry with me daily. It has not met my expectations. I'm not sure if it is something with this individual camera or me. Hope that I will find the right combination soon. It does do lovely landscapes and color is great.

Revision of Previous Review

4 stars

Now that I have a proper memory card (not included with camera) I have found this camera extremely easy to use. The viewing screen is much larger than my previous digital camera, and provides very clear images for previewing. I'm very satisfied with this camera, except for the memory card issue, which Canon has stated is not worth their correcting. I would encourage people who buy this camera to go to the Best Buy store, where you can get excellent help with this product. I ordered online, and I failed to notice any mention of the absent memory card in the specs for the camera.

It took great pictures. We used it mostly to document refinery equipment overhaul. Pictures were taken day and night. Even in dark condtions, it did great. I found the camera very easy to use. I sepecailly like the focus check feature. After a picture it taken, it zooms automatically on the section use to focus the camera. You get instant feed back as whether the shat was good or not. The screen is also great.

Great camera, great price

5 stars

Picture quality is very good. The camera design makes it easier to hold than the smaller models which makes for steadier shots. Thought i would get annoyed with the manual flash but the display will indicate if the light is too low. It's actually turned out to be a benefit since turning off the flash to get special shots is sometimes hard on other models. Lens gives a nice range for the optical zoom. You won't find a better value out there.

Easy camera to use

5 stars

Bought the camera as an impulse buy for a concert. Was not expecting more than decent pictures out of such a small camera, but I was happily surprised. The pictures were awesome. Clear even with the movement of the band on the stage. The zoom worked great, though once you get past the "optimal" zoom it does lose the stabilization and that created a few blurry pics mostly b/c of user error / shakes, but the pictures are still VERY clear. It was very easy to use, and I am looking forward to playing with some of the other features as well as using it for more concerts.

I bought this camera to have the features that a larger camera would have but compact enought that it wasn't heavy or bulky like the professional camera. It took great photos and had great and better zoom compared to a compact camera. I was able to take some wonderful pictures on my trip to San Francisco.
