If you’re a young photographer who wants to get into photojournalism this could be the career break you are waiting for.

The Times launched their annual Times Young Photographer of the Year competition.

The competition seeks to find the best photographer to award a six months full-time contract with the newspaper. This also means that the winner can get the best training in photojournalism.

Another bonus is the Canon camera package prize including a Canon EOS 5D Mark II body; Canon EF 24-70 f/2.8 L lens; EF 70-200 F/2.8 L IS lens; Canon 580EX II Speedlite flash.

There will be six finalists and one grand winner. The finalists will receive a year’s membership to the British Press Photographer Association as well as an exibith sponsored by Canon.

The Canon’s Pro Photo Solutions exhibition will be at Business Design Centre, Islington, London on October 26 and 27.

What the Times UK are looking for:

The winner will be someone who can show flair and imagination – whose work is visually exciting. Entrants will need to submit photographs in three different categories:

a. Lifestyle

b. Portraiture

c. Reportage

It’s up to you to interpret those different subjects and send us three images – one image for each category – that you think will make the judges sit up and pay attention. Don’t try to be too clever: if you need to explain your picture in a lengthy caption then the picture isn’t working. A powerful picture needs no explanation – it speaks for itself.

The competition is open to any UK and Republic of Ireland resident aged between 18 and 26. The closing date for applications is midnight on August 31 2010.
