familyA family portrait is as stressful as it is special. After gathering everyone from grandparents to grandchildren, you’ll have to make sure that the photo doesn’t come out cheesy or stiff.

While the photographer’s skills will have a lot to do with the outcome, following these tips should make things easier. For everyone.

Family Portrait Photography Tip #1: DO bring props and special items that will bring out your outfit, reveal a part of your personality, or would just look great in a photograph.

Family Portrait Photography Tip #2: DON’T create a theme. This usually ends up looking lame.

Family Portrait Photography Tip #3: DO encourage the kids to bring their favorite toys or sports gear.

Family Portrait Photography Tip #4: DON’T bring cuddly toys if you’re over 12 years old. It just isn’t right.

Family Portrait Photography Tip #5: DO bring the pets too— they’re family!

Family Portrait Photography Tip #6: DON’T bring too much things— one object per person only.

Family Portrait Photography Tip #7: DO have fabulous fun with matching jewelry, shades, and clothing. A bigger variety also helps to better accentuate each individual.

Family Portrait Photography Tip #8: DON’T bring the same prop for everyone. Your hobby is not everyone else’s.

Family Portrait Photography Tip #9: DO wear comfortable clothes. Comfortable equals natural. Natural equals happy.

Family Portrait Photography Tip #10: DON’T include celebrity images or popular mascots in your family portrait, or wear them on your clothes. You are representing your family, not a superstar.

There. That should put you on the proper track.
